the entire Wodehouse catalog, in handsome hard-covers with festive dust jackets, at $20 a pop.I bought a bunch of them, partly because my oldcopies are, if not actually defunct, a long way frombeing funct. I also indulged because Overlook has broughtback the non-Jeeves goods, including the seriesabout Blandings Castle, Clarence, Lord Emsworth,and his prize pig, Empress of Blandings.

And there are several stand-alone stories TheSmall Bachelor, Cocktail Time, and Sam theSudden all populated by the usual Wodehou-sian cast of cash-strapped aristocrats, amiableeccentrics, and young women, generally agreed tobe full of oomph. Wodehouse was a master of his craft, which iswhy I can read the same Jeeves story for the 50thtime and find something new to laugh at.

On the other hand, you might find yourself inthe mood for Japanese gangster movies from the1950s and 1960s. (It happens.) The DVD reissue world has caught up with direc-tor Seijun Suzuki, who has made some of the mostentertaining and some of the oddest filmsever foisted upon an unsuspecting public. Suzuki was a director for the Nikkatsu studio,and he churned out 40 flicks between 1956 and1967. The famous one is 1967s Branded to Kill,which got the director fired, and is the only dra-matic enterprise in history that features the eroti-cism inherent in the smell of boiled rice. (Andnow you know why the man was fired.) But where you really want to start is with 1959sTake Aim at the Police Van, where Suzuki re-ally starts blending the film noir, the French New

Wave, and the conventions of the Japanese yakuza (gang-ster) flick into something new. Police Van is part of a five-disc set from Eclipse, Nik-katsu Noir, with four other films from the same late 50sto early 60s period. They are all edgy, poised on the brinkof weirdness, and unlike anything youve ever seen.

By the time you are reading this it is probably a littlelate to go fishing, unless you want to catch a chunk of ice. I have two suggestions, however, aimed at the house-bound angler: Peter Hayes Fly Fishing Outside the Box:Emerging Heresies and the Wet Fly Ways DVD fromDavy Wotton. My very traditional familys thoughts onholiday gift-giving (for adults) are prettyradical this year. We decided to pare it way

back to small tokens, or nothing, and save for some-thing really special. Its not that we dont often plan a day trip to New YorkCity, say, or something similar. But we are simply put-ting all of our efforts into making a great memory. Re-moved from the equation is the weariness of shopping

and gift-wrapping. Added in is a little extra cash to feelfree about spending. We are in flux, with the youngest in the immediatefamily now 18, a couple of kids in college and another ahalf a world away and starting his own family. The big-gest stress factor for our holidays could easily be thatwe wont all be together, so changing it up may be theanswer. Our situation is certainly not unusual. It is more and

more the norm, these days, for families to be far-flung.That makes planning holiday get-togethers these daysmuch more complicated than planning a meal. Travelis a big component, which is why destination vacationsare quickly becoming a popular option. If numerous family members have to travel, maybethe best idea is to meet somewhere in the middle, ata place youve always wanted to visit or simply some-where to relax and spend some time together. There are essentially two ways to go with this. Beingflexible is key. Dream together about where you wantto go, but look first to finances and schedules. It may betoo late to do anything elaborate for this year, but while

youre connecting at family gatherings, this could bethe perfect opportunity to get the ball rolling for next

year. Travel agents are few and far between these days.Much can be done online. But if you call the number

She has been-there-done-that and can offer sound adviceand good reasons to consider not trying to make all the ar-rangements on your own. Try calling an online ticket provider when youre stuck inthe airport and your flight is canceled, she said. There areso many ways for things to go wrong, and thats when allthat saving will end up costing a lot more.

For starters, agents get the latest word on matters thatcould affect a trip, such as airline strikes. Pajarola said shegets lists of booked passengers whose flights are in jeop-ardy. She also knows things that can trip travelers up suchas the fact that some countries will not honor passports thatare due to expire within six months.

Her top recommendation for family traveling conve-nience, value and enjoyment: cruises. If you dont want to have to think about any of it, a cruiseis the way to go. They are all inclusive so you dont have toeven think about where you are going to eat. You alwaysknow where family members are, yet people can go off anddo different things as they like. Pajarola saidthat it is not as cost-prohibitive as people may think and sug-gests they ask for a quote, then weigh it against the benefits. Theres no need to get to the airport three hours early forcheck-in. No one even touches you. You know who you are sit-ting next to and if you have six to eight people, it can be cheap-er than flying commercial first-class.

For some other ideas on destinations, Travel and Leisure Mag-azine has recommendations based on the desired experience. For very traditional, religious celebrations, go to San Miguelde Allende in New Mexico, to embrace the season without thechill, or seek snow and old-world charm in Quebec City. Hik-ing the rainforest, whale-watching and barbecues in Kaikourain New Zealand, where the holidays fall during the height ofsummer. Thats recommended for those who want a completedeparture.

The prices tend to be a

little higher than your average

greeting card at a Hallmarkstore, Barrett said, but I thinkthat the handcrafted qualityand care that is put into theproduct is evident. Its thatextra attention to detail thatreally appeals to some people. Clearly the appeal exists, asLucky Duck Press has been

Its a totally flexible roomand we can change it depend-ing on what kind of event itis, Moviehouse owner CarolSadlon said. Its just reallyflexible and we like to workwith the needs of the personwho wants to do the party.

The screening roomhas seen everything fromlectures to bachelor par-

ties to private screeningsof independent movies.

There was even a weddingproposal planned there.

I think its really wonderfulthat we have the opportunity

to do this, Sadlon said, add-ing that people used to ap-proach her and her husband,

Robert, about renting outtheir theater. However, thepair was unable to shut downtheir theaters, which showfirst-run movies as well aslive performances of the op-era, ballet and other theater.

Now, Sadlon said, theresa way to rent space andrun shows, and peoplereally enjoy that.

Its been three years sincethe screening room was cre-ated, and its always beenavailable for private events,but now the Sadlons wantto spread the word that theroom can be customized.

We can do office parties

or formal parties, childrensparties with balloons andcookies we have variouspackages, Sadlon said.
