This collection has been assembled in a very ad hocmanner mostly hand-me-down hardcovers from the1930s, with loose bindings and cryptic, penciled nota-tions from long-gone relatives, and dog-eared paper-backs from the 1970s, showing signs of being dropped

in the bathtub at some point (try that with yourKindle). Recently the Overlook Press has reissued almost

the entire Wodehouse catalog, in handsome hard-covers with festive dust jackets, at $20 a pop.I bought a bunch of them, partly because my oldcopies are, if not actually defunct, a long way frombeing funct. I also indulged because Overlook has broughtback the non-Jeeves goods, including the seriesabout Blandings Castle, Clarence, Lord Emsworth, and his prize pig, Empress of Blandings.

And there are several stand-alone stories TheSmall Bachelor, Cocktail Time, and Sam theSudden all populated by the usual Wodehou-sian cast of cash-strapped aristocrats, amiableeccentrics, and young women, generally agreed tobe full of oomph. Wodehouse was a master of his craft, which iswhy I can read the same Jeeves story for the 50thtime and find something new to laugh at.

On the other hand, you might find yourself inthe mood for Japanese gangster movies from the1950s and 1960s. (It happens.) The DVD reissue world has caught up with direc-tor Seijun Suzuki, who has made some of the mostentertaining and some of the oddest filmsever foisted upon an unsuspecting public. Suzuki was a director for the Nikkatsu studio, and he churned out 40 flicks between 1956 and1967. The famous one is 1967s Branded to Kill, which got the director fired, and is the only dra-matic enterprise in history that features the eroti-cism inherent in the smell of boiled rice. (Andnow you know why the man was fired.) But where you really want to start is with 1959sTake Aim at the Police Van, where Suzuki re-ally starts blending the film noir, the French New

Police Van is part of a five-disc set from Eclipse, Nik-katsu Noir, with four other films from the same late 50sto early 60s period. They are all edgy, poised on the brinkof weirdness, and unlike anything youve ever seen.

By the time you are reading this it is probably a littlelate to go fishing, unless you want to catch a chunk of ice. I have two suggestions, however, aimed at the house-bound angler: Peter Hayes Fly Fishing Outside the Box:Emerging Heresies and the Wet Fly Ways DVD fromDavy Wotton. Hayes book is a serious chunk of learning and opinionthat just arrived. A quick glance found two splendidly

8 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE, November 2014

My very traditional familys thoughts onholiday gift-giving (for adults) are prettyradical this year. We decided to pare it way

back to small tokens, or nothing, and save for some-thing really special. Its not that we dont often plan a day trip to New YorkCity, say, or something similar. But we are simply put-ting all of our efforts into making a great memory. Re-moved from the equation is the weariness of shopping

and gift-wrapping. Added in is a little extra cash to feelfree about spending. We are in flux, with the youngest in the immediatefamily now 18, a couple of kids in college and another ahalf a world away and starting his own family. The big-gest stress factor for our holidays could easily be thatwe wont all be together, so changing it up may be theanswer. Our situation is certainly not unusual. It is more and

more the norm, these days, for families to be far-flung.That makes planning holiday get-togethers these daysmuch more complicated than planning a meal. Travelis a big component, which is why destination vacationsare quickly becoming a popular option. If numerous family members have to travel, maybethe best idea is to meet somewhere in the middle, ata place youve always wanted to visit or simply some-where to relax and spend some time together. There are essentially two ways to go with this. Beingflexible is key. Dream together about where you wantto go, but look first to finances and schedules. It may betoo late to do anything elaborate for this year, but while

youre connecting at family gatherings, this could bethe perfect opportunity to get the ball rolling for next

year. Travel agents are few and far between these days.Much can be done online. But if you call the number

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE, November 2014 9

for the former Clock Tower Travel in Sharon, you will getBirgitt Pajarola, now a travel advisor with Protravel Interna-tional. Pajarola said holiday travel is definitely on the upswing, with families turning to online agencies like hers for alllevels of travel assistance. She has been-there-done-that and can offer sound adviceand good reasons to consider not trying to make all the ar-rangements on your own. Try calling an online ticket provider when youre stuck inthe airport and your flight is canceled, she said. There areso many ways for things to go wrong, and thats when allthat saving will end up costing a lot more.

For starters, agents get the latest word on matters thatcould affect a trip, such as airline strikes. Pajarola said shegets lists of booked passengers whose flights are in jeop-ardy. She also knows things that can trip travelers up suchas the fact that some countries will not honor passports thatare due to expire within six months.

If money is not the first consideration, go ahead and planto open gifts gathered around a fire in a ski chalet or aftera swim at the beach. Just know that prices are seasonal. If

smack dab during the holidays is the only extended timepeople can get away, then either bite the bullet and go forthe inflated cost, or look for options, such as house trading,to save. Otherwise, consider postponing the celebration until afterthe new year. Prices for everything from airline tickets tohotels plummet by mid-January. Search online for rentalsthat may not be offered during the winter, and ask aboutthem anyway. Most vacation rentals are designed for maxi-

mum sleeping capacity, and kids dont usually mind sleep-ing bags on the floor. Splitting the cost many ways andeating most meals in-house are big cost-savers. Also look for bed & breakfast opportunities in smalltowns. Plan ahead and seek deals on renting an entire inn. That could include meals served family style using a menuof your favorites. Pajarola will do rentals on a limited basis, usually for vil-las and such as part of complete trip planning.

Her top recommendation for family traveling conve-nience, value and enjoyment: cruises. If you dont want to have to think about any of it, a cruiseis the way to go. They are all inclusive so you dont have toeven think about where you are going to eat. You alwaysknow where family members are, yet people can go off anddo different things as they like. You can get a good deal, even last minute. Continued to page 10

Among the benefits are booking airfares through the cruiseline. If weather or anything else delays you getting to the ships

departure, it is the cruise companys responsibility to work itout; even getting you to the next destination to board. The latest travel trend is chartering a private jet. Pajarola saidthat it is not as cost-prohibitive as people may think and sug-gests they ask for a quote, then weigh it against the benefits. Theres no need to get to the airport three hours early forcheck-in. No one even touches you. You know who you are sit-ting next to and if you have six to eight people, it can be cheap-er than flying commercial first-class.

For some other ideas on destinations, Travel and Leisure Mag-azine has recommendations based on the desired experience. For very traditional, religious celebrations, go to San Miguelde Allende in New Mexico, to embrace the season without thechill, or seek snow and old-world charm in Quebec City. Hik-ing the rainforest, whale-watching and barbecues in Kaikourain New Zealand, where the holidays fall during the height ofsummer. Thats recommended for those who want a completedeparture.

The wearer can hike up the hill or mountainwith the ski on and then ski down the mountain. This is pos-sible because of a unique skin that covers part of the skis un-derside. This skin feels rough to the touch from one directionto provide the grip needed for hiking, but smooth from theother direction to enable the sliding on the snow of downhillor cross-country skiing.

Another feature of the Hok that sets it apart fromother skis is that the bindings do not require thoseclunky ski boots; they will work with any wintersnow boot.

Morsel Munk encourages customers to rent theskis and other larger specialty products like them

because, as Scott put it, We like people to try beforethey buy, to know that they are a good fit with theproduct.

Also, if the customer rents and then decides topurchase, the rental fee is put toward the cost ofbuying the product.

Morsel Munk offers a large selection of gamesand toys, as well as outdoor gear. When describ-ing one example, the Popper line of toys from Hog

Wild, Brigitte said kids love them. The Poppers arerubber animals that, when squeezed, pop and shootsmall foam balls from their mouths at a stickytarget. There are also key chain Poppers that havestrings attached to the balls so they never roll away.

A gift idea for the wine-lover on your list is theDont Break the Bottle wooden wine bottle puzzlefrom Family Games. Instead of just handing overa bottle of wine as a gift, this wooden puzzle forces

the recipient to earn that bottle. It is a brain-teasingpuzzle that must first be solved before the bottle ofwine can be accessed. To help make the process eas-ier, someone intending to give a bottle locked in thepuzzle as a gift can bring the wine into the store andan employee can set up the brainteaser, so they donot need to worry about figuring it out themselves.

Unique, fun gifts for kids of all ages can be foundat Morsel Munk. Other than the Altai backcountryskis, Hog Wild Poppers, and Dont Break the Bottlebrain teaser, shoppers can find a diverse selectionof apparel, stand-up paddleboards, camping gear, games, toys, puzzles, and more.p

When it comes to gift giving, therehas been a surge in popularity for hand-made, one-of-a-kind gifts. In the advent of

websites like Etsy and ArtFire, shoppers often turn to

the Internet as a means of buying unique gifts and holi-

day items. But many of the same items on your holiday

list can be found in your own neighborhood, directly

    from local artisans and craftsmen.

Greeting cards are a staple of the holidays, and are

stores. But for a unique holi-day card, look no further than

Winsteds Lucky Duck Press.Located in the Sterling NameTape Company building on

Willow Street, Lucky DuckPress is owned and operatedby Patrick Barrett, a letterpressprinter who creates customstationery, business cards, wed-ding invitations and holidaycards on machinery that ismore than 100 years old.

The equipment I use wasmy great-grandfathers, whofounded The Sterling Press in

    Winsted in 1901, Barrett told

Continued from page 13 me. The presses are not auto-mated or motorized. Theyrefoot powered and fed eachsheet one at a time. And if theproject features multiple col-ors, each color requires anoth-er pass through the press.

As Barrett explained, a three-color holiday card would needto go through the press fourseparate times: once for eachcolor and a fourth time toscore it for folding. Multiplythat by an order for one hun-dred cards, and its easy to seethe amount of labor and detailput into the product.

The prices tend to be a

    little higher than your average

greeting card at a Hallmarkstore, Barrett said, but I thinkthat the handcrafted qualityand care that is put into theproduct is evident. Its thatextra attention to detail thatreally appeals to some people. Clearly the appeal exists, asLucky Duck Press has been

featured in Marie Claire andYankee magazines, and hasbeen nominated twice for Mar-tha Stewart Livings AmericanMade Audience Choice Award. Winsted is fortunate in hav-ing many artists and craftspeo-ple, some operating indepen-dently and others gathered

    together in places like The

Whiting Mills. Located at 100Whiting Street in Winsted,Whiting Mills is a collection ofshops and studios that is hometo several artists, photogra-phers, and woodworkers, aswell as a quilting store and aminiature-train hobby shop.

One of the newest membersof Whiting Mills, artist KikiMichalek, creates unique giftsthat feature original and cus-tom-made artwork.

Heres the idea: Theres a theory that one reason so manypeople cant cope with gluten these days is that theres toomuch of it. Ill spare you the boring details (if you want the

boring details, go to www.tricornernews.com and search formy 2012 article, Wheat is not the enemy, gluten is). Theshort version of the story is that the bread you buy fromthe grocery store is probably made with flour that has beenbleached and bromided and enhanced with a super-glutenproduct called Vital Wheat. None of these will kill you, in moderation, but since

they are in so many commer-cially produced products thatwe now eat, they have a cumu-latively negative effect on yourbody. The worst is Vital Wheat, which is not so horrible if you

just have it once in a while butwhich, in large amounts, gumsup your system. Its sticky andhard to digest. Eventually, somuch of it builds up in yourbody that you just cant eatany more of it without feel-ing lousy aka, you become

    gluten intolerant.

Those of us who haventreached that point yet shouldmaybe take heed and eat fewerproducts enriched with Vital

Wheat. How will you knowwhich breads have it? I wouldbe suspicious of any bread thathas a scannable barcode. Thosebreads probably are also madewith bleached flour. Whatswrong with that? The bleaching process, hesaid, destroys the nutrientsand doesnt serve any purposein the baking.

    Youll never see bleached

flour in this shop, he added, referring to the kitchen onMain Street in Salisbury wherehe makes cookies, croissants, lemon squares and tons ofother really succulent stuff including and especiallybreads made with high-qualityflour ground from hard winter

wheat, which has the most pro-

tein and natural gluten (andtherefore doesnt need to beenriched with Vital Wheat). The breads he makes and sellsat Salisbury Breads arent inex-pensive.

They range in price from$3.50 for a baguette to $8 or$9 for the denser loaves, such

as the miche breads and theround and oval loaves filledwith dried fruits and nuts (thestores Holiday Bread, whichshould be available by now, isa rye made with toasted pecansand dried cherries; it will sellfor about $8.50).

In the mid price range is a

    wondrous variety of round and

oval and twisted loaves thatare white, multi-grain, semo-lina, brioche. Our bread is made in the tra-ditional French levain process,

Young said, which means thatit rises and is punched downand rises again and the yeast islively and hungry.

This is bread thats healthierand easier to digest. Its fer-mented, so its almost predi-gested. You are, you see, giving awonderful gift to your bodywhen you spend that extra bitof bread/dough/money to getbread made the old-fashioned

way. And once you accept the

idea of bread as a gift, well, itsnot a very long walk to think-ing of it as a wonderful holi-day-time hostess gift. For $8 or$9 you would get a fairly poorquality wine. For that sameprice, you would get a trulysuperior loaf of bread.

    For this years Gift Guide

article, Ive compiled a list ofbakeries in the immediate areathat make wonderful bread.

While youre there, considerbuying some local cheeses andfresh jams, or other yummythings that go with bread. p

Its the holidays, atimewhen people like to gettogether and be convivial.

Parties are always popular, but sometimes one wants todo things a little differently.Thats when its time to thinkoutside the box and considergiving a party in Millerton,NY, at The Moviehousesprivate screening room.

Its a totally flexible roomand we can change it depend-ing on what kind of event itis, Moviehouse owner CarolSadlon said. Its just reallyflexible and we like to workwith the needs of the personwho wants to do the party.

The screening roomhas seen everything fromlectures to bachelor par-

ties to private screeningsof independent movies.

There was even a weddingproposal planned there.

I think its really wonderfulthat we have the opportunity

to do this, Sadlon said, add-ing that people used to ap-proach her and her husband,

Robert, about renting outtheir theater. However, thepair was unable to shut downtheir theaters, which showfirst-run movies as well aslive performances of the op-era, ballet and other theater.

Now, Sadlon said, theresa way to rent space andrun shows, and peoplereally enjoy that.

Its been three years sincethe screening room was cre-ated, and its always beenavailable for private events, but now the Sadlons wantto spread the word that theroom can be customized.

    We can do office parties

or formal parties, childrensparties with balloons andcookies we have variouspackages, Sadlon said.

The dark hoursin Millerton get a lotbrighter around theholidays because ofTownscape, an organi-zation devoted to thebetterment of the town.

    Each year for the

holiday season, thegroup assembles volun-teers to dress the vil-lage with lights to giveit some festive cheer.

So I walked downMain Street to chat withTownscape volunteers.

And heres whatthey had to say.

    We need joy, we

need people to be happyafter everything thatgoes on in the world,Art Peters said outsideThe Moviehouse.

Decorating withPeters was Town-scape board mem-

ber Jenn Najdek.Im tenth genera-tion; I like doing this formy village, she said.

Across from Saper-steins, anotherduo strung lightsaround a tree.

Its our town andwere all very proudof it, board mem-

ber Alexis Englandsaid. It is a gift oflights. It really is.

Millerton is a beau-tiful lady and needsto dazzle for the holi-days, added volun-teer Linda Chase.

Next stop, outsideOblong Books &Music, a pair of Les-lies followed suit.

Leslie Hastings vol-unteered in anticipa-tion of the finishedproducts elegant glow.Unlike years before, allthe lights are white.

    We love Miller-

ton and we want itto look beautiful, in-spired by the whitelights, she said.

Board member LeslieFarhangi, too, expressedaffection for her town.

    I love Millerton

and I want to do whatI can for the town andvillage, she said. Ilove living here.

Townscape PresidentJeanne Vanecko stoppedby the Leslies workingat various stations.

Townscapes pri-mary purpose is tohelp build a sense of

    community, she said.Decorating draws

    the community to-gether, she added.

Down at the HarlemValley Rail Trail en-trance, Treasurer RobKuhbach and board

member Chris Kennanplaced final decora-tions around the Iron-dale Schoolhouse.

Kuhbach echoedthe sentiments of hisfellow decorators.

Its important to giveback to the communityand make it pretty forthe holiday season.
