Pastor’s Note I am away this Sunday and next. I am serving at the Catholic House at the Chautauqua Institution as chaplain and lecturer. If you’ve never been to Chautaugua put it on your list, bucket or otherwise. It is a marvelous potpourri week of art, science, culture, religion and good challenging and enriching talk, all in western New York. Cahutauqua is summer camp for smart adults. Check it out some summer. Learning can be both fun and holy.

DRIVE FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES

The Social Concerns Committee, as part of our outreach program to the Highbridge community, is conducting a drive for NEW school supplies. These supplies will be distributed to 200 impoverished children before the opening of the coming school year. New items requested include: black and white composition books, pencils, pens, erasers, rulers, crayons, folders, loose leaf paper, loose leaf binders and backpacks. Donations may be left in the appropriate box in the Tompkins Ave. entrance of the church. Your donations are deeply appreciated and will be put to good use.

Jesus was a Healer

Jesus was a healer never turned a patient down

never charged coin or conversion started off with dust and spittle

then re-tuned lives to pattern simply by his attention

often surprised himself a little by his unbounded ability.

Jesus was a healer reattached his captor’s ear

open senses, unjammed cripples sent pigs to drown delirium

cured a shy tug at his hem learned to transmit resurrection

could have stood more Thank You for God’s sake, which was his own.

Jesus was a healer Keep this quiet, he would mutter

to his learners. Copy me and they did to a degree

still depicted on church walls cure without treatment or rehearsals.

This weekend our communion hymn is This Bread That We Share. It was written by Dominic MacAller, the director of liturgy and music at Padre Serra Parish in Camarillo, California. Dominic is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University (LMU) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Choral Conducting and piano. He developed a great passion for musicianship and musicality under his teacher, mentor and friend, Paul Salamunovich, and decided music was his vocation. Since 1994, Dominic has been singing tenor in the Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC) and was part of a small select chorus from the LAMC that sang for the gala dedication of Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and which, previously, had given the U.S. premiere of John Adams' opera El Nino, both in Los Angeles and in New York, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. While at LMU, Dominic became acquainted with Bob Hurd, a prolific composer of liturgical music, and has worked closely with Bob as part of the small vocal ensemble Anawim. Coincidentally, Bob Hurd is the composer of our Entrance and Offertory hymns this weekend. An accomplished composer, arranger and pianist, Dominic has served occasionally as accompanist for Legacy, another Los Angeles-based chorus. His singing, arranging, playing, conducting and contracting have been featured on a number of recordings for Oregon Catholic Press (OCP), the publisher of our hymnal. Dominic earned his Master's degree in Choral Conducting from California State University in Fullerton and was an auditor/participant in the conductor's master class with Helmuth Rilling at the 1993 Oregon Bach Festival in Eugene. He lives in Ventura County with his wife, and daughter who is a vocal performance major, along with two dogs, and one cat.

Do you remember a special person who helped you to see God more clearly? Follow Jesus more nearly? Love more dearly?

Maybe you want to be that person to some of our Children in the Religious Education Program.

to the afternoon and evening classes.

Assistants needed for all evening sessions.

Catechists are offered guidelines, curriculum, and support from the Director and other Catechists. It is an awesome experience to witness a Child falling in love with God. You may be interested in sharing a class with another Catechist – that is always a possibility. The Requirement to be a Catechist is; you have received your Sacraments of Initiation, are a practicing Catholic, and a desire to share. The success at Holy Innocents is due to the many dedicated Volunteers who offer their

time, talents, and treasures. Assistants can be any age and only need “a willingness to help

and support the Children and the Program.”

If you would like to volunteer please call the Religious Education Department at 769-3297

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 21, 2016

First Reading: Isaiah 66:18-21

Isaiah portrays a time when people from many nations will gather in Jerusalem and proclaim God's glory. God's messengers will teach many nations about God. Just as the Israelites bring offerings, these messengers will bring people from all nations to worship. Second Reading: Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13

The Hebrews are told that God disciplines those he loves. When a parent disciplines a child, the child usually learns what is expected of him. The Hebrews are encouraged to face life's trials as a form of discipline, and attempt to learn something from them. Gospel: Luke 13:22-30

Jesus warns that the door to God's kingdom will be locked for those who ignored his wishes. Many people will come from all nations and take their place in God's kingdom. Others will not be recognized by God, and he will reject them.
