HOLY FAMILY PARISH 27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Our Lady of the Rosary October 7th, 2020

This feast was instituted by Pope St. Pius V in thanksgiving for the great naval victory over the Turks at the battle of Le-panto on this day in the year 1570, a favor due to the recitation of the Rosary. This victory saved Europe from being overrun by the forces of Islam.

Lepanto, perhaps the most complete victory ever gained over the Ottoman Empire, on October 7, 1571, is commemorated by the invocation "Help of Christians," inserted in the Litany of Loret-to. At Belgrade the Turks were defeated on the Feast of Our Lady ad Nives in 1716. A second victory gained that year on the Octave of the Assumption determined Pope Clement XI to com-mand the Feast of the Rosary to be celebrated by the universal Church. Leo XIII added the invo-cation "Queen of the most Holy Rosary, pray for us," to the Litany of Loretto. The Feast is in real-ity a great festival of thanksgiving for the signal and countless benefits bestowed on Christendom through the Rosary of our blessed Queen.

In modern times successive popes have urged the faithful to pray the Rosary. It is a form of con-templative prayer, mental and vocal prayer, which brings down God’s blessing on the Church. It is a biblically inspired prayer which is centered on meditation on the salvific mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, who was so closely associated with her Son in his redeeming activity.

Things to Do:

Pray the Rosary, or 5 decades of the Rosary tonight with your family. Continue this practice Through October, the month that is especially dedicated to the Rosary. Read the encyclicals on the rosary, and the latest apostolic letter.

Learn the Luminous Mysteries. For families with younger children, it helps to have visual aids for the mysteries. Have a picture to flip at the beginning of each decade for the family Rosary. See the

Activities Bar for ideas.

Learn how to make rosaries, cord and/or wire for missions.

Learn about the great victory of Our Lady at the Battle of Lepanto. You can also read more about Pope St. Pius V, who instituted the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Read Cardinal Angelo Sodano's homily at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary.

"The Rosary, or Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the most excellent prayers to the Mother of God." Read the Directory on Popular Piety and Liturgy on the Rosary, particularly encouraging the practices of:

The recitation of the Rosary could be made more solemn in tone "by introducing those Scriptural passages corresponding with the various mysteries, some parts could be sung, roles could be distributed, and by solemnly opening and closing of prayer."

The custom of making an insertion in the recitation of the Hail Mary, which is an ancient one that has not completely disappeared, has often been recommended by the Pastors of the Church since it encourages meditation and the concurrence of mind and lips.

HOLY FAMILY PARISH 27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PRAYER AND REFLECTION: October 4, 2020 - 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time INTRODUCTION Judeo-Christian history and today’s readings remind us again that being called to be God’s people is a gift and a privilege. But it is also a responsibility that comes with expectations. Even in difficult times, we hear that what is offered to us is not to be squandered. We are free, of course, to respond however we choose. But if we accept our calling, it comes with a price. Being chosen, being Christian — as with all relationships — is not for the faint-hearted.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL We pray now for our many needs and the needs of the whole world. That we may have the courage to act on Paul’s words to give witness by lives that are true, just, gracious, honorable …we pray, For those throughout the world who suffer for their faith … we pray,

For those who falsely portray Christianity as a source of material success … we pray,

For those who have never felt gifted by God or anyone else … we pray,

For those awaiting a good harvest and those whose harvests are disappointing or disastrous … we pray, For those who are responsible for the future of our country, our environment and our safety … we pray,

For those who need public assistance of any kind, and for those who have been denied assistance … we pray,

For the sick and the dying, the discouraged and those in need in this community … we pray,

PRAYER: God, gracious Giver, we thank you for calling us to be your people. Help us to be faithful in our commitment to you and to one another, and forgive us when we fail. Strengthen our sense of responsibility that comes with the gift you have given us. We humbly ask this the name of your beloved Son, Jesus. Amen.

We pray…..

For those that are sick or recently in the hospital…

Mas é também uma responsabilidade que vem com as expectativas. Mesmo em tempos difíceis, Ouvimos dizer que o que é oferecido para nós não é para ser desperdiçado.Somos livres, of course, para responder, no entanto nós escolhemos. Mas se aceitarmos nossa vocação, Ele vem com um preço. Ser escolhido, ser cristão— tal como acontece com todas as relações— Não é para os fracos de coração.

L.J.C. ET M.I. September 30, 2020

Very Dear Friends,

It has been a long time since I last wrote to you. I hope that all is well for you and yours.

I have been sick-blood poisoning and was in the hospital for one week and in the Oblate Infirmary 3 weeks. Thank God that I am back in my

regular room and can come to the parish.

I am not sure when things will get back to “normal”. It will probably be a long time. I talked to Sr. Joan, she is doing well and sends everyone

her best regards. Fr. Gil is doing well and is keeping to his ordinary schedule.

Blessings & best wishes,

FFr. Don

Saint John Leonardi’s Story “I am only one person! Why should I do anything? What good would it do?” Today, as in any age, people seem plagued with the dilemma of getting in-volved. In his own way, John Leonardi answered these questions. He chose to become a priest. After his ordination, Fr. Leonardi became very active in the works of the min-istry, especially in hospitals and prisons. The example and dedication of his work attracted several young laymen who began to assist him. They later became priests themselves. John lived after the Protestant Reformation and the Council of Trent. He and his followers projected a new congregation of diocesan priests. For some reason the plan, which was ultimately approved, provoked great political opposition. John was exiled from his home town of Lucca, Italy, for almost the entire remainder of his life. He received encouragement and help from Saint Philip Neri, who gave him his lodgings—along with the care of his cat! In 1579, John formed the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, and published a compendium of Christian doctrine that remained in use until the 19th century. Father Leonardi and his priests became a great power for good in Italy, and their congregation was confirmed by Pope Clement in 1595. John died at the age of 68 from a disease caught when tending those stricken by the plague. By the deliberate policy of the founder, the Clerks Regu-lar of the Mother of God have never had more than 15 churches, and today form only a very small congrega-tion. The Liturgical Feast of Saint John Leonardi is October 9.

Our priests are often at the center of efforts that build

strong support systems for all of us. In addition to

their daily pastoral responsibilities, they help establish

social service organizations, offer spiritual support for first

responders, operate parish food pantries, and recently, in

response to the pandemic, put their lives at risk to provide

comfort and peace to those suffering with COVID-19.

Healthier priests build stronger communities. And the

Clergy Health and Retirement Trust (CHRT) is dedicated to

keeping our priests healthy.

This September, you can support the CHRT’s mission

by giving to the special collection at Masses on

September 19/20. Every gift makes a difference and is

a symbol of gratitude for all our priests who don’t just

observe need in our communities; they seek it out so

they can respond.
