Community Outreach

HOLY CROSS IS A SERVANT of both God and the human family, providing emergency assistance to those in need as well as tools for self-help. With in-kind gifts, hands-on assistance, and financial support we seek to make a difference in the lives of people and families in need locally, nationally, and globally. Locally, we support Interfaith Hospitality Network, The Ark, Athens Nurses Clinic, Homeless Education Program, Food Bank of NE Georgia, Food2Kids, Athens Community Council on Aging, Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia, Lutheran Social Services of Georgia. Additionally, several times a year all of our Small Groups select a special local need to meet. Nationally, we support Bike & Build, Lutheran Social Services in America, Lutheran Disaster Response, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life as well as the 26 colleges and 8 seminaries of the ELCA. Globally, we support the ELCA’s Global Mission, the Lutheran World Hunger Appeal, Lutheran Disaster Relief, Women to The World, and Lutheran World Relief.

ALL ARE WELCOME AT THE LORD’S TABLE. Jesus, who is our host, invites us to experience his Real Presence “in, with, and under the elements of the holy meal.” When prompted by an usher please approach the pastor who will give you a piece of bread or a wafer. (Gluten-free wafers are available. Please ask the Pastor for one.) Hold the bread/wafer in your hand and touch it briefly to either the white grape juice or the red wine in the divided chalice held by the assistants. Consume the bread/wafer and return to your seat, via the side aisle, for personal prayer. This practice is called “intinction.”

Please join us after worship for breakfast and conversation in our fellowship hall.

+ GATHERING + ORGAN PRELUDE Variants on "Es Flog Ein Kleins Waldvögelein" Raymond Haan WELCOME, ANNOUNCEMENTS, & WORSHIP NOTES Please stand if you are able THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM Blessed be the Holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen. Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. PROCESSIONAL HYMN “O Day of Rest and Gladness” ELW #521 GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

+ WORD + Please be seated CHILDREN’S TIME - All children and the young at heart are invited to come forward.

FIRST READING 1 Kings 8:22-23, 41-43

A reading from First Kings. 22Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. 23He said, “O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart. 41“Likewise when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a distant land because of your name 42—for they shall hear of your great name, your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm—when a foreigner comes and prays toward this house, 43then hear in heaven your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and so that they may know that your name has been invoked on this house that I have built.”

Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

PSALMODY Psalm 96 Antiphon will be sung once by the cantor, then repeated by the congregation. Then the cantor will sing the verses, with the congregation singing antiphon.

Verses (Cantor only)

1. Sing to the Lord, sing a new song; Sing to the Lord all you lands. Sing to the Lord; bless his name. Antiphon: Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations.

2. Announce his salvation day after day. Tell his glory among all the lands; among all people his wondrous deeds. Antiphon: Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations.

3. Give to the Lord, you fam’lies of nations, Give the Lord glory and praise; Give to the Lord the glory due his name! Antiphon: Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations.

4. Worship the Lord in Holy attire. Tremble before him, all the earth. Say among the nations: The Lord is king. He governs his people with equity. Antiphon: Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations.

SECOND READING Galatians 1:1-12

A reading from Galatians.

1Paul an apostle—sent neither by human commission nor from human authorities, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead—2and all the members of God’s family who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: 3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins to set us free from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 6I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—7not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are confusing you and

want to pervert the gospel of Christ.

8But even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed! 9As we have said before, so now I repeat, if anyone proclaims to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let that one be accursed! 10Am I now seeking human approval, or God’s approval? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still pleasing people, I would not be a servant of Christ. 11For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; 12for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

Please stand if you are able GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia—congregation Verse—cantor

Alleluia—congregation

GOSPEL VERSE: Alleluia. God so loved the world that he gave his | only Son,* so that everyone who believes in him should not perish, but have e- | ternal life. Alleluia. (John 3:16)

GOSPEL Luke 7:1-10

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.

1After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. 3When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. 4When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy of having you do this for him, 5for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.” 6And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; 7therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. 8For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” 9When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” 10When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated HOMILY Jackson Hodges 6

Please stand if you are able HYMN OF THE DAY “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word” ELW #517

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
