Gospel Meditation December 30, 2018 The Holy Family
"After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the
midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them
questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his
understanding and his answers." As we celebrate the feast of
the Holy Family, this Gospel exposes us to a strange tension.
While this family is one we can look to for an example, they are
not quite the same family unit as everyone else. There is an
otherness to Jesus, something profound. And yet, perhaps on
second thought, are our families so different?
When Mary and Joseph encountered Jesus in the temple, "they
were astonished." But at what? Mary's response is surprise.
They're not astonished that Jesus is preaching in a place for
respected teachers. They're not astonished that their son has
captured the attention of the wisest men of the time period.
They're astonished at his seemingly disobedient behavior! "Son,
why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been
looking for you with great anxiety." All our children have an
"otherness" about them, something that makes them unique
and different. They are distinctly not "me." What will our own
children become? What temple will they wander off to? Who
will they astound?

Second Collection - Thank you!
Religious give thanks. “This money is pure gift,” writes a religious sister of the support made possible by the Retirement Fund for the Religious. “It enables us to continue providing care for our elderly sisters.” Holy Trinity’s gift of $5,492.34 to this collection helps hundreds of religious communities meet pressing retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Thank you for your generosity!
Christmas Collection
Our budget this year for the Christmas collection is $42,000. It represents a significant component of the operating budget each year. It is needed to keep our parish facilities running smoothly over the winter. Please give generously. If you didn’t make your contribution towards Christmas yet, please consider it this weekend or during the week so it can be credited to 2018.
Also, please remember that you can make recurring and one-time contributions online by visiting the parish website at www.holytrinitywestmont.org and click on Support Us. We will provide an update on the Christmas collection in next week’s bulletin.
CCW - Monthly Meeting Reminder
Join the Council of Catholic Women’s next meeting on Monday, January 7, at 7pm, at People's Resource Center, in Westmont. The program will be on Self-Care for Women. To be added to our email updates, please contact Jeanne Pantke at 630-853-2245 or [email protected].
Sunday Offertory Appeal - GOD SO LOVED HE GAVE
Your response has been great. Almost 200 families have responded with their pledge cards. As noted in the chart in the “Business Corner” section, for the first time this fiscal year, we have met (and slightly exceeded) our YTD budget.
Many of the families have started their increased offerings and it is moving the parish actual total ahead of budget. Your generosity is once again a great reflection of your commitment to the parish community at Holy Trinity.
You may still submit your offering card. They are located in the Narthex or available in the parish office. This will minimize the cost of any future mailings.
Thank you again and peace and blessings in the New Year to you and your family!

Over the course of the year in Science, the seventh and eighth graders have been hard at work on their science fair projects. The Holy Trinity Science Fair this year will be held on Friday, January 25, 2019. Every year, we are able to have a successful science fair because of the people who volunteer to help out as judges during the morning of the event. No prior experience is necessary in order to be a judge. If you would be interested in judging this year’s school science fair, please contact Mr. Tom Garro at [email protected]. Thank you for your interest and your assistance in helping the students in their journey through the scientific process.
