Present Perfect tense

The present perfect is used when the time period has NOT finished:

I have been to two countries this month.(This month has not finished yet.)

Past Simple tense

The simple past is used when thetime period HAS finished:

I went to two countries last month.(Last month has finished.)

Present Perfect tense

The present perfect is often used when giving recent news:

Mehmet has travelled to France again.(This is new information.)

Past Simple tense

The simple past is used when giving older information:

Mehmet travelled to France last year.(This is old information.)

Present Perfect tense

The present perfect is used when thetime is not specific:

I have seen that beach already.(We don't know when.)

Past Simple tense

The simple past is used when the time is clear:

I saw that beach on Thursday.(We know exactly when.)

Present Perfect tense

The present perfect is used with for and since, when the actions have not finished :

Since 2007 I’ve lived in England.I have lived in England for five years.

(I still live in England.)

Past Simple tense

The simple past is used with for and since, when the actions have already finished:

I lived in England for five years.

(I don't live in England now.)
