Welcome to St. James Cathedral!

We are glad to welcome you to St. James Cathedral. We are following the Center for Disease Control and City of Chicago guidelines for Phase 5 of the COVID-19 pandemic, and so:

· For those who are fully vaccinated, wearing masks and social distancing is optional. For those who are not fully vaccinated, wearing masks and social distancing is required.

· The side pews are set aside for those who wish to continue to be masked and socially distanced in worship.

· While we will resume offering the Peace physically, this is not an obligation. It is still acceptable to pass the Peace by a gesture if you do not feel comfortable with physical interaction at this point.

· For the time being, Communion will continue to be served in one kind (the bread) at standing stations instead of the altar rail.

HOLY COMMUNION

We offer God’s gracious gift of Holy Communion to anyone who wishes to receive it. During this time communion will be received in one kind (the bread). Let the priest know if you would need a gluten-free wafer. If you prefer to receive a blessing, come forward and cross your arms over your chest. We are also happy to bring Communion to you if you are unable to come to the altar rail. Please let the usher know if this would be helpful for you.

PARKING

On Sundays, reduced-rate parking is available at R.O.W. Parking Garage (50 E. Ohio) for $2 for up to six hours from the time of entering the garage. Discounts are also available for all-day parking at Ohio Ontario Self Park (33 W. Ontario) for $11. To receive a reduced-rate parking voucher, please go to the Welcome Center desk in the narthex.

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles. (11:27–12:3)

At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in Judea; this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.)

The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

VOLUNTARY Pageant Sowerby

MUSIC NOTE

St. James Cathedral boasts an incredible legacy of composers. Dudley Buck, Peter Lutkin, Clarence Dickinson, and Leo Sowerby - leading voices in church music of their day - have all served as musicians here. Sowerby was the most prolific and successful of all, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1946. He composed Eternal light in honor of his predecessor, Clarence Dickinson.

Pageant is regarded as one of the most difficult organ pieces ever written. Sowerby composed it for the Italian virtuoso Fernando Germani, who embarked upon a US tour in 1931. Sowerby composed Pageant to test Germani’s formidable pedal technique. After learning the piece in his cabin on the boat to America, Germani wrote to Sowerby, “Now write me something really difficult!”

The voluntary is part of our act of worship, and thus we ask you to refrain from applause. The best way to show your appreciation is to listen attentively and use the music as a space for personal devotion. We invite you to greet the organist at the choir loft steps after the voluntary has concluded.
