What is an appliance?
§ Appliance may refer to a device with a narrow function…
– Home appliance, household machines, using electricity or some other energy input …
– Computer appliance, a computing device with a specific function and limited configuration ability
• A computer appliance is generally a separate and discrete hardware component specifically designed to provide a specific computing resource, and which often resides on a dedicated hardware platform
• These devices became known as "appliances" because of their similarity to home appliances, which are generally "closedand sealed" – not serviceable by the owner. In computer appliances the hardware is also usually sealed and not repairable or upgradeable by the user

From Computing appliances to Cloud appliances …
§ Computing appliance– Single purpose IT system– Designed for a specific purpose, closed architecture– Combination of hardware, operating system, and application– Popular for networking tasks (router, firewall, VPN, …)
and storage (NAS, …)– Main attributes … simple, reliable, easy to use
§ Cloud appliance– Purpose is to provide cloud features ‘out of the box’
• Self-service user interface• Provide IT resources, elastic in size and time,
using automation and virtualization– Mainly targets private clouds
• Expanding into also addressing the public cloud space

Value proposition of cloud appliances
§ Typical cloud system consists of various components which need to be installed and configured
§ The average lead time to get a new cloud system up and running is 4-6 weeks
– Approvals, procurement, shipment, HW installation, license procurement, OS installation, application installation, configuration, …
§ Error prone process introducing delays in setup
– 30% of bugs are introduced by inconsistent configurations
– These bugs are often of the most difficult variety to detect
§ What admin & management efficiencies can be made to earn significant cost savings?
§ Drastically reduce set up and configuration time§ Standard configurations
enable “zero-touch” process, providing quick access§ Simplify maintenance and management§ Elimination of manual task management,
reducing time to deliver § Improved time to market§ Reduced ‚Time to Value‘ cost risk
due to priced packages
