Today’s Gospel presents Jesus speaking “as one having authority

and not as the scribes” as He casts the unclean spirit out of the

man. The listeners are spellbound. Even though the priests were

in charge of the Temple rituals, scribes (later called rabbis) were

those who copied the Torah (the first five books of the Old Tes-

tament, or “The Pentateuch”), and ultimately controlled the in-

terpretation of the Torah. Today we have “unclean spirits”: vio-

lence, self-medication, narcissism, entitlement, and greed. And

there are many more! We must let The Lord cast out these things

from our lives. We would rather not face up to them or undo

them, and that is the challenge.

We are invited to sing joyfully in today’s Psalm. Luckily, our

musical garden is a field of many colors. There was a time when

Catholics identified with a narrow musical style. Today we not

only have the centuries-old music of the church, but we incorpo-

rate other musical genres in our worship. The Children’s Choir

(9:00) sings of the darkness mentioned in today’s Gospel Accla-

mation which Jesus casts out of the world with His Light. And

the Choir Anthem (11:30) sings of the “Cleansing Stream”

which casts out sin and washes us clean!

Ernest Camerota

A Family Perspective from the Family Life Education

Office (a Hope Appeal agency)

Today’s gospel reminds us “unclean

spirits” still haunt our families. These

“spirits” thrive inside our grudges,

punishing silence, impatience and

abruptness. Today, Jesus offers you the

“authority” to cast out these spirits from your life and your

family.
