latinoamericano que viven en Estados Unidos y Canadá.

Un evento anual que consiste en una serie de actividades de promoción y educación de la salud que incluye talleres informativos, canalización a servicios y a programas de seguro médico, así como exámenes básicos de

detección gratuitos. En Arkansas, el Consulado

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Binational Health Week (BHW) has become one of the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to improve the health and well-being of underserved

immigrants and migrants of Latin American origin living in the United States, and Canada.

An annual two weeklong series of health promotion and health education activities that include workshops, insurance referrals, and medical screenings.

The Binational Health Week is intended as a fi rst step in a larger program of cooperation amongst North American and Central American countries to improve the health and well being of immigrant workers and their families.

Q & A with Norma McCorveythe former Jane Roe of Roe v Wade

In 1969, at the age of twenty-two, a pregnant Norma McCorvey became the plaintiff in an abortion suit that later evolved into the infamous Supreme Court case, Roe v Wade that legalized abortion in this country. She spent 28 years in guilt-induced drug binges and abortion clinic jobs trying to justify her involvement in the legalization of abortion. McCorvey said, “after being Jane Roe and working in the reality of death at various abortion clinics, it began to eat away at my soul. God was my saving grace that literally saved my life.” In 1998 Norma’s faith journey eventually led her home, as she describes it, to the Roman Catholic Church. In her autobiography, “Won By Love,” she goes into great detail about her work in the abortion industry that ultimately led her to drugs and suicide attempts. Norma now has dedicated her life to spreading the truth as she lived it, including her involvement in Roe v Wade and what she saw in various abortion clinics.

nacional se encuentran las Secretarías de Salud y de Relaciones Exteriores de México, los Ministerios de Relaciones Exteriores de Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia, y Ecuador, el Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior, y el Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social.

Este año la Semana Binacional de Salud se llevará a cabo en 40 estados de la Unión Americana, y 3 provincias en Canadá, con la participación de las redes consulares de los 7 países participantes, en Mexico se llevarán a cabo actividades en los estados con mayor migración internacional.

El año pasado la Semana Binacional de Salud obtuvo la mayor participación desde

su inicio en 2001. Se estima que el año pasado 301,661 personas participaron en 3,941 actividades 6,586 agencias y 15,497 voluntarios participaron en la organización de las actividades bajo el liderazgo de 88 consulados de los 4 países organizadores, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador y Colombia.

Durante la Semana Binacional de Salud de este año, tendrá lugar también una campaña nacional de conscientización en los temas de Autismo, Diabetes y Obesidad, VIH y SIDA, y Preparación para Casos de Emergencia.

In Arkansas, the Mexican Consulate will be holding a free health fair on the ground of the Mexican Consulate. The event have the support of the Arkansas Minority Health Commission, BreastCare, Susan G. Komen Arkansas Prostate Foundation, Esperanza y Vida, ConnectCare, Healthy Smiles, UALR Extension Services, UAMS Head Start, MLK Head Start, Silver City Head Start, JCCSI, Arkansas Human Development Corporation, Hampton Roy,

Kroger, ¡Hola! Arkansas and other organizations.

The closing of the SBS in Arkansas will be celebrated Saturday, October 15 with a community Health Fair organized by the Arkansas Minority Health Commission in support of the National Latino AIDS Awareness Day. Special guest will be the Mexican comedian Fernando Arau at the Vision Christian Academy in Geyer Springs, Little Rock.

Main partners include the Secretariats of Health and of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia and Ecuador, the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, the Mexican Social Security Institute and the United States-Mexico Border Health Commission.

This year, BHW will take place October 3-14, in 40 states

in the U.S. and 3 provinces in Canada, with the participation of the consular networks of the 7 participating countries.

Last years Binational Health Week witnessed the largest participation since its inception in 2001. Even though no career path is absolutely immune to economic fl uctuations, there are those that can weather the ups and downs much better than others. Rather than fi nd yourself on the unemployment line the next time government offi cials take to the airwaves with poor economic news, it could pay to get into a career that’s a bit more secure for the long haul.

Certain factors indicate that a career can ride out a recession. These include jobs that are in high demand, ones that require special skills, positions that continue to provide goods and services despite what is going on in the economy, and jobs offered by stable companies.

Recent statistics indicate that occupations such as construction, retail, transportation, manufacturing, and professional-type jobs, like lawyers and architects, are taking a hit in this economy. But others seem to take the punches and bounce back.

The following jobs are ones you might want to consider in a

recession. • Sales and marketing: An

individual who makes or saves money for a company should be relatively secure in his or her position.

• Education: Where there are students, there will be a need for teachers and administration offi cials to populate the nation’s schools.

• Healthcare and pharmaceuticals: It’s impossible to turn back the hands of time and the Fountain of Youth has yet to be found. As people grow older the demand for quality healthcare and the medications that keep them healthy will be needed. Think about a job as a physician’s assistant. Managed care companies look favorably on physician’s assistants (PAs) because they earn less than doctors, but still offer the same general care.

• Federal jobs: Few federal employees are let go, even during a recession. Government jobs generally lose employees only when employees leave and are not replaced. Federal jobs often feature steady periodic pay

increases and good benefi ts, which make them attractive options for individuals looking for stability.

• Computers: It pays to know the inner workings of computers and be able to program software or manage databases. Complex

systems that require distinct skills will not fall out of favor.

• Environmental industries: The green movement isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, say experts. Now may be the time to jump on board in the

environmental job of your choice.

• Accounting: Thanks to ever-changing tax laws and codes, certifi ed public accountants remain pretty steady during recessions.

• Financial planning: Aging

Baby Boomers need advice on how to propagate their nest eggs, securing the jobs of financial planners. Additionally, folks in general are looking for ways to stretch the dollars they do have a bit further.

There has been much interest in Mediterranean cuisine and its possible medical benefits. However, individuals who prefer the spice and fl air of Latin dishes may also be better for it with respect to their health.

There are certain components of Latin cooking that can be advantageous to those watching their weight or making dietary changes for another reason. Mainstay ingredients of Latin cooking have a multitude of benefi ts.

Quinoa: Quinoa is a grain that offers substantial protein and essential amino acids. Because of the protein it packs, it is a good option for vegetarians.

Chiles: The capsaicin in

chiles that give the peppers their hot bite can help reduce infl ammation in the body. The peppers are also another good source of vitamin C.

Papaya: This fruit is a healthy addition to any fruit salads or as a side dish to meat and fi sh. Papaya contains potassium, folic acid and more vitamin C than some fruits more commonly associated with vitamin C, including oranges.

Avocado: Avocados are found in dips and toppings for many Latin-inspired foods. Although many people shy away from the fruit because of its high content of fat, avocados are excellent sources of good monounsaturated fats that help lower cholesterol.

Pumpkin seeds: These seeds contain phytosterols that help

promote healthy immune systems as well as protein. Instead of fatty snacks, people can munch on low-fat, low-calorie pumpkin seeds.

Beans: An undisputed leader in fi ber and protein, beans have three times the soluble fi ber of oatmeal. They can help reduce cholesterol and also help fi ll a person without a lot of fatty meats or other ingredients.

Cilantro: That spicy punch in salsas and other Latin dishes may not be from peppers but from cilantro. Cilantro is the leafy part of a coriander plant and is a good source of antioxidants. It can be a fl avorful addition to foods instead of adding calories through other ingredients.

Plantains: Similar in appearance to bananas, plantains

contain similar nutritional content as well. They are high in vitamin A, potassium and fi ber. But they should be eaten in moderation because they can be high in fat.

Seafood: Many Latin dishes feature seafood, which tends to be high in good forms of essential

fatty acids, especially oily fi sh like salmon, tuna and snapper.

Coconut milk: Coconut milk has a number of benefi ts, including being a rich source of manganese, which may help with glucose intolerance. It is rich in calcium and phosphorus, essential

nutrients for strengthening bones. Coconuts also may help reduce anemia by offering the body substantial iron.

Enjoying a Latin-inspired meal may not just be a tasty experience, but it can be a healthy one as well.

Papaya: esta fruta es una adición saludable a cualquier ensalada de fruta, o como plato acompañante de la carne y el pescado. La papaya contiene potasio, ácido fólico o folato, y más vitamina C que algunas frutas asociadas comúnmente con esta vitamina, como la naranja.

Aguacate: el aguacate sirve para dips y condimento en numerosos platos de inspiración hispana. Aunque muchos la evitan debido a su alto contenido de grasa, el aguacate es una fuente excelente de grasas monounsaturadas que ayudan a reducir el colesterol.

Semillas de calabaza: estas semillas contienen fitosteroles que contribuyen a la salud de los sistemas inmunológicos, así como

proteínas. En vez de consumir meriendas abundantes en grasa, es mejor comer estas semillas de calabaza, bajas en grasa y en calorías.

Frijoles: los frijoles, líderes insuperables en fi bras y proteínas, tienen tres veces la fi bra soluble de la avena. Además, reducen el colesterol y producen una sensación de llenura sin consumir demasiada carne grasienta u otros ingredientes.

Cilantro: ese toque picante en las salsas y otros platos latinos no procede de los pimientos picantes o chiles, sino del cilantro. El cilantro está compuesto por las hojas de esa planta, y es una buena fuente de antioxidantes, y puede ser un sabroso componente de las comidas en vez de añadir calorías con otros ingredientes.

Plátanos de freír: similares en apariencia a las bananas, los plátanos de freír los igualan en contenido nutritivo, pues tienen

abundancia de vitamina A, potasio y fibra. Pero se deben consumir con moderación pues pueden tener alto contenido de grasa.

Pescados y mariscos: numerosos p l a t o s h i s p a n o s con t ienen p e s c a d o s y mariscos,

abundantes en buenas formas de ácidos grasos esenciales, especialmente en pescados con

aceite como el salmón, el atún y el pargo.

Latinos know that Hispanic Heritage Month means more than bylaws and speeches. They are keen to the fact that the month’s most important aspect is educating others on preserving Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula’s culture and values. Nevertheless, it is important to note the history behind the above-mentioned holiday.

In 1968, under Public Law

90-498, US Congress approved the glorifi cation of the Hispanic fl avor -- and the infl uence of it in politics, economy and society -- as a weeklong celebration. Some time thereafter, 20 years to be exact, President Ronald Reagan extended the holiday for a period of 30 days (replacing the word “week” with “month” in the original proclamation) with the hopes that the selected dates would coincide with the Independence Day celebrations

of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico, Guatemala and Chile.

Today, Hispanic Heritage Month is a national observance authorized by Public Law 100-402, which states that the President is hereby authorized and requested to issue annually a proclamation designating the 31-day period beginning September 15 and ending on October 15 as “National Hispanic Heritage Month”. Due to this, and to the enthusiasm produced at Hispanic

neighborhoods around the country, during the month tribute is paid (through ceremonies, workshops, festivals and public displays) to the achievements, contributions and traditions that millions and millions of US Hispanics have to offer.

President Reagan’s decision in 1988 could not have been more true: the US Hispanic population has grown more than 50% in the last 10 years, and it is expected to continue changing the face of

the country throughout the 21st century. Inclusively, if we take a look at the fi gures hidden behind Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll see that:

* Hispanics constitute more than 16.3% of the total US population. In other words, more than 50.5 million inhabitants. Researches estimate that this group will number 80 million in 2040.

* The majority of Hispanics in the US come from Mexico

(almost 70% of the total Hispanic population to be exact) and Puerto Rico (almost 10%).

According to statistics, this group’s buying power overpasses $561 billion a year, making it a fundamental element in the US economy. Hispanic household incomes have risen from $14,000 a year in 1980 to $29,000 a year in 1996. It currently stands at $34,000 a year, which constitutes an increase of 132%.


Aunque los hispanos reconocen que el festejo de la herencia hispana es un tema que va más allá de estatutos y discursos, y donde lo fundamental es enseñar a aquellos a su alrededor a preservar los valores culturales originarios en todos los países de América Latina y la Península Ibérica, es importante saber, aunque sea un poco, la historia detrás de dicho festejo.

En el año 1968, a través de la ley pública número 90-498, el Congreso de Estados Unidos aprobó esta glorificación del sabor hispano — y de la influencia del mismo en el ámbito de la política, de la economía y de lo socia — como un festejo de una semana. Algún tiempo después, veinte años para ser más exactos, el presidente Ronald Reagan expandió la celebración por un período de treinta días (cambiando la palabra week por month en la

WASHINGTON, DC - Members of Congress, immigrant legal service providers, new citizens and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Alejandro Mayorkas celebrated Citizenship and Constitution Day on Capitol Hill on September 21. Earlier in the day, USCIS announced the award of $9 million in grants to expand citizenship and integration programs. The grants will be awarded to 42 organizations ranging from public or nonprofi t organizations that provide citizenship preparation services to eligible immigrants.

According to government data, 7.9 million immigrants are currently eligible for citizenship. The top 20 states with large immigrant populations eligible for citizenship are California, New York, Texas, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Arizona, Washington, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Georgia, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio. In Florida for example, 680,000 legal permanent residents are eligible for naturalization which represents 5.3% of the voting eligible population.

En Arkansas the Arkansas Hispanic Woman Organization (HWOA) trabajan en el esfuerzo civico.

CitizenshipWorks (www.citizenshipworks.org/es) que brinda asistencia gratuita y fácil de usar a inmigrantes de bajos o medios recursos que quieren saber si cumplen todos los requisitos para aplicar para la ciudadanía. La plataforma también incluye videos interactivos que explican cómo es el proceso de ciudadanía, como prepararse

para el examen de civismo y de inglés y que esperar en la entrevista de ciudadanía. From those who trace their roots to America’s earliest days to those who recently came to the United States carrying nothing but hope for a better life, Hispanics have always been integral to our national story. As an American family more than 300 million strong, we constitute one people, sharing sacrifi ce and prosperity because we know we rise and fall together. America is a richer and more vibrant country because of the contributions of Hispanics, and during National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the immeasurable impact they have made on our Nation.

Hispanics have had a profound and positive infl uence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that refl ect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community. They are doctors and lawyers, activists and educators, entrepreneurs and public servants, and brave service members who defend our way of life at home and abroad.

My Administration is dedicated to ensuring America remains a land of opportunity for all. Our economic strength depends on the success of Hispanic families across our country, and I am determined to put workers of all backgrounds back on the job to rebuild and modernize America, while helping small businesses grow and creating pathways to employment. We are also engaging the Hispanic community in public service, improving educational opportunities, and expanding access to affordable, quality health care. And we remain committed to fi xing our broken immigration system so it can meet America’s 21st century economic and security needs.

The future of America is inextricably linked to the future of our Hispanic community. In Arkansas, the Hispanic Woman Organization of Arkansas (HWOA) work closely with the community to prepare Hispanic to obtain their citizenship.

Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) said,

“New citizens are renewing Chicago and cities across the country, opening businesses, reinvigorating the political landscape, reminding us of what citizenship really means. So I support any effort to move more eligible immigrants towards citizenship. Last year, Ignacia Moya, at age 106, took the oath of citizenship in my District and she told me it was because she wanted to vote and be a citizen like her children and grandchildren. Such moments are touching and renew the patriotism of all of us, even those of us who were lucky enough to be born here.”

We must always remember that America is a great amalgam of the world’s cultures and that we are all

Providing a workable path to citizenship for those who desire it and allowing immigrants to be fully integrated into U.S. society is extremely benefi cial for this country. Integration is a key to entrepreneurship and

So how can we doubt this celebration? One could say that it is almost impossible to ignore it, much less if you take into

consideration that Hispanics are expected to make up much of the US population by the year 2050. Whoever has any doubts can just look around them to see the effect of the wave of Hispanics: ads springing up in Spanish, Spanish-language dailies and magazines in every corner, Hispanic athletes

involved in the day’s most important plays, a salsa song on a car’s stereo, etc.

Due to all of this, and other reasons that I was just not able to mention, having a special period every year designated as Hispanic Heritage Month is simply fundamental.

Reagan en el año 1988 no podía ser más acertada: la comunidad hispana en Estados Unidos ha crecido más del cincuenta por ciento en los últimos diez años, y se espera que siga modifi cando los rasgos culturales del país en las décadas restantes del siglo XXI. Inclusive, si nos ponemos a ver las fi guras que oculta el mes de la herencia hispana encontramos que:

* Los hispanos constituyen el 16.3 por ciento de la población total en Estados Unidos, es decir, más de 50.5 millones de habitantes. Se dice que este grupo alcanzará los ochenta millones para el año 2040.

* La mayoría de los hispanos que se encuentran en Estados Unidos provienen

de México (casi un setenta por ciento del total de la población hispana) y de Puerto Rico (casi un diez por ciento). El poder adquisitivo de este grupo sobrepasa los quinientos sesenta y un billones de dólares por año, lo que los convierte en un elemento fundamental de la economía estadounidense. Los ingresos por familia han incrementado de catorce mil dólares anuales en el año 1980, a veintinueve mil dólares en el año 1996 y actualmente están alrededor de los treinta y cuatro mil dólares, lo que constituye un incremento del ciento treinta y dos por ciento.

* Un setenta y dos por ciento de los hispanos que se encuentran en Estados Unidos están empleados, ya sea a medio tiempo o a tiempo completo.

Entonces, ¿cómo se

puede poner en duda dicha celebración? Se podría decir que es imposible hacerlo, mucho menos si se toma en cuenta que para el año 2050 se predice que los hispanos van a componer la cuarta parte de la población total de Estados Unidos. Cualquier persona que tenga duda sobre esto sólo debe mirar a su alrededor para notar el efecto de la ola hispana: avisos publicitarios en español, diarios y revistas hispanas en cada esquina, deportistas hispanos en las jugadas más asombrosas del día, una canción de salsa escuchándose en la radio de un automóvil, etcétera.

Por todo esto, y otras razones que aquí no alcanzamos a mencionar, tener cada año un período designado como el Mes de la Herencia Hispana es simplemente fundamental.
