Koorie English

Outline The Koorie English Literacy Program was developed in response to Koorie students coming to secondary school with very low literacy skills, which were inhibiting their academic success. Although the differences between Koorie English and standard Australian English may seem elusive to non-Koories, it is important that teachers, Koorie educators and Koorie students be taught that they are different but that both are valuable. The program highlights the differences between Koorie and Standard English and shows how each has its own linguistic patterns and how its use depends on where, when and with whom, communication takes place. It addresses:• What is Koorie Literacy?• Language, silence, gesture• How does speaking the Koorie language impact on the learning of Koorie students?

Presenter Marlene Atkinson, from the Moiduban tribe of the Bangerang people, is a qualified secondary teacher who has worked with schools and families to assist to develop strategies to promote school attendance and engagement.

Reciprocal Reading Plan 7 – 10

Outline Reciprocal teaching refers to an instructional approach that takes the form of a dialogue between teachers and students regarding text. It involves the teacher and students in reading, talking and critically thinking about text. The dialogue is structured by the use of the following strategies – predicting, clarifying, generating questions to explore literal, inferential and evaluative comprehension, and summarising. In this session, we will introduce the use of a student plan for effective reading for understanding within any secondary subject area.

Reciprocal Reading Plan 3 - 6

Outline Reciprocal teaching refers to an instructional approach that takes the form of a dialogue between teachers and students regarding text. It involves the teacher and students in reading, talking and critically thinking about text. The dialogue is structured by the use of the following strategies – predicting; clarifying; generating questions to explore literal, inferential and evaluative comprehension; and summarising. In this session we will work towards developing a plan for the classroom to include this approach.

Koorie EnglishOutline The Koorie English Literacy Program was developed in response to Koorie

students coming to secondary school with very low literacy skills, which were inhibiting their academic success.

Child Centred Curriculum  K-4 Outline Session 1 - Julie Bradby will teach a demonstration lesson at Horsham

North Primary School. Sessions 2 - the evening of that day, Julie will conduct a Twilight Session. Sessions 3 and 4 will occur in ensuing weeks. Discovery learning is all about language. When children are working together, discovering and being curious, the levels of language they use are complex and complicated. The key is to extend those rich experiences into their development and learning. In this program we will explore the ramifications of a child centred developmental program on  children's literacy and numeracy learning and examine in detail a teaching and learning model that combines IT and elements of  Reggio Emilia. Planning for rigorous learning  within a child centred learning framework can be a  challenge. In the follow-up sessions we will further explore the teaching and learning model  through sharing child centred episodes we experienced  in  our own classrooms.  Further insights into planning and assessment utilising  elements of Blooms Taxonomy, Reggio Emilia, rubrics and e5 will be introduced.

Presenter Julie Bradby – Early Primary Educational Consultant , Sessional Tutor ACU Ballarat. With many happy years teaching infants, Julie loves sharing ideas to enhance and enrich teaching and learning. She published many practical teaching resources with Rigby Heineman and has always been an advocate and a practitioner of play based curriculum.

The Use of Restorative Practices

Outline Restorative practices provides a no blame approach to dealing with harmful behaviours. This approach represents a philosophy and a process that acknowledges when a person does harm it affects those they hurt and the school community as well as themselves. The process (which uses a basic no blame script) can very easily be used in the classroom or school yard. When all parties feel they have been listened to, issues are far more likely to be resolved and young people more willing to take responsibility for their behaviour. There is also no ongoing resentment as there is in a win/lose situation. The workshop will provide participants with a framework to use the approach and simple whole school strategies to introduce the concept.

The Use of Restorative Practices

Outline Restorative practices provides a no blame approach to dealing with harmful behaviours. This approach represents a philosophy and a process that acknowledges when a person does harm it affects those they hurt, the school community as well as themselves. The process (which uses a basic no blame script) can very easily be used in the classroom or yard. When all parties feel they have been listened to issues are far more likely to be resolved and young people more willing to take responsibility for their behaviour. There is also no ongoing resentment as in win/loose situation. The workshop will provide participants with a framework to use the approach and simple whole school strategies to introduce the concept.
