Lucky Dip Midsummer Fayre
Saturday 21st June 10.00am to 3.00pm
This is definitely a date for your diary.
The Lucky Dip group have started planning for their summer event. The theme is ‘Village Green’ – so think yummy cream teas, Morris dancing, plants, performance of music and dance, lovely local crafts and lots more.
We have applied for a road closure again which means we will have a performance space – we had really positive comments about this at the Christmas Lucky Dip.
If you would like to perform at the event then we would love to hear from you.
Stalls are already being booked; there is an early bird rate of £16 if you book before May 23rd after which it is £18 (flat rate of £20 for non-Hollingdean-ers).
To book a stall, more information, or if you want to perform, contact Liz on 01273 236160 or email [email protected]
Does anyone have any ‘Astroturf’ that could be used to help create the green? Please contact Liz if you can help.

Council Parking Survey
Brighton & Hove City Council are proposing to review and update the parking standards used to assess the level of parking that should be provided in new developments. A consultation is currently running which allows you to discuss and comment on the issues and options surrounding parking standards so that your views can be considered. The survey is running for a four week period between 17th March and 14th April 2014.
If you would like to take part in this consultation please go to the council’s website portal at http://bit.ly/1pmvcmZ.
Hertford Infants’ News
From Zoe McGuigan Acting Head Teacher
A warm welcome to all Hertford families in the community! I have received nothing but warmth when welcoming you into the playground in the morning and this has been most encouraging. I feel blessed to be in this role for the short term and will support children, staff, governors and families in all that I do.
It has been a very positive start to the year! Learning has taken off from the first day of the first minute that the children came through the door and I am encouraged and so very proud when I walk into the classroom environments and spend time with the children seeing such enthused, independent learning.
The teaching and learning continues to excite the
children; their eyes brightly shining with their
learning and this is exactly how it should be.
I have recently asked the children for their ideas
for new playground markings and their responses
were fantastic, including ‘Space Bases’, more
Hop-Scotch, and Snakes and Ladders on a
hundred square and the like.
Again it is the support in the school community
that has helped this along - one of our Dads who
has involved a cartoonist to sketch and design for
us and is organising paint and people to come and
work on this project in the holidays. I can’t wait to
see the children’s faces after Easter!
There is also a fantastic group of parents; ‘The
Biscuit Club’ which meet here every Friday
morning and discuss how they can organise child
and family orientated events to support raising
funds for the school whilst having great fun, so
watch this space for event and dates!
Thank you again for such warmth. I adore this school and will continue to put my heart and soul into it!
Free nursery places We have spaces available in our lovely nursery class for September 2014. If you have a child who is 3-4 years old they are entitled to 15 hours a week free nursery, which we provide through a range of sessions. Contact the school office for more information or to arrange a visit to come and see what we do! Tel: 01273 552931

Councillor Jeane Lepper
Dangerous Parking
I have been contacted by a number of residents about bad parking on corners in parts of Hollingdean where there are no double yellow lines. People are concerned that this can be dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians because it often blocks the view of on-coming traffic or of people trying to cross the road. I have asked council officers to look at all the places which residents have reported to me as potential danger–spots to see if they meet the criteria for double yellow lines. Some people have suggested that there has been more of this dangerous parking since the council brought in the neighbouring Area J residents parking scheme as people try to avoid parking there and instead look for any spare space at all in nearby Hollingdean roads.

Cherry Tree Nursery - places available now
Cherry Tree Nursery is a purpose-built local authority nursery, and a part of Hollingdean Children’s Centre. We have large open plan space for children aged 3 months to 5 years, with exciting outdoor gardens. We are open from 8am to 6pm all year round. Children learn through play in a safe, fun, stimulating environment, where each child is respected, valued and treated as an individual. We currently have places available for children aged 3 months to 5 years, and offer funded places for some 2 year olds and all 3 and 4 year olds. We are rated as OUTSTANDING by Ofsted! “Children and staff smile and laugh often. The atmosphere is busy and purposeful and staff can be seen to nurture and support children’s skills in a warm and caring manner” – Ofsted.
Come and have a look around our friendly welcoming nursery. We’d love to see you! Parking is free or we are on the number 50 bus route. Telephone 01273 296052 to book a showaround.

Tree planting
Hurray! The tree planting in Hollingdean has started - you may have noticed trees appearing outside St Richards in Beal Crescent, in Horton Road and other lucky places.
Most of the trees are fruit/nut, so lovely food for the local community!
The trees have been planted by local volunteers working with the Planting Up Hollingdean project. Our thanks go to them.
The tree planting will continue in the autumn. Watch out for information in Hollingdean News nearer the time.

Our local history
The new Hollingdean Estate was started in 1951 on land that had formerly been known as the ‘North Bristol Allotments’.
Pauline Hair grew up in Davey Drive and remembers “When we moved in to Davey Drive, all the back gardens were just one large field which the farmer would drive his sheep through on the way down to the abattoir. The first time we visited the house, I was about three years old and managed to completely lose myself in the fields much to my mother's dismay!!”

Are you in pain or suffering from health problems?
If so, acupuncture could help. Used for thousands of years to alleviate pain and restore, promote and maintain health, acupuncture, like all medicine, often requires a course of treatment in order to be effective. However, the high cost of treatments often prevents people from being able to commit to enough treatments to get themselves better, and stay better.
At Brighton Community Acupuncture treatments are offered on a sliding scale from £8 to £25 to make acupuncture affordable and accessible to all. Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of illnesses and symptoms. For more information, or to book an appointment, please call: 07964 291417, or e-mail us: [email protected] , or check out our website: www.brightoncommunityacupuncture.co.uk
