L.A. Community Embraces the Switch to Reusable Grocery BagsDECEMBER 2 6 , 2 01 3 BY HOLDENBA GS LEA V E A COMMENT
It is safe to say that residents across Los Angeles seem to be enthusiastic about the plastic bag bang that is soon going into effect. In fact, reports of
enthusiasm and collaboration are widespread as the largest U.S. city to ban plastic bags makes the switch to eco-friendly reusable grocery bags
.
The L.A. Times recently reported the city is teaming up with nonprofit organizations supporting war veterans and at-risk youth and manufacturing
reusable bags for the cause. Together with environmental groups and donations from private sponsors, the coalition plans to produce and give away
1 million reusable grocery bags made from recycled and/or repurposed materials.
Starting January 1, 2014, plastic bags will be illegal to distribute in large retail stores in L.A, while smaller stores will be obligated to follow suit by
July 2014. In the meantime, paper bags costing 10 cents will be available for those who don’t bring reusable bags to the store. Of course, the goal is
to eliminate the use of plastic bags for something as simple as transporting groceries.
Putting Single-Use Bags Out of Circulation
L.A. councilmember Paul Koretz, who spearheaded the plastic bag ban, told local media outlets the idea was to get Angelinos to switch to eco-
friendly reusable grocery bags rather than become dependent on wasteful – and expensive – plastic bags.
Until then, paper substitutes will be offered as a temporary fix. Collaborations like those between veterans and troubled youth organizations will
supply reusable bags for people who need an alternative to single-use bags. Local business owners who feel like contributing to the cause can also
take matters into their own hands.
Your Own Reusable Bags
While the L.A. community’s efforts are inspiring, local business owners can prepare by ordering customized wholesale eco-friendly reusable bags
before the new law sets into effect. The support of local business owners was crucial to the passing of L.A.’s plastic bag ban and you have every
reason to show how much you care.
Eco-friendly reusable grocery bags will sooner than later generate more business, the investment in reusable shopping bags won’t be wasted.
