THE YEAR OF VOCATIONS ``Reawaken the Call''

During his homily at last year's Chrism Mass, Bishop DiMarzio announced a "Year of Vocations" for the Brooklyn Diocese - Aug. 4, 2017 to Aug. 4 2018. The reason he chose the date Aug. 4th is that this is the Feast of St. John Vianney, the Curé of Ars. The purpose of this special year has been to draw the entire Catholic people of Brooklyn and Queens into prayer for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and to help encourage young people to be open to these callings. A vocation is a call from God - and every Christian is called at Baptism to be a follower of Jesus, a disciple, a witness. We spend the first twenty years or so of life figuring out how Jesus wants us to serve and what is our vocation. The most common Christian Vocation is Matri-mony. This vocation forms one of the strongest foundations of our Church. Others are called to priesthood or religious consecration. Through His priests Jesus continues to shepherd His Church. At present, in the United States, we are in what is called a "vocation crisis". In this country, the Church was very accustomed to an abundance of vocations to priestly and religious life. For example, there was a time in our Diocese when every parish had three, four or five priests and every parish school had 8-16 sisters. Every year, classes of 20 to 30 young men were ordained to the priesthood - in these years, we consider a class of 5 to be large. Fr. Sean Suckiel is the priest of our Diocese designated by Bishop Dimarzio as the Director of Vocations. It is he who has designed the activities and events for the Year. Bishop DiMarzio gave a theme for the year: ``Reawaken the Call''. Here is Fr. Suckiel's introductory message: ``The harvest is rich, but the laborers are few, pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into

his harvest.'' (Lk 10:2) Jesus' appeal for ``Praying for Vocations'' is a crucial way in creating a culture of vocations in this present time. Vocations are a gift from God; it is Jesus who has chosen us not that we have chosen Him (Jn 15:16). Therefore, it is important that we pray for vocations since the answer to an invitation from the Father is always a great Grace. On Sunday October 30, 2016, to mark the 20th anniversary of his episcopal ordination, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio celebrated a special Mass of thanksgiving with priests, religious and lay faithful of the Diocese in attendance. The

Bishop challenged the Diocese to ``renewed'' commitment in vocation recruitment and wishes to declare a ``Year of Vocations''. The bishop is calling the Diocese to double our efforts in identifying and recruiting young men and women to the priesthood and religious life. Throughout his episcopal ministry, in the Diocese of Brooklyn, Bishop DiMarzio has made the vocation apostolate at top priority and pledges to continue to keep this at the forefront of his ministry in the remaining years as the Bishop of Brooklyn. The Year of Vocations Planning

Committee therefore would encourage all Parishes in the Diocese of Brooklyn to reemphasize the importance of praying for vocations. The Year of Vocations requires the support of all priests, religious, deacons and lay faithful within theDiocese of Brooklyn. The purpose of this year is to inspire young people to ``Reawaken the Call'' within them. And by extension deepen the commitment of all priests and religious to interior renewal of their vocations for a stronger and more effective witness to the Gospel in Brooklyn and Queens. In discerning one's Vocation, it is not accomplished in a single act or vocation event, but in accompaniment with Jesus and those people who inspire us.

L'ANNÉE DES VOCATIONS ``Réveillez l'Appel''

Mgr. DiMarzio avait annoncé une "Année de Vocations" pour le Diocèse de Brooklyn - 4 août 2017 au 4 août 2018. La raison d'avoir choisi le 4 août c'est que celle-ci est la Fête de St. Jean Vianney, le Curé d'Ars. Le but de cette année spéciale a été d'attirer tout le peuple Catholique de Brooklyn et Queens à la prière pour vocations au sacerdoce et à la vie religieuse, et d'aider à encourager les jeunes à être ouverts à ces appels. Une vocation est un appel de Dieu et chaque Chrétien est appelé au Baptême à être un partisan de Jésus, un disciple, un témoin. Nous passons les premiers vingt ans de notre vie en discernant comment Jésus veut que nous servions et quelle est notre vocation. La Vocation Chrétienne la plus commune est celle du Mariage. Cette vocation forme une des fondations les plus fortes de notre Église. Des autres sont appelés au sacerdoce ou à la consécration religieuse. C'est par Ses prêtres que Jésus continue à donner pâturage à Son Église. Au présent, aux États-Unis, nous nous trouvons dans une dite "crise de vocations". Dans ce pays, l'Église était habituée à une abondance de vocations à la vie sacerdotale et religieuse. Par exemple, il y avait un moment au Diocèse de Brooklyn et Queens où chaque paroisse avait trois, quatre ou cinq prêtres, et chaque école paroissiale avait 8-16 sœurs. Ces jours n'existent plus. Et aussi, chaque année, classes de 20 à 30 jeunes hommes étaient ordonnés au sacerdoce - maintenant nous considérons une classe de 5 comme un grand numéro. Père Sean Suckiel est le prêtre de notre Diocèse désigné par Mgr. Dimarzio comme Directeur de Vocations. C'est lui qui a réalisé les activités et les évènements pour l'Année. Mgr. DiMarzio avait donné un thème pour l'année: ``Réveillez l'Appel''. Voici le message d'introduction que Père Suckiel a écrit: ``La moisson est abondante, mais les

ouvrier peu nombreux. Priez donc le maître de la moisson d'envoyer des ouvriers dans sa moisson.'' (Lc 10.2) L'appel de Jésus de ``priez pour les vocations'' est un chemin important en créant une culture de vocations dans ces jours. Les vocations sont un don de Dieu; c'est Jésus Qui nous a choisis; ce n'est pas nous qui l'avons choisi (Jn 15:16). Alors, c'est important que nous priions pour les vocations, étant donné que la réponse à une invitation du Père est toujours une grande grâce. Cette Année de Vocations exige l'appui de tous les prêtres, religieux, diacres et les fidèles laïques au-dedans du Diocèse de Brooklyn. Le but de cette année et d'inspirer les jeunes à ``Réveiller l'Appel'' au-dedans de soi-mêmes et, par extension, à approfondir l'engagement de tous les prêtres et religieux à une rénovation intérieure de leurs vocations pour un témoignage plus fort et plus effectif à l'Évangile en Brooklyn et Queens. Pour discerner une Vocation, on ne le fait que par un seul acte ou un seul évènement, sinon avec l'accompagnement de Jésus et ceux qui nous inspirent.

EL AÑO DE VOCACIONES ``Despierta la Llamada''

El Msñr. DiMarzio había proclamado un "Año de Vocaciones" para la Diócesis de Brooklyn - 4 de agosto de 2017 al 4 de agosto de 2018. La razón de haber escogido el 4 de agosto es porque es la Fiesta de San Juan Vianney, el Cura de Ars. La meta de este año especial ha sido de invitar a todo el pueblo Católico de Brooklyn y Queens a la oración por vocaciones al sacerdocio y a la vida religiosa. y de ayudar a animar a los jóvenes a estar abiertos a esta llamadas. Una vocación es una llamada de Dios - y todo cristiano está llamado desde Bautismo a ser un seguidor de Jesús, un discípulo, un testigo. Pasamos los primeros veinte años, más o menos, discerniendo cómo Jesús quiere que Le sirvamos y qué es nuestra vocación. La vocación más común de un cristiano es el Matrimonio. Esta vocación forma una de las bases más fuertes de la Iglesia. Otros están llamados al sacerdocio o a la consagración religiosa. A través de Sus sacerdotes, Jesús continúa a pastorear Su Iglesia. Hoy día, en los Estados Unidos, nos encontramos en lo que llaman una "crisis de vocaciones". En este país, la Iglesia estaba acostumbrada a una abundancia de vocaciones a la vida sacerdotal y religiosa. Por ejemplo, hubo un tiempo en la Diócesis de Brooklyn y Queens cuando toda parroquia tenía a tres, cuatro o cinco sacerdotes, y cada escuela parroquial tenía entre 8-16 hermanas. Aquellos días están bien pasados. Además, cada años clases de 20 a 30 hombres jóvenes se ordenaban al sacerdocio - hoy día llamamos el año bendito cuando hay 5 ordenados. Padre Sean Suckiel es el sacerdote en nuestra Diocèse designado por Msñr. Dimarzio como Director de Vocaciones. Es él que ha realizado las actividades y los eventos para el Año. Msñr. DiMarzio ha dado un tema al año: ``Despierta la Llmada''. Aquí tienen la introducción que el Padre Suckiel ha escrito: ``La mies es mucha y los obreros pocos.

Rueguen, pues, al dueño de la mies que envíe obreros a su mies.'' (Lc 10.2) La llamada de Jesús de ``rogar por las vocaciones'' es un camino importante en creando una cultura de vocaciones en estos días. Las vocaciones son un don de Dios; es Jesús que nos ha escogido; no somos nosotros que lo hemos escogido (Jn 15:16). Entonces, es importante que roguemos por las vocaciones, ya que la respuesta a una invitación del Padre siempre es una gran gracia. El domingo, 30 de oct. de 2016, para marcar el 20mo aniversario de su ordenación episcopal, Msñr. Nicholas DiMarzio celebró una Misa de Acción de Gracias con unos sacerdotes, religiosos y laicos de la Diócesis. Msñr. la ha puesto un desafió a la Diócesis: un compromiso ``renovado'' de reclutamiento para las vocaciones, y él desea declarar un

``Año de Vocaciones''. Nuestro obispo le llama a la Diócesis a doblar nuestros esfuerzos para identificar y reclutar a jóvenes al sacerdocio y a la vida religiosa. En todo momento de su ministerio como obispo de la Diócesis de Brooklyn, Msñr. DiMarzio ha hecho el apostolado de las vocaciones su prioridad y se ha comprometido a continuar a ponerlo primero en su ministerio en los años que le quedan como Obispo de Brooklyn. El Comité de Planificación para este Año de Vocaciones pues quisiera animar la todas las

parroquias de la Diócesis de Brooklyn a subrayar de nuevo la importancia de orar por las vocaciones. Este Año de Vocaciones exige el apoyo de todos los sacerdotes, religiosos y los fieles laicos dentro de la Diócesis de Brooklyn. La meta de este año es de inspirar a los jóvenes a ``Despertar la Llamada'' dentro de si mismos y, por extensión, a profundizar el compromiso de todos los sacerdotes y religiosos a una renovación interior de sus vocaciones por un testimonio más fuerte y más eficaz al Evangelio en Brooklyn y Queens. Para discernir une Vocación, uno no los hace por un solo acto o un solo evento, sinon con el acompañamiento de Jesús y los que nos inspiran.
