    for the year (6 issues)

In the last few months Ive been reminded that the only certainty in life is that change is inevitable. Our jobs change, relationships end or shift, and we experience loss as well as gain. A difficult lesson to learn is how to let go and appreciate what we have. In yoga there is a concept called the law of detachment. The idea is that we have little control over change in our lives but we can control how we react to it, and learn to embrace the uncertainty by relinquishing our attachments to things, ideas and outcomes.

    {Letter From The Editor}

    INTERN FOR THE ANIMAL PRINT!

If youre looking for a fall internship where you will learn many aspects of magazine publishing and event planning, please email

your resum and a short message about yourself to [email protected].

Those of us who share our lives with animals learn that lesson very quickly. You cant control a new puppy, adopted dog, or foster... as much as we try! Dogs learn at their own pace, and we are at their mercy. Im often acutely aware of this when a foster dog arrives. My current foster dog Logan is a new lesson. As all of my foster dogs before him, he arrived and seemed a bit confused about all of the change. His previous life consisted of surviving in a dump, where he was most likely abandoned by his previous owner. He is the kind of dog that craves attention, and I can only imagine how difficult life alone has been for this guy. He is beginning to learn what acceptable behavior is, but Ive had to let go of my timeline and let him acclimate at his own pace. With foster dogs, and life in general, once I let go of the notion of control, I begin to appreciate what I have everyday. Having this attitude also helps when its time to say goodbye to my fosters and send them on to their new lives. Fostering a dog is one of the more rewarding challenges Ive experienced, and I encourage anyone whos ever thought about it to act now. So many dogs need transitional homes and, while it can be difficult to say goodbye, these animals may just teach you how to give up control and simply live in the moment. If youre interested in learning more about Logan, please read about him on page 24. If youre interested in fostering, check out Foster a Lonely Pet for the Holidays on page 28. I hope you enjoy our new issue, packed with gift ideas for all your four-legged friends and those who love them! Happy Holidays! Stephanie Georgia editor/publisher

Loyal Dog Hitches a Ride on Side of Ambulance to Stay with Sick Owner When his human fell ill and was taken away via ambulance, a loyal little dog wasnt about to let them drive off without him!Texas rancher, 85-year old JR Nicholson began feeling dizzy, so he called for help. When EMTs arrived, they loaded Nicholson into the ambulance and headed off for the hour-long drive to the hospital. About 20 min-utes into the trek, another vehicle flagged down the driver, alerting him to an extra passenger clinging to the outside of the ambulance. When they pulled over, EMTs found Buddy, Nicholsons loyal, 35-pound Beagle mix, perched on the vehicles exterior side step where hed ridden for about 20 miles! While the crew unloaded Nicholson and wheeled him into the emergency room, Buddy waited in the ambulance. But, the curious fella wouldnt just sit there. It was kind of funny. We were inside and he had jumped onto the control switch and turned on the sirens and the lights, Brown remembered. We didnt know what was going on.Nicholson was released just a few hours later. Nurses brought him outside to be reunited with his loyal companion.Nicholson had rescued Buddy from a local animal shelter just 4-months prior. Clearly the pair developed a fast and strong bond!

Dog Rescued from Michael Vicks Bad Newz Kennels Wins Dog of the Year

A group of outstanding animals and people were honored at this years ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cru-elty to Animals) Humane Awards Luncheon in New York City. The ceremony recognizes animal heroes who have demonstrated extraordinary efforts as well as individuals who have shown great commitment to animal welfare during the past year.Jonny Justice was one of 49 dogs rescued from unimaginable cruelty as part of the 2007 Bad Newz Kennels dog fighting investigation, which resulted in the conviction of NFL quarterback Michael Vick and others. A black and white pit bull, who had little or no positive interactions with people or other dogs, Jonny was given a second chance when he was adopted by his foster parents, Cris Cohen and Jennifer Long. As Jonny adjusted to life as a typical pet, it became clear that he loved interacting with children. In 2008 he found his true calling as a therapy dog, and these days spends much of his time offer-ing love and support to terminally ill children receiving medical treatment (and their families). The tale of Jonnys inspirational comeback from the horrors of dog fighting to work as a therapy dog has traveled far and wide, even inspiring a line of plush toys that extend his ability to touch children across the country.

Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Islands New Shelter is in Phase Two!

In 2013, ARLSRI launched a $2 million capital campaign to build a new 7,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art shelter on three-acres of donated land on Curtis Corner Road in Peace Dale. Thanks to the generous support of individuals, businesses and foundations, a weather-tight frame and exterior of the building were constructed in the fall of 2013, completing the $1 million Phase One target of their $2 million goal.

They are now in the next phase one that will deliver the necessary infrastructure, equipment, and furnishings to complete the shelter. The shelter will have sophisticated climate control to ensure the health of their animals, as well as radiant floor heat for warmth and comfort, among many other features that will benefit the animals in our care. Their goal is to complete the shelter by early spring of 2015, but they are in need of continued support and donations to reach that goal. If you would like more information or to help the cause, please visit www.arlsri.org.

  • 8Who is Stella and tell us why is she special?Stella is a 6 1/2 year-old boxer. She has been the shop dog at Flaunt Boutique since she was a puppy. Stella loves being around people! When she arrives at work, she greets all of her coworkers and friends working in the stores nearby, and then she relaxes on her couch for the day. She adores children and always accepts a compliment from customers, but knows enough not to bother them. Stella loves modeling the latest fashions from Flaunt, and is always ready for a photo-op! Why did Stella want to be on the cover?Stella loves helping her friends at Providence Animal Rescue League in any way she can. Stella was able to donate a large amount of funds to PARL, and in return, she got the opportunity to be on the cover of Animal Print!

Winner of the Providence Animal Rescue Leagues Live Auction at The Rescue

For the past few years, The Animal Print, along with internationally-recognized photographer Traer Scott, have joined forces to offer a very unique donation to the Providence Animal Rescue League. The winning bidder of their live auction at The Rescue wins the opportu-nity to be on our cover with their photo taken by Traer Scott; we are thrilled to be able to support PARL in this way! The Animal Print, Traer Scott, and PARL would like to give a big thank you to Amanda Doumato for her generous donation and to Stella for being such a big, sweet, and amazing model!

    Introducing Stella

What was Stellas favorite part about the photo shoot?Stella loved being in the park. She was curious about every noise, person and animal she saw or heard. The geese and swans in the pond startled her a little but she definitely wanted to find a way to play with them!

Holiday Hazards Plants* Certain plants such as Mistletoe berries, and the leaves, stem, and flowers of the Poinsettia can be dangerous to pets. Be sure to keep these plants well out of the reach of animals in your home, or consider using artificial versions.

Foods * Foods and drinks such as alcoholic beverages, seeds and pits from many fruits, chocolate, macadamia nuts, walnuts, coffee, tea, salt, onions, and other foods can be harmful to pets.* Never feed pets leftovers from the dinner table. Items such as chicken bones can easily shatter and choke cats and dogs.Fumes * When cooking dinner for your guests, be sure to move pet birds away from the kitchen area. Fumes released from non-stick cookware and self-cleaning ovens can be deadly.

Decorations * Decorations such as tinsel, glass ornaments, and garlands can easily attract pets, but are dangerous choking hazards. Electric decorations such as stringed lights can give your pets a shock should they chew on the wires. Keep decorations out of their reach.

Visitors * The unusual commotion of the holiday season can be stressful on animals as well as humans. Put your pets in a quiet room or quiet area of the house when guests are visiting.

Travel * When traveling with your pets, make sure they are properly secured and dont fly them in the cargo area on airplanes unless absolutely necessary.

For more information about what is poisonous to your pet, visit www.hsus.org.

With the holiday season just around the corner, the Animal Print would like to remind you of a few of the most common holiday hazards in an effort to keep your pets safe.

Antifreeze is a deadly poison! Unfortunately it has a sweet taste that may attract animals and children. Wipe up spills and store antifreeze (and all household chemicals) out of reach. Better yet, use antifreeze-coolant made with propylene glycol; if swallowed in small amounts, it will not hurt pets, wildlife, or your family.

before the paper trail was found just by looking at his dog. The dogs behavior prompted the owner to believe the dog knew she had done something wrong and felt bad for doing it.

One day, though, the owner left a pile of paper towels on the carpet while he was out of the room. When he returned, he

Im sure youre familiar with the Internet phe-nomenon of dog shaming: photographing your guilty-looking dog and the mess he made with a hand-lettered placard announcing what the crime is (I unrolled all the toilet paper in three bathrooms or I attacked the throw pillows on the sofa while you were at work or I peed in Nanas suitcase). While dog shaming can be very funny, it raises an important question: do dogs feel guilt?

The idea that dogs feel guilty about their behavior is fueled by owners observations that their dogs seem to act guilty when theyre caught doing bad things. In fact, 74% of pet owners believe their dogs experience guilt.

But its not that simple: assuming that your dog feels guilty because he looks guilty ignores important factors behind the cause and meaning of the dogs reaction none of which have anything to do with guilt.

That Guilty Look and What It MeansThe guilty dog look is seen in various contexts, many of which have nothing to do with bad behavior. A shelter dog afraid of a looming stranger approaching his cage may look guilty, as may a timid dog seeking to avoid an overly zealous canine at the dog park though neither of these dogs has done anything to feel guilty about.

In actuality, your dogs guilty look has more to do with ap-peasement, avoidance, and fear-based body language than with feelings of guilt. As a trainer, I pay careful attention to the guilty look when I am assessing a dogs emotional state, particularly if he seems to be stressed and anxious.

Why Do Dogs Act Guilty?I worked with a pet owner who told me his dog acted guilty whenever she chewed up paper items. The owner could con-sistently predict if a chewing incident had occurred even

saw a guilty-looking dog acting exactly as she did when she had chewed some-thing up. The owner had a revelation: the dog had not been showing guilt for past paper shredding incidents in-stead, she had learned that whenever there was paper on the floor, her owner would be upset when he entered the room. In other words, she was reacting to the humans behavior, not exhibiting any internal sense of wrongdoing.

Your dog can learn that in certain situ-ations you become upset with him. But he may not connect his behavior with your reaction especially if the inci-dent you are reacting to happened long before you discovered it (a roll of toilet paper shredded hours before you came home from work, for example). Instead, the situation shredded paper on the floor indicates a high likelihood of being scolded. But though your dog may associate the mess hes made with getting yelled at, this does not mean that he will learn not to chew up the toilet paper because of your reaction, or even realize that chewing things that are not his toys is wrong.

Even though guilty body language is not necessarily indicative of guilt, the big question still remains: can dogs feel guilty? Though we cannot say for sure, we do know that the satisfaction of getting a dog to feel bad enough to give the guilty look for making a poor choice does little to help the dog or teach him to behave better in the future.

Cartoon animals may drum up hilarious antics, but millions of real-life cats and dogs have learned to love (or at least respect) one another. Perhaps thats why millions of pet owners feel their house isnt complete until theyve added a puppy and a feline to the family. Its easy, as long as you stick to a few steps.

Under no circumstances should you let them work out things on their own. That method is far too stressful, even in the best of circumstances. Its important to keep in mind that introductions can be dangerous, especially for the cat. Some dogs see cats as prey, and even those who are generally easy-going may react instinctively to a feline on the run.

Introductions must be supervised and handled with planning, care, and patience. If you have a cat and are going to bring in a dog, try to find an animal that is familiar with cats. Shelters,

rescue groups or private parties looking to place puppies and dogs often know whether an animal has successfully lived with one.

If you have a dog and are planning to bring in a cat, start working on Fidos obedience before you add the new animal. Your dog should be comfortable on a leash and trained to mind your requests for him to stay in either a sit or down position while on that leash.

For the cats comfort, he should be confined to a small area during the early stages of introductions. A second bathroom or guest bedroom will offer the cat a safe space while accli-mating to the dogs sounds and smells. Be sure the room has everything he needs (including food and water bowls and a litterbox) and that he has frequent one-on-one visits with human members of the family.

Sweet LoganIs looking for love and a forever home

Logan is an extremely sweet boy who is in need of a home that will love him as much as he loves everyone and everything he meets. He is about 1-2 years old and we think he is a shepherd/hound mix. At 45 lbs he is the perfect size to cuddle. He loves people and that includes children who enjoy an exuber-ant dog. Hes also great with other dogs and enjoys his time at the dog park. Sweet Logan was found in Yazoo County, MS in a dump and given a second chance, which he truly deserves. Yazoo means death in Choctaw and had he not been saved, that most certainly would have been his fate. Because hes been on his own for a bit and most likely abandoned by his family he seems to crave attention. He lives to be cuddled and held in a way that almost breaks your heart. He will need some training to learn not to jump

and would do well with someone active. However, what he lacks in training, he makes up for in eagerness to please! Because hes still unsure how to get treats and petting, he will often sprawl out on his back just waiting for whats next. It may be the most adorable thing weve ever seen! Logan is also wonder-ful in his crate and will happily run into it for his meals, a toy or whatever fun item awaits. His foster mom has put him on a bathroom schedule and reports that he has been d oing great with house training when on this schedule. This young boy has so much to offer someone and will make an amazing dog for the lucky person who adopts him. For more info, contact his foster mom at [email protected]. To fill out an application and meet him, visit his page at www.fohari.org.

After the cat has been sequestered for a few days, you can begin the introductions. Put the dog on leash and open the door to the room. Allow the animals to see one another, but do not let the dog chase the cat, even in play. Use sit-stay or down-stay to keep the dog in place while the cat gets used to his presence. Dont force the cat to interact with the dog; if the cat wishes to watch him from the darkest recesses of the bed, so be it. Reward both animals with treats and praise.

Keep the dog on leash for a couple of weeks in the cats pres-ence. You should always make sure the cat has a way to escape from the dog baby gates are especially effective. Build up the time the animals spend together, and continue to make the introductions rewarding with more treats and praise.

When can you take off the leash and let the two begin their lives together? When the dog isnt interested in bothering the cat and the cat feels secure enough to come out from under the bed. How long it will take to get to this step will depend on the animals involved, and you must work at their pace.

Its not uncommon for dogs and cats to become friends and to enjoy each others company. Take the time to manage the introduction properly, and you could be setting up a friend-ship that will last for the rest of your pets lives.

{Wandering Tails} by Mike FinkJames Bowen was doing his busking --that is, playing his guitar for a few quid on the streets of London--and roughing it after losing the best years of his still-young life to heroin and alcohol. He came across a cat with a wounded, infected paw and a patchy ginger fur, and took him in.The full account in 310 at-tractively illustrated pages came out a season or so ago. I picked up a paper-back edition published by Thomas Dunne books/St. Martins Griffin at Books on the Square, took it home,

and read it cover to cover. The subtitle, and the summary, claims, And How He Saved My Life! This is the story of a sprightly pet that brings out the protective instinct of a lost soul who likewise needs protection---from himself, and Bob the street cat gives as good as he gets---love, loyalty, and a sense of belonging. Some of the charm of the tale comes from the cockney slang of the authors voice. Some of the appeal derives from the scenes set in the vets office, where the neutering operation is performed, described with frank fidelity and also sympathy and balance. As in so much English storytelling, on screen as well as print, the emphasis is on friendship itself, its healing power and its magical gifts. The life of a drifter, a busker, is not an easy one. Some people insult you, mock or snub you and others come through with gener-osity and genuine kindness. Bob the stray trusts James his rescuer and enjoys perching on his shoulders, which endears him to many and earns more coins than had been dreamed of by James prior philosophy. Now, they can both eat better and sleep together in peace and security. Yes, this book brings you into a world that most of us avoid think-ing about. Neglected children who vanish into the void when families break up or move from place to place....almost like a pet that is abandoned or cast off from one familiar household to another until the alleys claim them. Thats what fellow and feline share as they bond and build a better life ---but not without dilem-mas and doubts. This reviewer has pursued a number of narratives about unusual cats and written a few as well. A Street Cat Named Bob also ex-ists on YouTube and Facebook, but its really a nice little volume to carry out and consider at your own pace. Its a little repetitive and not perfectly proofed, but it holds your interest all the same. How does Bob cure Jims ills? Just by following him around, looking at him expressively and expectantly. There were many passages I could identify with and it confirmed my respect for British taste since the writer has received recognition and respect, and found his niche and his nest of comfort all due to the affection of a fine-looking tom. Who could ask for anything more? Its my theme in life: be kind to animals, theyre angels bearing a message of hope!

Make It Merrier With One More: Foster A Lonely Pet For theThis holiday season, both Petfinder and The Animal Print magazine are asking you to open your heart and home to a pet from a shelter or rescue group. Fostering a pet, whether it is a cat, dog, or small animal, grants these animals a cozy, if temporary, home. Although many shelters and animal rescue organizations celebrate the holidays with special treats for their residents, funds and space are always limited. Many local rescue orga-nizations rely on foster families to house their pets while they find an adopter, and these organizations need help more than

ever during this bustling season. Families who foster pets make a new friend, experi-ence pets unconditional love, provide a place for Santa Paws to visit (wink wink), and often save a life by opening their home for a few weeks or even days. Children who put a new pet on their wish list can practice the responsibilities that come with a pup, kitten, hamster, or whoever with a foster friend. Court Rules That Pawtucket Cant

Ban Pit Bulls! A Rhode Island Superior Court judge has

struck down Pawtuckets ban on pit bull own-ership. Judge Brian Van Couyghen recently issued an oral decision in a case brought by Defenders of Animals and a pit bull owner.

The organization argued that Pawtucket could no longer enforce an ordinance that prevents Pawtucket residents from owning pit bulls. The Valley Breeze and NBC10 reported that city lawyers argued that the state law was not retroactive and didnt apply to the citys ban.

Meet Eva!! Eva is a 5 mo old , Weimaraner mix. Eva is a sweet and active puppy that loves to run and play and to give kisses! Eva is looking for an active family that has the time to give her the love and guidance that all puppies need to be the amazing dog they can be!

Meet Padma, a wonderful, approximately 7 year old yellow female lab/corgi mix. Padma weighs 41 lbs. and is a little overweight, however that doesnt bother her one bit. Padma is a sweet, friendly girl and gets her exercise by chasing balls and toys. She walks well on her leash, is housebroken, crate trained and rides quietly in the car.

Beauty is 5-6 mo border collie/ lab puppy. She has a great temperament. Very sweet. Mom was a purebred border collie, dad was a lab mix Beauty has a soft wavy coat and cute little bob tail. She loves to play with other dogs. During the day when were home or anyone is home she wanders through the house with no problem.

Emmie is a 3y, who weighs in at a healthy (aka is on a diet) 64lbs. She is a very sweet and sometimes shy girl who would prefer to live where she can hog all the attention for herself as a singleton or with another well adjusted dog. Emmie is 100% crate-trained and house trained. Pretty low-key dog for a hound though.

Animal Rescue League of Southern RI 506 B Curtis Corner Rd., South Kingstown, RI

Horton: I am very shy, mostly because I am nervous right now, but I can be really sweet! I am very sad and confused at the shelter, and while I like to hide quietly in my little bed, what I really would like is a place to call home once again. Fear not, I truly am a sweetheart, just shy around all the other cats and strangers in the shelter.

Hi, my name is Brody. What can I say? I am a playful yet shy cat who really misses being in a home. I would really like a new home, a place where I can be loved and return the favor without other animals making me ner-vous. I like to nuzzle and get head scratches, all I ask is that you give me a little time to adapt and get comfortable once again.

Nancy is a petite black cat who wants to bring you good luck. Id rather be with friendly human companions as opposed to other cats. Have no fear, I keep my living space very neat and clean, you wont have to worry about me making a mess. Youll fall for my sweet little voice which matches my demeanor.

Maggie: I am a silly and adorable female cat who is ready to settle into a forever home. I will tell you stories of my day if youd like and I am all ears and ready to listen about your day as well. As with most cats, I like routine and I would love to adopt a new daily rou-tine with you and your family forever. Age: 6 yrs old.

Henry is a 9 month old Whippet/Labrador Retriever Mix. He loves to be with his people, curled up next to you on the couch. He rarely barks, is doing extremely well with house training. He is crate trained and will go in on his own at night. But if you let him, hell happily sleep next to you with his head on your pillow.

Bandito: Im drop dead gorgeous, outgoing and lovable. Im also quite a character, very smart and a quick learn! I love playing with other dogs, running around, going on long runs/walks, chewing my bones, running and playing some more and cuddling. I have lots of energy to burn and love stimulation and activity.

Barbara is a wonderfully smart, obedient little 10 yr old lady. She likes nothing more than to sit next to you or sleep under the covers at night with you. She is low energy. She is housebroken but does need to go out several times a day. While she does not like to be crated there is no need to be as she is fine when left alone.

Logan is a young sheph/hound mix. This ex-tremely sweet boy is about 1-2 years old and we think he is a shepherd/hound mix. Hes about 45lbs. He loves people and was gen-tle with the child he met. Good with other dogs but not cat tested and doing great with housetraining He was found in Yazoo County, MS in a dump and given a second chance.

Talk about a cutie-pa-tootie Jax tops the cute-o-meter for sure! Winter is coming and he is the perfect cuddler to add to your life! He is low key and is guaranteed to melt you heart! Just consider him a brindle blanket of love! So stop by and look for the squishy boy and fall in love! He is about 5 years old and ready to be a part of your family!

Mildred arrived to us after a good Samari-tan found her walking down the road. She had tumors that were almost the size of her, yet all she wanted to do was snuggle. Her tumors did come back as a form of cancer, but she is a fighter and is determined to live out the rest of her life as the diva dog she is.

Buddy is a 3 1/2 year old lab chow mix. The Chow in him brings affection and devotion to family, while being reserved and discern-ing with strangers. He does not chew on the furniture or jump on sofas and only does his business outdoors. Buddy can do tricks, and learns them quite easily.

Can you imagine living life at the end of a 3 foot chain tethered to a dog house? Well that is exactly the life Hudson had...but no more!! He is about 4 years old and he is one of this classy hybrids we call a pound which is a Pittie Hound mix. Hudson has never had the pleasure of sleeping in a warm bed sur-rounded by family.

    Save One Soul www.sosarl.org

This fun-loving little boy is Butch, a sweet mix of mini schnauzer, lab and terrier puppy. A happy fellow that loves to play and be held, Butch is more submissive than his litter mates, though a good wrestling match is not out of the question. He is currently working on crate training. He will need to be house trained and taught good doggie manners.

Hi my name is Blondie! I am a Shepherd mix puppy and a very sweet girl. I love to play with other dogs and I also like to snuggle on the couch with my humans. I will do my business outside if you take me out there on a regular schedule. I sleep perfectly fine in my crate at night and love to go on walks around my neighborhood.

We dont have much history on Shooby Doo or his brothers other than they were brought in to the shelter by a guy who bragged about how he kicked them in to the kennel because they were so scared. Shooby Doo has been impacted the most by this nasty human behavior. Shooby s brother have both been adopted - now its his turn.

Lulu has it all. She is a quick learner and is eager to please, in just a matter of days she mastered: sit, down, come, and shake paw. She is housetrained and crate trained. She will sleep quietly in her crate until you go get her, but knowing Lulu and how she loves her people, she would love to snooze in bed with you. Lulu loves all dogs of all ages and sizes.

Nuffy was a stray who gravitated to our house almost 10 years ago. Every

night when I pulled into my driveway, he would hop onto the hood of my

cat and stare at me through the windshield -- telling me I was late with

his dinner. He was a large male tuxedo (black and white) who had what I

call a Frank Sinatra attitude - he was always going to do things his way.

As soon as I had a cat door installed in the kitchen, he came in, found a

comfy spot and our house became his. He never had a problem with our

other cats or dog -- he knew he was the boss. We will miss your cattitude

and your little pink nose, Nuffy.
