 Two remarkable stories today.
Abraham’s hand is stilled by the angel,
and a ram is provided for sacrifice. Jesus
is transfigured and seen by Peter,
James and John in the glory that is
rightfully His. We could spend hours
meditating on either story, and it
would be time well spent.
But the second reading hints at
another thought very seldom discussed.
Paul is writing to the Romans in a
legalistic manner. If God is for us
who can be against us. This reading
from Romans can stand on its own,
but the question has to be asked,
why did the Fathers of the Church
choose to use this reading with the
Abraham/Isaac story and the
Transfiguration?
In a court of law, you want your
defender to stand at your side and
protect you. You trust him to have the
answers to the questions. Our defender
is Jesus. He is standing at our side.
In the Abraham/Isaac story the
question is put to Abraham by his son
Isaac, “But, Father where is the
lamb for sacrifice?” Abraham responds
“God will provide.” And He did, a
ram caught in the thicket.
In the Transfiguration, Jesus has
shared that He must go to Jerusalem,
be scourged and crucified. Peter
tells Jesus heaven forbid that anything
should happen to Him. Jesus responds
by showing Peter, James, and John
His future glory. That this is God’s
plan as shared through the prophets,
Elijah and Moses.
God has provided an insight as
to why Jesus must be sacrificed as
a lamb. We can learn from both
readings. God does provide what
we need when we need it. We
must trust that He knows what is
best for us. We trust that God will
provide for us.

Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

Prayer is communicating with God
and is central for both the individual
and the Church’s relationship with
God. While many Christians are
aware of the importance of praying
for one another, often they have no
real practice or experience of such
prayer. Prayer Ministry training is for
anyone who wants to learn how to
give and receive in this crucial ministry in
the life of the Church.” - Fr. Mathias
