AFGHAN-IRAQIFREEDOM WAR

MEMORIAL FUNDThe family of Warrant Erik Kesterson, a helicopter pilot who losthis life when his aircraft crashed near Mosul, Iraq earlier this yearis looking for assistance to build a memorial honoring Orego-nians who have lost their lives in Iraq or Afghanistan. They do not want to wait thirty years to see these fallen heroesremembered by their home state. The concept is to encourage all Oregonians, from every walk oflife and every group or organization to have fundraisers and thenbring these funds together at the State Capitol on October 30,2004. Skilled craftsmen and women can also donate their skillstowards completion of this memorial. We have been asked to help get this information out to themotorcycle community. But, we can do more, we can also useour regular contacts to get the word out to many other groups aswell. The list is endless and all those who would like to be a partof this project need to step forward and make yourself known. The cost of the project is estimated to be under $500,000 andany monies received that exceed the cost of construction will beput into a scholarship fund for the children of these men andwomen. Remember this is to be an Oregon specific memorialPlease contact me if you wish to help in any way or you maycontact the Kesterson family directly at:

GUM BALL RUN

We left with the roar of thunder and threat of rain. Left thethunder behind in Silverton, and chased the rain all the wayto Brownsville.

We finally made it there and paid our $20.00 each, thenhad to come up with some quarters for the gum ball machines( as per the name of the run) They marked the color of yourgum ball on your card . We decided to have a pop and danishat CC’s Ice Cream before we took off. Louie naturally hadroot beer—fortified with protein—according to the waitress—actually it was — ANTS!!

Man I’m sure glad I had diet Pepsi—no sugar for the ants!Off we rode—well until we got to the fifth turn—We made

it to Coburg and then,—we wound up in Eugene. Darn, wemissed the street. Finally got on the correct path once againand went to Marcola (never heard of it) and made our way tothe first bridge. On to the second bridge, there was anaccident. A lady biker on the run, went around a turn too fastand wound up in about a six foot ditch, with the bike sidewaysin the ditch and stuff scattered all over the place. The policewere already there and waved us on. One of the guys saidshe looked like she was O.K. So we went on to the secondbridge, where there was a bandit and a gum ball machine.Dug up a couple more quarters and got our cards marked.

Off we went again going through Crawfordsville (neverheard of that place either) and rode past the third bridge, hunting for the fourth—we were looking for Oak Street, exceptit wasn’t a street, it was something else. Good thing we gassedup AGAIN. Somehow we managed to get to the fourth bridgealthough we don’t know how we got there-it was at SankyPark, and there we were met with another bandit and gumball machine. By now Louie’s teeth are about stuck togetherwith all the gum balls he was chewing.

Somewhere along the way we saw more bridges, but weretoo hot to care, also tired of all the turns and wrong turns.

We did do the whole route, and there were a lot of reallypretty views, also several of the roads were ones that wewould not normally go down, and they were quite interesting. There was very little traffic and lots of nice curvy roads. A lotof time and thought were put into this route—although toomany turns—it was very good.

Finally made it back to CC’s Ice Cream & BBQ—we weresecond to the last to arrive. Ed Fisher and his wife fromSalem Hog and Tom from Pioneer Chapter were the very lastones to arrive.

We heard that two bikes were dropped (no injuriest) alsowe talked to a guy that went off the road into a ditch aboutfive feet. He was only going about 15 mph but somehow lostit in the gravel. He said he had a choice, the gravel or theblackberries and he opted for the blackberries and was thrownover the top of his bike. He wasn’t really hurt, but he sure wasall scratched up. We also learned that the lady that went inthe ditch wound up in the hospital with severe injuries, so weall prayed for her.

There were about 30 bikes and 50 people on this run, whichincluded BBQ burgers, beans, pop and cheezies. The run

pins will be mailed to us. There were only about five or sixdoor prizes—which we didn’t even have a chance at becausethey forgot to give us a ticket—nice!

A boy about 10 won a $50.00 gift certificate AND a Harleyphone. It sure was his lucky day. CC’s did a very good jobwith the food, also covered area and my burger was justperfect, not like shoe leather. Ed Fisher of Salem Hog wonthe first place with the most points for HIS BALLS—He wona $100.00 bill, and would you believe his wife won for theleast amount of points—she had 0 points—does that meanshe has NO balls? Oh well she did win a $50.00 gift certificateto somewhere and that’s something!! The Big winner of theday goes to the Klingers, who won a Pocket Chopper - Verycool!

Even though we made a lot of wrong turns we had a prettygood time, except that when we got home MY BALLS meltedall over in the bag and Louie’s——root beer also leaked allover everything in the bag, including things what should notget wet and sticky.

This run was put on by the Angelwing Riders and CC’sand the money is to be donated to fallen bikers & theirfamilies, also the Linn County Humane Society.

It was a beautiful morning as we met at Walkers to set off forTigard and Paradise H.D. It was an uneventful ride up I-5. Therewere plenty of donuts and lots of coffee to get us fueled for thefirst leg.

Since Brenda and I were one of two bikes riding two up wewere elected to lead the group of about eight bikes so others couldtry to keep their eyes peeled for Beavers along the route. Forthose of you that have never done this run, they put up posters onthe route with their beaver logo and a number. The person thatcomes closest to getting the exact number of beavers at the endwins a prize and a plaque. Anyway, the first leg was a very niceroute, as was the entire route.

Not a lot of places for food or drinks along the way, but atevery checkpoint were some unique and interesting games forsecond chances, or simply to draw your hand. For example, wetossed a hacky sack type footbag into an old pop bottle crate thathad the squares lined with cards.

At another checkpoint they had small wheels similar to a wheelof fortune to draw your poker card with. It was cool getting awayfrom the old standard of drawing from a pile.

All went well until the 3rd leg. On the last curve before weintersected Hwy 47 in Banks as I was leading, I went into a 15M.P.H. curve doing probably 25 or so. As I laid the bike over myleft floorboard scraped, as it had done many times in the past.Unfortunately, I laid the bike over a bit too far, the scrapingstopped replaced by the sickening sound of the entire left sidescraping as Brenda and I went down. Louise was directly behindus and said the rear tire just came up, set back down and almostbit before coming off a final time We slid across the lane, Brendahad tumbled off, and I rode the bike into a very shallow ditch.Everyone stopped and helped us collect our wits, the bike, and acouple of parts that had come off. After a short assessment it wasdiscovered that she had scraped a portion off her left palm, whileI had lost some tissue off of my left middle finger. The bike hadcome out rideable, but with a bent crash bar, broken left lower, mirror, bent clutch handle and some scrapes along the left rearchrome and saddle bag. So after some minor first aid and a fewminutes we jumped back on and finished that leg.

Brenda rode the final leg with Dave Elam so she could continuegiving directions, I was done leading. Upon arrival we helpedourselves to the BBQ lunch and waited for announcements. Thehigh hand was a straight, with low being a 6,4,3,2,ace. SalemHOG didn‘t get any ride prizes but we did OK with door prizes.I saw Lyle win about 4 or 5 prizes, and between Brenda and I wegot an HD mousepad, one of those “S-100” cleaning and detailingkits, and a nice leather vest with lace up sides, though it didn‘tquite make up for damaging our beautiful bike.

All in all, we had an excellent time, a gorgeous ride and wewon‘t hesitate to do it again next year. For Your Information, weWILL be going on Rose City‘s poker run, weather permitting,we WILL be going to Bend for the State Rally, and there ain‘t noway we are going to miss Street Vibes.

We have been to quite a number of Poker Runs, but latelywe seem to be having a problem ! Now if you arefollowing in a group—it’s lots of fun and you can enjoythe scenery——BUT— if you are leading the group it’s upto you to figure out where all the correct streets are——never mind the fact that many of the signs are half hidden,or out of your line of sight. And then how about the streetsthat have two different names, one on each side of theintersection, and if you look in the wrong direction youdon’t see the name—well that is until you’ve gone acouple or so miles on down the street & finally figure outthat something must be wrong. So you double back to tryto find the correct street—oh and did I mentionthat there are about 20 other bikes following you trying tofigure out what the heck you are doing !! So with all ofthese bikes turning around it makes for unsafe conditions.Another thing is all of these extra turns at .01, .03, .06 etc. After you have made one turn you don’t hardly haveenough time to read the next one so close—oops missed itagain—turn around again—some of the 20 bikes behindyou caught it, so didn’t all have to turn around.

Another great idea is the total mileage and the mileagefrom turn to turn right next to each other—more confusion.By now the driver is getting ticked off at his navigator—which makes for more confusion and stress—oops missedthe next street ! OK- where is this leg supposed to end ? Answer: Blank’s Tavern ! OK-what town is that in ?Answer: H?#% if I know-just that it is in Oregon! Nowwhen this goes on for ALL 4 LEGS of the ride it just is NOFUN!

I know they try to make the runs more interesting, but inreality all it does is STRESS OUT THE LEADER of thepack. So the next Poker Run someone else will be theLEADER OF THE PACK, and I’m going to relax and enjoythe scenery, which is what we are here for in the firstplace.

For those of you that are planning on making the routesfor next years runs—please take into consideration thefact that strangers to that area do not see things the wayyou do, and it would be very helpful to mention the townthat leg ends in, so if anyone gets lost they can at leastASK directions.

It started to rain, just as we were leaving. Yes—uswimps actually do own rain gear! It rained half way toSalem and then dry. About 50 people showed up for this ride, which I guesswas pretty good, considering Rose City Hog had theirs thesame day. That was the most enjoyable Poker Run we have beenon for quite awhile. It didn’t have as fantastic scenery asthose with all the kiss your butt corners, but at least Icould appreciate it. The typing on the directions was inlarge print, so you could easily read it, and the totalmileage was the only column , so no getting mixed up.The road signs were where you could find them, also they had a large piece of orange paper with a blackarrow at each turn—that was very helpful. All the people atevery stop were very very friendly. This run was sponsored by D.O.G.—Dallas Old Guysand Gals Motorcycle Group. Proceeds went to the DallasCommunity Foundation, where they distribute money tothe most needy people. The run took us to Hemlick Park, Independence Park,Turner Inn, and wound up at the Washington Street SteakHouse in Dallas. The bacon, mushroom cheeseburgerswere on special for $5.95 with fries and they werefabulous, even my sort of rare one. Upon arriving we all received a chamois ( leather typerag to clean bikes) or rather to wipe off the excess waterafter washing. The ride was great. It was 89 miles long. Oh yes wedid get rain after leaving the Turner Inn, so made a quick

stop to put on our rain gear. No more rain after we wereall ready for it. They had a lot of door prizes. Judi won a red, whiteand blue wreath and didn’t want it, so I got it. Doug won abig jug of oil and didn’t want it, so Louie got it. I won$20.00 gift certificate from the Dallas Bar & Grill—YES,also some dog toys—for my cats.! Bill from Walkers was there & he brought $100.00worth of door prizes that Gene Walker donated. ThanksGene. Bill won a pin from Walkers—just what he wanted! I would like to thank all the D.O.G.S. for puttingon a really great run. We really appreciated not having toargue over the darn directions. This is a run I would highly recommend for everyone toput on next years list.
