FROM THE DESK OF THE ADMINISTRATOR

In trying to get all the revised Mass and Confession schedule information in the bulletin last week, I forgot to wish a Happy Father’s Day to our fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and men of influence in our lives. Thank you for the example that you are to us! Speaking of the revised Mass schedule, it is available on our website if you missed it last week. Today is the last day to state your satisfaction with the schedule at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/W79KX77. Thanks for taking the time to let your voice be heard. The next step is to send it off to Bishop Waltersheid for his stamp of approval. As we celebrate today the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), I again remind you of the great blessing we have in the SBP Ado-ration Chapel. As I have mentioned previously, we are in need of more adorers. To lead the way, I will be adding myself to the schedule. I certainly could use more time in prayer. I have asked the rest of the clergy team to be as involved as they possibly can. SBP youth minister Jonah Soucy is excited about his expanded role of overseeing adoration. He has great plans of staggering the schedule to maximize the number of non-related persons signed up for each hour. If you are interested or have questions, contact him via phone at 412-486-2606 or email at [email protected]. The Ordination of Several Priests will take place this Saturday, 29 June, beginning at 10:00 AM at St. Paul Ca-thedral, Oakland. Four men are being ordained. Each of them have done their Major Seminary (Graduate Stud-ies) at the Theological College, part of the Catholic Uni-versity of America in Washington, D.C. They include: Deacon Brendan H. Dawson, from Saint Victor Parish, Bairdford; Deacon Timothy X. Deely, from Saint Paul Ca-thedral, Oakland; Deacon David J. Egan, our neighbor, from Saint Mary of the Assumption, Glenshaw; and Dea-con Mingwei Li, from Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, Pleas-ant Hills. Let us wish these men many, many blessings as they advance to Priesthood and begin their ministry. This week brings the last round of ordination anni-versaries. My official date is Tuesday, the 25th. We also offer congratulations this week to Deacon Steve Byers as he celebrates his 20th anniversary of ordination on 26 June. May God grant him many more years of service!

See you in Church! Fr. Jim Gretz

COST: $30.00 per child or $60.00 for family

Make a splash at shipwrecked Vacation Bible School this summer for our parish grouping! Venture to an un-charted island where children discover the truth that Jesus carries them through life’s storms. Registration forms can be submitted to the St. Bonaventure Parish Office or dropped off at Holy Spirit Parish Office.

REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE CHURCH ENTRANCES.

We are still in need of volunteers for VBS this summer to help with music, decorations, snacks, scripture, crafts,

games and more! The program for our combined parish grouping will be held the week of August 5th - 9th from

9:00-12:00 at St. Bonaventure Parish. If you are interested in volunteering as a leader or helper, please contact

Mary Ann Petrovich at 412-980-8358 (call or text) or [email protected].

MARK YOUR CALENDAR – AUG. 18TH – HSP PICNIC The annual Holy Spirit Parish Picnic will take place on Sunday, August 18th at Millvale Riverview Park from 1-6 pm with food served from 1-4pm. More details will be forthcoming. Like last year, all parishioners in our group-ing will be cordially invited.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO SELL RAFFLE TICKETS We are in need of volunteers to sell tickets for the Holy Spirit Cash Raffle on the island across from Hardee’s. If you have a few hours, call the parish office at 412-821-4424 and they will inform you of the dates and times needed for sellers.

2019 GOLDEN APPLE AWARD Lori Reithmiller Rossi, daughter of Holy Spirit parishioners William and Anna Reithmiller, was a recent recipient of the Golden Apple Award. These annual awards, given to educa-tors at Catholic schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, symbolize excellent performance

in the classroom, church and community. Lori is a mathe-matics teacher at Bishop Canevin High School and had previously taught at Mt. Alvernia High School in Millvale where she also served as department chair and assistant principal of student affairs. Congratulations, Lori!

HOLY SPIRIT CASH RAFFLE All of our fundraisers at Holy Spirit have been important for the much needed revenue to op-erate the parish and maintain a balanced budget. The Cash Raffle is our largest means of profit from a fundraiser. That is why we appeal to all of parishioners pick up your packet of tickets which can be found at the main entrance of Holy Spirit Church. They are in alphabetical order so they should be easy to find. You probably read in last week’s bulletin or heard on the street that the Adelphoi School which has leased our parish school building for over six years has decided to move on to another location. That loss of monthly rental fees will be a substantial blow to our operating budget. As we move forward toward the full merger of our grouping, we will need to look beyond traditional fund-raisers to increase parish revenue. But for now, this Cash Raffle is our best source of revenue to help us along. Do your best to sell or buy the two books that you received. If you need more, we always have them at the office. Thanks to all who assist us in this endeavor!

MASS ON THE FOURTH OF JULY Just one Mass will be celebrated in our grouping on Thursday, July 4th. It will be at All Saints, Etna, at 9am.

PARISH SHARE PROGRAM Each week in the bulletin you are able to see the goal for Parish Share as well as the amount that you have generously donated to date. During the summer months, there always seemed to be a lull in responses to PSP. There are just so many other things going on and a pledge or pay-ment to Parish Share does not seem to be a high priority. But we need to appeal to your generosity. If you have not yet made a pledge or payment, kindly do so today. Or if you have chosen to make monthly payments on a pledge, please continue to do so throughout the summer. We shouldn’t feel forced to par-ticipate in Parish Share but we should want to be a part of the program that serves the many needs of our Dioce-san Church, including our own. And as you are aware, by the end of the year, any shortfall in the projected goal must be made up from our par-ish funds. Please do what you can. And we are very grateful to those parishioners who have made their pledges to date.

PRIESTHOOD ORDINATION Celebrate with the entire Church of Pittsburgh as four men are ordained priests next Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Paul Cathedral, Pittsburgh. Please pray for Brendan Dawson, Timothy Deely, David Egan and Mingwei Li as they prepare for this joyous day on which they will become priests in service of our Church. More information is available at www.diopitt.org/events.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We owe today’s beautiful feast to a valiant woman who suffered a great deal to establish a feast out of her love for the Eucharist. Juliana was a nun in Belgium in the thirteenth century. She served in a hospital for lepers. She be-came convinced through her prayer that the liturgical year was incomplete because it had no feast for the Eucha-

rist. Her efforts were not welcome, and a supervising priest sought to punish her for promoting a feast that nobody wanted. He even had her accused of financial mismanagement and banished her from her convent. Shortly after she was exiled, the bishop approved the feast. It quickly spread through Europe. In those days, people very seldom received Holy Communion, and so the processions through the streets with the Eucharistic bread not only led to an awareness of Christ’s hunger to be with us, but prepared the way for a deeper desire to receive Christ’s Body and Blood in more frequent Com-munion. The feast grew rapidly, but Juliana disappeared into poverty and a hidden life. She ended her days as an anchoress, a woman living in seclusion in a room at-tached to a parish church. Imagine her delight at seeing us gathered at the table of the Lord on this day, aware of Christ’s presence in our midst, sharing fully in Christ’s Body and Blood. Our celebration today invests her strug-gle and sorrows with dignity and meaning. -James Field, © J. S. Paluch Co.

PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND

Pope Francis calls each of us to wit-ness to charity and to show God's mercy to one an-other. He encour-ages us to "open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help!" (Misericordiae Vultus [MV], no. 15). The Peter's Pence Collection unites us in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of charity to those in need. Your generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters. The purpose of the Peter's Pence Collection is to provide the Holy Father with the financial means to respond to those who are suffering as a result of war, oppression, natural disaster, and disease. Please be generous.

BIRD CONTROL If you have been in Holy Spirit Church the last few weekends, you could not help but notice that we suddenly have a few pigeons attending Mass! We seem to have the problem under control but there is no hard solution to this problem. We have a large church with a huge ceiling and archway in the sanctuary. We are certain that they are not coming in through the tow-ers as we recently spent some money to clean and screen at least one tower. Having been given professional opinions and our own visual experiences, we are convinced they are enter-ing the church either through the windows or the doors. All windows are to remain shut. Please do not attempt to open them. Most importantly, the church doors will be unlocked but are not to be propped open or left open. The only ex-ception will be when the congregation is exit-ing through the various doorways. We hope that this will work but with a church building of our size, there are just too many possibili-ties for entry that the naked eye cannot see.
