The first generation of moguls were self-taught engineers, tinkerers, itinerate entertainers and street smart showmen. Often new immigrants, many of

the industry’s unlikely founders arrived in America with ambitious dreams, combined with the will and imagination to make those dreams come true.

At its heart, the movie industry is a business of relationships. This series delves into the inter-personal dealings, collaborations and conflicts between the powerful personalities that created an industry and an art form. The development of American cinema is traced from the early inventions of

Thomas Edison and Adolf Zukor’s penny arcades, through the development of the studio system’s biggest hitters such as MGM, Universal, Fox and Paramount

Pictures, concluding with the eventual power shift towards a newera of star driven production in the 1960s.

The creative geniuses behind the movies also had their role to playin the expansion of Hollywood. The movies were more than simple

entertainment. Not only did they reflect their eras and develop alongsidethe technological advances of their time, they also set the

standards in fashion, everyday attitudes and behaviour.

In this series, the history of movie making is tracked from the early Silent Era genius of Mack Sennet’s comedy productions at Keystone Studios

and D.W. Griffith’s ambitious and controversial epics, through Frank Capraand Billy Wilder’s populist classics, to the later ground-breaking work

of Orson Welles, Elia Kazan, Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick.

At first, film actors were nameless, but it didn’t take long for a fan base to develop for Charlie Chaplin and the girlish Mary Pickford, who were amongst

the earliest stars to experience the public’s adulation for celebrity. A new breed of actors rose to prominence with the advent of ‘the Talkies’. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn formed a sparring partnership, whilst Clark Gable’s dashing

charm contrasted with Jimmy Stewart’s everyman appeal. The Post-War Era delivered yet another bolder generation of stars such as Marlon Brando, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, before the sixties embraced the more experimental

work of Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Warren Beatty.

The glittering careers of these icons represented the changing tastes of audiences and are reviewed in fascinating detail against the backdrop

of rapid movie industry expansion and dramatic historic events.
