Why we hike…….. Northeast Ohio is a land of plenty and especially a land

of variety. Every hiker has a favorite topography. Per-

haps you are a hill lover - a view from on high is such a

bonus. Some love lake loops, recognizing that they

have a serene quality and forests offer a comfort of their

own. Or perhaps you are fascinated by wetlands. The

sticky goo of a bog and the temporary squishiness of a

vernal pool create something like a giant petri dish,

growing the strangest stuff. Whatever land type is your

favorite, you can probably find it here in northeastern

Ohio. Between the gluey bogs and slippery marshes

and the edge of Lake Eric, you’ll find pretty waterfalls,

steep outcrops of shale and Sharon conglomerate, bore-

al forests, and glacial formations.

This year we visited three outstanding gardens: spring

flowers at Kingwood Center in Mansfield, full summer

splendor at Fellows Riverside Garden in Youngstown,

and early fall wonder atop the canopy walk and tower at

Holden Arboretum in Kirtland. We marveled at the

Mischler weaving mill in Marshallville and discovered

hidden beauty and historical significance along the Tow-

path Trail in downtown Akron. Our luncheons always

are a time to socialize and discuss the latest hikes. Lin-

da Littler and Penny Marquette open their homes and

feed our souls as well as our appetites. A special thank

you to Elise Bennett for inviting us to her Marblehead

home. We loved the hike at East Harbor State Park

and along the shores of Lake Erie. The lunch at the pri-

Sad to say that rain caused us to cancel three of our final

hikes. But, we will definitely have them on next year’s

schedule since the leaders have done all the pre-hike

preparation and are eager for the rest of the group to see

these locales – Hach-Otis State Nature Preserve,

Beartown Lakes, and Piney Woods at Goodyear.

Finally, I must thank all of our hikers. They are a wonder-

ful, interesting, fun-loving bunch of ladies. I treasure the

memories and look forward to future hikes in our delightful

Northeast Ohio.

Did you bring your Passport???

Each year our ever-resourceful leader Sylvia Johnson reminds all participants

once, twice and many times to bring their passports on the Shaw Festival trip

to Niagara on the Lake in Ontario, Canada. Canada is a foreign country, and

unlike in the good old days when border crossings were just a question from

the guard about ‘business or pleasure’, now it is a big deal with lots of high

tech security. So, I arrive early at the UA parking lot and load my suitcase

onto the bus, then sit down and chat with the other travelers. Was reminiscing

about situation several years past when we discovered someone had not

brought their passport while driving toward Canada, and in that instance the

bus had to turn around and return to Akron area so that the passport could be

retrieved. Well, all of a sudden I realized that I had also forgotten that neces-

sary document – what a dummy! Luckily we hadn’t left the parking lot yet. So,

I quickly told Sylvia and bus driver my problem and said that I would go home

and get my passport, then drive my car to the rest stop in Erie where I would

park the car and rejoin the group going onward. No time to wonder if this

would work; just do it. Luckily all the traffic lights were green and most of the

driving was on interstate. Have to admit that I exceeded the speed limit at

times. I caught up with the bus just before Erie and everything worked out.

WHEW!!

So, the moral of this story is to never think you have everything you need until

you go over Sylvia’s letter again and again. She writes all those instructions

for a reason!

Oh, by the way, we had another gorgeous time at the Shaw. The weather was

perfect. The hotel was so elegant. The plays were excellent and visually ex-

citing. The shops and restaurants were varied and had something for every-

one. The flowers were magnificent and Niagara Falls defies description. You

really must come next year!!! BUT, Don’t Forget Your Passport!!

Thanks to Leslie Bain for sharing her story.
