Middle School Faith Formation

Holy Family Parishioners:

Over the past ten months, many of our communities have

been faced with solitude. Our gospel from Mark this week

shares the same sense of solitude that Jesus was

requesting. He wanted to be somewhere deserted, to be

alone with his feelings, to recharge his spirit. While this time

in present day has been difficult for many, perhaps we can

look at this time as not only a time to be alone, but also a

time to recharge. As we begin to see a light and prayerfully

an end to this pandemic, the evidence is real that we need

to re-engage our parishioners and our community. The

need of a strengthened relationship with Jesus has never

been more apparent.

As a way to encourage a fostering of this

relationship, I am excited to be the first Director of

Engagement Ministries for Holy Family Parish. Over the

past couple of weeks since taking on this position, I have

received the question often, “So, what does that mean?”

One of my goals in this new ministry is to help re-engage

our parishioners as well as help welcome members of our

community into our parish through our growing number of

families preparing for baptism and couples preparing to

marry in the church. While there are several other items on

my list in engaging those coming into the church, it is also a

main priority of mine to help families bring Jesus into lives

and into their homes through the practice of prayer and

liturgical living. In order to do this, we need to catechize not

just children, but adults as well.

In an effort to get the ball rolling, one of the first

engagement activities organized was the local March for

Life on January 29 at Boyce Park. Together with about forty

others, we marched in fellowship, praying for the sanctity of

all life. While it was bitter cold, that did not stop marchers of

all ages even beginning in infancy. There were families,

single adults, clergy, and even participants of other faiths;

however, together we came in being a voice for the

voiceless. This first event was only the beginning of a new

wave of opportunities to meet families and invite them into a

better relationship with Jesus.

If there is anything you are looking for or if you have

ideas for what you would like to see, please reach out to me

at [email protected] or by calling 412-793-4511,

ext. 503. I am thrilled to be on this journey with all of you

and can’t wait to see the Holy Spirit thrive within us.

Your sister in Christ,

Steph Williams

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

READING I JB 7:1-4, 6-7

Job spoke, saying: Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery? Are not

his days those of hirelings? He is a slave who longs for the

shade, a hireling who waits for his wages. So I have been

assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been

allotted to me. If in bed I say, “When shall I arise?” then the night

drags on; I am filled with restlessness until the dawn. My days are

swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without

hope. Remember that my life is like the wind; I shall not see

happiness again.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 147:1-2,3-4,5-6

R. Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.

Praise the Lord, for He is good; sing praise to our God, for He is

gracious; it is fitting to praise Him. The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem;

the dispersed of Israel He gathers.

R. Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He tells

the number of the stars; He calls each by name.

R. Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power; to His wisdom there is no

limit. The Lord sustains the lowly; the wicked He casts to the

ground.

R. Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.

READING 2 1 COR 9:16-19, 22-23

Brothers and sisters: If I preach the gospel, this is no reason

for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me,

and woe to me if I do not preach it! If I do so willingly, I have a

recompense, but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted

with a stewardship. What then is my recompense? That, when

I preach, I offer the gospel free of charge so as not to make

full use of my right in the gospel.

Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave

to all so as to win over as many as possible. To the weak I

became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things

to all, to save at least some. All this I do for the sake of the

gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. MT 8:17

Christ took away our infirmities and bore our diseases.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL MK 1:29-39

On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon

and Andrew with James and John. Simon’s mother-in-law lay

sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He

approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the

fever left her and she waited on them. When it was evening,

after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed

by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He

cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he

drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak

because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he

left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.

Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on

finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them,

“Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there

also. For this purpose have I come.” So he went into their

synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout

the whole of Galilee.

EL PAPA FRANCISCO CONVOCA EL AÑO DE SAN JOSE

(primera parte)

año dedicado especialmente a él.

Padre amado, tierno y obediente

peranza", sabe “hacer sitio incluso a esa parte contradictoria,

WE’VE REACHED OUR GOAL!…And we STILL have until the end of February to collect for

the 2020 Parish Share Program. Remember, EVERY dollar that is collected above our Parish

Share assessment stays HERE in our Parish without impacting next year’s assessment.

This extra $$ collected can be used for special projects like upgrading the sound systems at

our churches or installing better video equipment for livestream Masses

and events such as weddings, funerals, baptisms and other special

occasions. This is especially beneficial during this pandemic, but will be

important in the future as well. Please continue contributing to Parish

Share this year. If at all possible, please consider increasing your

donation to Parish Share in 2021 to help Holy Family Parish and our special projects that will

improve our parish life!

Thank you and may God bless your families for your

generous support this year.

Holy Family Parish is starting a Prayer Request Team

Parishioners are invited to (1) call for or email prayer requests for special intentions, or (2) join

the team to pray for other’s requests. The Prayer Request Team is a ministry of the

parish, but there are no regular meetings. Members would simply receive a call or email of the

prayer request and start praying for that intention. This is separate, but related to the Prayer List

in the bulletin. The Prayer List only has the name, but no specific intention mentioned.

Carol & Joe Dello Stritto coordinated the Prayer Request Team for our former Our Lady of Joy

Parish Evangelization Committee and will now do so for Holy Family Parish. To request prayers or find out more

about joining the Prayer Request Team, contact Carol Dello Stritto at 412-793-9567 or by email at

[email protected]. Pease leave your number if you want Carol to call you back.

FASTING BROTHERS

(An Extension of Seven Sisters)

The priests of Holy Family parish each have

a Seven Sisters group praying for them. This

is a quiet ministry of prayer. All prayer can

become more efficacious when aided with

fasting, and so we are looking for A FEW

GOOD MEN to strengthen the prayers of

those women who are committed in a

particular way to prayer for our priests.

According to the rules set up by the

apostolate six men form one group (there is

no fasting on Sundays) and each man has a

day of the week on which they fast or abstain

from something. You would choose the day

best suited for you, and stay with that day

every week. The commitment is for one year.

If you are drawn to fasting/abstaining as a

form of prayer for the benefit of our priests

please consider this joint, yet very private,

ministry.

To sign up or learn more contact

[email protected]

SEVEN SISTERS APOSTOLATE

BISHOP’S GROUP

The Seven Sisters Apostolate is a call to strengthen the Church by

ensuring a Holy Hour, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, is prayed

every day of the week for the sole intention of a specific priest or bishop.

You may know that each of the priests of Holy Family Parish has a different

Seven Sisters group praying for them. The commitment for one year is for;

one woman, one day of the week, one Holy Hour, one priest, one heart of

prayer.

Recently a group has begun for Bishop Zubik. A bishop’s group is a little

different in that it consists of three complete groups for one bishop. There

are three Holy Hours prayed every day exclusively for a bishop.

There are currently ten women who have begun to pray in this new group,

with a need for-you guessed it- eleven more!

If you are a woman who feels called to serve the Church through a

commitment of prayer please consider this apostolate. Seven Sisters has

spread all over the world, with groups in all fifty states in the USA. There

are still only a handful in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Let’s grow this beautiful

ministry to support our priests and Bishop, in thanksgiving for all that they

do.

To learn more visit sevensistersapostolate.org To get involved with the

Bishops group call Jane and leave a message at 724-325-1168.

“To strengthen the priest is to strengthen the Church.” St. John Vianney

Beautifying Our Sanctuaries

Holy Family Parish Art and Environment committee has been working on ways to beautify

our churches. Many of our churches use live plants in their sanctuaries. Over time these

plants begin to look tired and need replaced. If you would like to donate in honor of your

family or in memory of a loved one, please send a donation made payable to “Holy Family

Parish” to the attention of “Joyce Doyle - Sanctuary Plants.” Please indicate the church

and how the donation should be acknowledged in the bulletin. We will use the money to

purchase plants that are tolerant to the conditions of each church.

On Mission Prayer

Greene, Lawrence and Washington Counties be sustained and strengthened

by your grace. Help us to learn Jesus, to love Jesus and to live Jesus. Hear

this prayer and grant it through Jesus Christ our Lord, with the help of our dear

Blessed Mother, under the mantle of her love. Amen.
