Hollydale News Hollydale Newsletter: W/E 22nd November 2019 No.5
Dear Parents and Carers, It has been a very busy last couple of weeks at our school. On the 11.11.19, as well as a Remembrance Day Assembly, we read the poem ‘Flander's Fields’ as part of the history and background of the remembrance poppy. We then held a two-minute silence to remember those who lost their lives during the First World War as well as in more recent conflicts. Following on from that, some children made beautiful remembrance poppies. Anti-bullying- Change starts with us! Last week, the whole school took part in 'Anti-bullying week' with the theme 'change starts with us'. Throughout the week children participated in valuable learning opportunities to promote their awareness of what bullying is and what we can do to prevent it. Children particularly enjoyed wearing their odd socks to school on Friday, and the money raised from this and the sales of anti-bullying wristbands will go to the anti-bullying alliance charity. All pupils got the chance to work with a trained actor in a drama workshop exploring types of bullying and promoting acceptance. Each class has made an anti-bullying pledge, look out for these displayed around the school! Emergency closure- heating break down I must again apologise for the inconvenience of having to close the school on Tuesday (19.11.19). Please note that this situation was outside of my control and while we tried every means possible to remain open, it would have been unreasonable to expect our children to sit in cold classrooms with their coats on, below the legal temperature of 16°c. Thankfully we were able to have the heating up and running again the following day. The heating engineers have assured me that this should not happen again any time soon. Fingers crossed for a boiler that sees us through the winter months ahead. Lost property Can I remind parents to make sure all items of clothing are named, particularly jumpers and coats which children often remove when they are in different parts of the school. Children tend to forget taking these items off; however, if they are named, it is very quick and easy to reunite them with their owners. We do have a considerable amount of clothing in our lost property and this would help to alleviate this. Health and safety A few parents have been entering the school building, despite adults not being permitted inside without registering first at the office. SLT will be monitoring this and I hope you will understand that these measures are to safeguard your children whilst they are at school. This weekend Hannah and I will be spending time writing Christmas card lists and going for a long walk around our local area. Wishing you all a great weekend with your families!

Aspiration Educational Visit Today a group of 12 children from Y5 Hazel and Y6 Willow Classes accompanied by parents went on an aspiration visit to the corporate Law firm Weil Gotshall and Manges in the heart of the City of London in Holborn. The children were given a guided tour of the premises and spoke to a range of staff, which included: Business Lawyers, Secretaries, Corporate responsibility employees and IT workers. They had the privilege of finding out about all these different career paths and what they would have to study if they wanted to take the same career route. The children were very engaged and asked some excellent questions. They loved the grand building with all the amazing facilities and had a delicious lunch. Some pupils commented that they would really like to get a job that the Law firm when they are older. This was a very successful visit which supports our pupils in believing that you can achieve at being the best that they can be! Kathleen Costello - Family Support Worker Year 4 Birch Class Educational Visit to the Tate Britain Year 4 have had the pleasure of being involved in the Steve McQueen year 3 project. Beginning last year, they took part in workshops run by the Tate gallery exploring identity, hopes and dreams. On Monday they were lucky enough to go and spot their class portrait in the exhibition alongside more than 800 schools across London. It was extremely exciting to see ourselves on the wall of such a well-established gallery!

Request for special leave during term time Please remember requests for absence during term time should be made to the Headteacher. These can only be authorised in exceptional circumstances. Getting to school on time We are having a big focus on punctuality this year. Most children arrive on time every day, however some do not, and we are hoping to make punctuality even better this year. The teaching day starts promptly at 9.00am where children practise key reading and phonics skills. Even being 5 minutes late each day is equivalent to 3 school days of learning time in a year! Ms Costello, our family support worker, is here to support parents and carers with punctuality and attendance. She will be on the gate regularly to monitor punctuality so that rapid improvements are made. Sports News - Bowling for Hollydale! Read all about it! This week, eight children from Y1-2, were selected to take place in an inter-school bowling competition organised by London PE and School Sports Network. This was a great team building exercise, where children improved their hand eye co-ordination and took turns trying to win points for their team. All the children were challenged to use mental maths skills to add up the scores, and more importantly everyone enjoyed themselves and had fun on this great day out!

Reading expectations at Hollydale school Home School Partnership
Please note all teachers will be monitoring reading records closely this term and we expect all parents to support us in our drive to ensure that the pupils attending Hollydale are becoming critical readers. In EYFS and KS1, we expect parents and carers to comment in the records at least once a week. In KS2, please can you monitor that your child is keeping a log of their daily reading? All children should be reading every day for a minimum of 15 minutes.
Congratulations to the following pupils who have practised their instruments well this week:
Star Pianists: Ruby Sweeny & Nathaniel Foster Star Guitarist: Alex James
Start Chorister: Hilary Star Recorder Players Meika and Hero
Due to a lack of parental support, our Christmas Fair will need to be scaled back considerably. Without the support of parents, we cannot run such events as the main business of teachers is to teach your children to a high standard. As a result of this, we will be having a Winter Wonderland after school event on 17th December 2019.
The school will be organising a Christmas Market enterprise project where each class runs a stall and a prize is awarded to the class that makes the most profit!
We are asking parents to contribute dishes and help run a Christmas Food Hall at the event. Please bring along a dish and /or help to serve food. Plates of food will be sold for £1.
In addition, there will be a Santa's Grotto, raffle and performance from the school choir. Please come along to the planning meeting at 9am on Wednesday 27th November to get involved. If
you are unable to attend the meeting, but want to help, please leave your contact details at the school office.
A letter will also be sent out early next week, asking parents to specify how they can support this event. Thank you in advance for your support, as we continue to be the best that we can be!
