Sunday, May 20, 2018 Pentecost

St. Paul reminds us today that all of our gifts have their source in the Holy Spirit and that those gifts are given “for the common good.” What gifts are mine to share?

Prayers for the Week Father, in Jesus’ name, stir into flame the gift of the Spirit.

Renew my Baptism and Confirmation.

Father, send the Holy Spirit to me that my faith in You will ever increase.

Father, may I see sin as You do.

Father, may this minute of my life be pleasing in Your sight.

Holy Spirit, help me to pray in my weakness.

Jesus, may I know how to suffer.

Dear Parishioners, You’ve seen me mention Cardinal Robert Sarah’s wonderful 2017 book The Power of Silence here before. I do again, and I suspect it won’t be the last time. In the book Cardinal Sarah, the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, speaks beautifully of the need for silence in prayer—exterior and interior silence; of hearing God in silence; of the sacred; of liturgy; and much, much more. Here are just a few snippets. “There is one great question: how can man really be in the image of God? He must enter into silence.” Silence must be our refuge from the world’s noise. He quotes a wonderful Carmelite write, Ven. Fr. Marie-Eugene de l’Enfant Jesus (d. 1967): “God speaks in silence, and silence alone seems able to express Him. For the spiritual person who has known the touch of God, silence and God seem to be identified. And so, to find God again, where would he go, if not to the most silent depths of his soul, into those regions that are so hidden that nothing can any longer disturb them?” “No prophet ever encountered God without withdrawing into solitude and silence.” “Silence is not an absence. On the contrary, it is the manifestation of a presence, the most intense of all presences.” “Catholics who associate themselves with that kind of noise, who enter into the Babel of tongues, become to some extent exiles from the city of God. (Mass becomes racket and confusion. Tension, bable.)” “Our contemporaries have the feeling that prayer consists of saying things to God, shouting and fidgeting in his presence, but prayer is simpler than that. It consists of listening to God speak silently within us.” “Silence is more important than any other human work.” “Silence leads to God, provided man stops looking at himself.” These are, as I say, just snippets, culled just from the first chapter of more than 65 pages, but I hope they whet your appetite and encourage you to read this fine book. No wonder it is Bishop Stika’s current favorite book—and mine. I will be getting a copy for the parish library. One more quote, this one from Pope Francis: “A ‘couch potato’ evangelization doesn’t exist; get up and go!” Amen!

Father Patrick

Congratulations to Jim and Lill Katzbeck on

their 60th wedding anniversary on May 17th!

Happy Birthday to us! The Feast of Pentecost

is often called the birthday of the Church. That is a good description, but for most of us, when we think of the Church, we unconsciously think of the Church as we know it now. But on the first Pentecost, there was no church as we know it now. There was no papacy as we understand it today. There was a leader of fishermen named Peter. He made mistakes, often messed up. There were no papal encyclicals. The first one was written in 1730. There were no Cardinals, that rank was created in the 11th century. It was not until medieval times that we saw the title “Monsignor”. There were no church buildings, no basilicas or cathedrals until the 4th century. There was no canon law until the 12th century. There were no monks or nuns at the beginning of the Church, but still there was a Church. Much of the organizational growth of the Church over the centuries was necessary. But it had the unfortunate effect of making people identify the Church with its real estate, bureaucracy, titles and laws instead of themselves. Remember—the Holy Spirit fell on people that first Pentecost and the Church was born. The Spirit did not fall on the structure or the externals for, as we have seen, there were none. The Spirit fell on unwashed fishermen, peasant carpenters, ordinary housewives, tax collectors and seedy, marginal folk. The Spirit glued them together by three things—baptism into Jesus, the breaking of the bread and witness by ordinary people. These were the basics of the beginning “Church”. The presumption was that each one upon whom the Spirit fell had gifts to use to spread the gospel. This was the early Church—fishermen, tax collectors and simple people with a variety of gifts. The miracle of Pentecost was not that people could understand what disciples said. The miracle was that ordinary people, who recently had been in hiding and full of fear suddenly were Church and making bold proclamations without fear. A convert once told me that he became a Catholic when a Christian friend took care of his family when he was out of work. Often, that is why people join our Church. Not because of lofty doctrine or great buildings, but because they see the Church in action in the lives of people who are the Church. If we were set down in the desert, we still would be the Church. If we had to gather in a prison cell to celebrate Mass or if we had to hide in a barn to baptize our children, we would still be Church. Baptism, Eucharist and witness make us Church. They are our defining identities, as they were on that first Pentecost when the Church was born. (by Fr. Bob Warren, SA Franciscan Friars of the Atonement)

“Change for Life” to support Life Outreach (Mother’s Day to Father’s Day)

If you want to help this cause, take a bottle home and place it in a visible spot as a reminder to pray for the safety and salvation of mothers and their unborn babies. June 1, 2018 Featured Movie is Paradise

Lagoon (1957). Lord Loam has modern ideas about his household; he believes in treating his servants as his equals - at least sometimes. His butler, Crichton, still believes that members of the serving class should know their place and be happy there. But when the Loam family are shipwrecked on a desert island with the self-reliant Crichton and maid Tweeny, the class system is put to the test. Join your fellow parishioners in the Parish Life Center at 7pm. Feel free to bring food and your favorite refreshments.

"Pope Francis - A Man of His Word" opened

May 18th in Knoxville and is intended to be a personal journey with Pope Francis, rather than a biographical documentary about him. The pope's ideas and his message are central to this documentary, which sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today's global questions. The closest theater to see this movie is at Regal Downtown West. Google the theater for more information.

The New Parish Directory is Available. If

your picture is in our parish directory your free book will be able to be picked up after Mass. If you did not submit a picture to the directory you can purchase a book for $10.

The “Flags on the Hill” displayed between

Armed Forces Day and Flag Day are in honor of or in memory of a loved one. The flag can also represent a branch of the service. Thank you to those of our parish family for sharing in this tribute.

We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace.

(Pope Francis)
