What does the Church teach about the dignity of human life from conception to natural death? What does “building a culture of life” mean? What is appropriate to teach children at their age levels?

Sometimes we parents need some reinforcement, so that we can better educate our children about pro-life, marriage and family issues. We will include a brief question & answer period. Coffee will be served

The Prophet Visits in October

Study of the Old Testament illuminates how God has revealed himself to his people throughout the ages, using images as signs and instruments of his salvation, and many of his signs preconfigure the sacraments, including the Eucharist. Israelites were baptized into Moses as we are baptized into Christ.

Manoa Punahou Catholic Community offers a look back to the time of the prophet Moses through a dynamic bible study during the month of October. “Moses: Signs, Sacraments, and Salvation” is a beautiful, picturesque video in Ignatius Press‟ Footprints of God series in the graphic, enthusiastic, inimitable travelogue style by Stephen K. Ray. (Watching it will make you want to book a trip to the Holy Land but, unfortunately, one is not included in this study!) Participants will be provided a study guide with introductions and questions for dis-cussion moderated by members of the faith formation committee of both parishes.

Sessions will be 7:00 every Tuesday evening in October (5, 12, 19, and 26) in the Sacred Heart Bachelot Hall conference room and 9:00 every Wednesday morning in October (6, 13, 20, and 27) in the St. Pius X hall conference room. Participants should bring their bibles.

As Moses served to bring the Ten Commandments and prophesied about Jesus, his faith and actions remain with us today. Learn how with your fellow parishioners in this engaging new bible study.

Divine Mercy Healing Conference 2010

The Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine

Mercy is organizing a 4-day conference to

be held at St. Philomena Church, Salt Lake-Honolulu on Oct. 7-10, 2010. The con-

ference theme “the Healing Power of God’s Mercy” will help the participants to hope in

the love and mercy of Our Lord Jesus de-

spite sufferings and trials in their daily lives. The conference will feature dynamic

speakers from the mainland who will talk about Divine Mercy and Healing. The clos-

ing Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Larry Silva. A special multi-media program for

the youth and young adults will be pre-

sented on October 9 from 11am to noon. There will also be healing services

This Weekend’s Gospel Reflections: Luke 16:19-31

This Sunday’s gospel is a parable about the needy at our door with an admonition to listen. We are so inundated with requests for dona-tions that we can turn a deaf ear to them; it is so easy to live oblivious to the needs of others. Jesus makes clear at the end of this parable, however, that we are given everything we need to set our values and relationships right. We have the words of “Moses and the prophets.” Even more, unlike the rich man in the parable, we do have Someone among us who has “rise[n] from the dead.” We need only to listen. This is how we gain the insight to see those in need at our own door and choose how to re-spond. There is a great “chasm” between selfishness and self-surrender, between evil and good, be-tween the lost and saved. This chasm is a metaphor for listening to God’s word and al-lowing ourselves to be guided by its demands. The time to respond decisively to God and oth-ers is now; after death it is too late. ~Living Liturgy 2010
