THE RUTH CHAPTER, ST. CHRISTOPHER'S CHURCH
THE ORDER OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE KING
The Ruth Chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King was chartered on May 7, l990
with Margaret Young as president and members Patricia Canne, T. A. Johnson, Clemen Nelle, and
Mary Frances Thompson. Fr. Tom Haifley was priest. Current members were added as follows: Anna
Russell (1994), Susi Fuller (1996), Mary Jo Martin (1998), Reba Bealmer (2000), Helen Marnix
(2002), Helen Schatz (2002), Grace Dennis (2004), Lauri Kelso (2005), Lisa Schatz (2005) Alyne
Strube (2005), Carolyn Haddock (2007), Winnie Hardcastle (2007), Mary Snyder (2007), Marilea Hof-
man (2008), Erica Martin (2010) and Pat Schrock (2010). In training: Jeanene Barnes
The Daughters of the King is a religious order for women and girls who are communicants of
the Episcopal Church, churches in communion with it, or churches in the Historic Episcopate. The
order was founded in 1885 by Margaret J. Franklin at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in New York
City. National Headquarters are now located in Woodstock, Georgia.
Members undertake a Rule of Life, incorporating the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service. At a
Service of Admission the Clergy asks the candidate(s) the following: "Do you promise faithfully to
obey the two Rules of the Order, The Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service? To offer at all times
your loyal aid to the clergy and to the parish to advance the cause of Christ? To wear habitually the
cross of the Order? And to work for its purposes, as God may give you the opportunity?" Additional-
ly, we are obligated to attend a Corporate Communion once a year.
We live out our vows in daily places: we have promised to do all we can through words and
deeds to bring others, especially women and girls, into a relationship with Jesus Christ and into the
fellowship of the Church. We have promised to provide service to recent widows, single mothers, new
mothers, homebound women, women in hospitals, women living alone and women serving in the mili-
tary. We are also especially concerned with children and family life. In 1999 we inaugurated Cele-
bration of New Life on Christ the King Sunday: there were 8 children under one year of age at the first
service; we continued this event until 2006. Some of the children honored still attend St. Christopher's:
Bryna Madden(1999), Dennis Kelso (2000), Everette Madden (2001), Garrett Madden (2003), Victoria
Sparks (2004), and Calvin Madden (2005). We participate with others in the Christmas program
sponsored by Camp New Hope. Children from a family whose parents are incarcerated are chosen and
gifts are provided to be given to children at a party held at the Cathedral. We also participate in some
of the activities at the Diocesan and National level. Lauri Kelso has attended two National Conven-
tions as a delegate. At one of the Conventions she carried the Ruth Chapter Banner designed by Reba
Bealmer. "Lift High the Cross" is the hymn of the Order. We are hosting a Spring Assembly on May
7th here at St. Christopher's.
PRAYER REQUESTS: Any one is invited to give a request to any member in person, or on the phone,
or email. Also, your request may be placed in the Prayer Request Box which is located in the Narthex
of the Sanctuary. The Ruth Chapter has an active calling list which is used in case when needed. The
request will be relayed to members promptly. It is our privilege to honor your requests.
VISION STATEMENT
Empowered by the Holy Spirit, our vision as Daughters of the King is to know Jesus Christ, to
make Him known to others, and become reflections of God's love throughout the world. NH Page 1
