THE FLAGS
The Hofstra Bag, bearing the seal of the University, was presenred to Hofstra on April 19, 1940, by Dr. Alexander Loudon, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, in the name of Her Majesty, Wilhelmina, Queen of the N etherlands. The seal, designed by the late Constant van de \'\7all, Associate Professor EmerituS, is derived from the coat of arms of the House of Orange-Nassau. The motto, "Je maintiendray," means "I stand steadfast."
To the left and right of the center platform are the flags of countries from which students have come to Hofstra. They are Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, &uador, Estonia, Finland, Formosa, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Liberia, Malagasy Republic, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Rhodesia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, South Vietnam, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Trinidad, Turkey, United Arab Republic, United Kingdom, United States of America, Venezuela and West Germany.
THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The ceremonial mace, carried by the Grand Marshal in the academic procession, was given to Hofstra by Halsted Billings Vander Poel, son of the former trustee, W. Halsted Vander PoeL
The mace is made of silver with a shaft of ebony. Its design is based upon one of the oldest maces of Yale University, dating from the time of Queen Anne. Engraved upon the head is the Hofstra seaL Around the upper portion of the haft appears the quotation from the Book of Proverbs : "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them."
The history of the mace in ceremonies begins in the 13th century when ceremonial maces were borne by the sergeant at arms, a royal bodyguard established in France by Philip II and in England by Richard I. When used in our Commencement Exercises, its presence symbolizes the authority by which Commencement is held and under which degrees are granted.
THE COLOR GUARD
The uniforms worn by the University Color Guard (members of the Hofstra Reserve Officers Training Corps) are similar in every detail to those worn by the Dutch Burgher Guards of New Amsterdam in the year 1644, when the settlement at Hempstead received a Dutch grant from Governor Kieft of New Amsterdam.
THE GONFALONS
These pennant-like ensigns were firSt used in University ceremonies during the dedication of the Hofstra Library. The history of the ceremonial use of gonfalons seems lost in antiquity. Probably best remembered is their appearance at the head of
Commencement Notes (Continued)
the parades of the Crusades where they presented the coats of arms of legion commanders and during battle were the rallying points of the legions. The gonfalons of Hofstra carry the seals of the Colleges and Schools of the University.
The seal of HofStra is worked in threads of gold, silver, red, blue and green, against a background of white silk, derived from the great seal of the House of Orange-Nassau. (See note under "The Flag.")
Other gonfalons, from audience left to right, are as follows: the second gonfalon is that of the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and carries the seal of the province of Friesland, the original home of the Hofstra family. The pennant below the seal has the colors of Hofstra, blue and gold, at the left and right, and the colors of the College, white for arts and gold for the sciences through the center.
Third is the gonfalon of New College of Hofstra. The seal is that of the province of Zeeland. Blue and gold trim the sides of the pennant with the white center band proclaiming the arts philosophy of New College.
The gonfalon of the School of Business carries the seal of the province of Gelderland. The University blue and gold trim the pennant, with the traditional drab filling the center stripe of the gonfalon.
The School of Education gonfalon carries the seal of the province of Groningen. The colors of Hofstra trim the pennant, while the light blue of education is the center color.
The gonfalon of University College carries the seal of Limburg province. University colors trim the pennant and, since the University College is the administrative headquarters of all programs in evening hours, the center area carries colors of all colleges and schools.
The final gonfalon is that of the School of Law. It carries the seal of Noord Brabant province, is trimmed in the University colors, and carries a band of purple through the center to indicate law.
THE MARSHALS' SCAPULARS
The Marshals in today's academic procession are wearing especially designed scapulars of their offices. The scapulars draw their basic characteristics from the official seal of the University. Each is designed against a background of silver thread, laid with gold lace and embroidered threads of red, blue, and green, the colors of the Hofstra seal.
The scapular of the Grand Marshal carries the University seal in full color as the breastplate. The breastplates of the other Marshals are linked with other significant sections of the seal. The badges of the Trustee and Guest Marshal, Faculty Marshal, and Graduate Marshal carry from one to four tassels of gold, in order of rank, while the scapulars of the highest rank, Grand Marshal, and the Senior Marshal are without tassels. Assistant Marshals carry batons.
These badges of office and the gonfalons were designed and executed by Gabriel Jooris and family, working in cooperation with the Office of the Secretary of Hofstra University.

ACADEMIC HERALDRY
The wearing of caps, gowns and hoods at college and university funCtions dates to the Middle Ages, when they were first worn by monks and students for warmth in the damp and drafty 12th century castles and halls of learning. Through the years their style and color have come to represent certain specific meanings.
Gowns for the bachelor's degree, won through undergraduate study, have a semistiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. The bachelor's gown is worn closed, and is primarily distinguished by its long pointed sleeves.
The gown for the master's degree has the same yoke effect as that of the bachelor's but is designed so that it may be worn open or closed. The back of the sleeve is oblong and cut square, with the front part carrying a cutaway arc.
Gowns for the doCtor's degree are also worn open or dosed. They have long velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the bell-shaped sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinCtive of the field of learning to which the degree pertains.
Cereain changes were made in 1960, and some colleges and universities have departed from the traditional black and adopted gowns in the primary colors of the institution.
Caps may be of serge, broadcloth, cotton, rayon or silk, or, for the dOCtor's cap only, of velvet. The tassel of the doctor's cap may be of gold thread. The caps normally are mortarboards in shape, although women may wear soft, square-topped caps.
Members of the Hofstra Board of Trustees wear academic caps of black velvet which are replicas of those worn by the faculty at the University of Amsterdam, thus carrying out Hofstra's Netherlands tradition.
It is the hood that gives color and definitive meaning to the academic costume. The hood is of varying sizes for the three degrees and of material to match the gown. It is lined with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is bordered with velvet of the proper width and color to indicate the field of learning.

WILLIAM]. McGILL
William J. McGill is the 16th President of Columbia University. He assumed this post in September, 1970, when he was 48 years old.
When he was selected for the Columbia presidency, Dr. McGill had been Chancellor for two years and Professor of Psychology for five years at the University of California at San Diego. Dr. McGill is a native of New York City and his appointment to Columbia was a homecoming to both the city and the university, as he had previously been Professor of Psydlology at Columbia from 1956 until he moved to San Diego, in 1965.
Dr. McGill earned his A.B. at Fordham College in 1943, was later elected to Phi Beta Kappa by the College, and received his Master's from Fordham University in 1947; in 1953, he earned his Ph.D . in experimental psychology at Harvard Un iversity. He served for one-year periods as instructor at Fordham, teach ing fellow at Harvard, and instructOr at BostOn College before joining the staff at Lincoln laboratOry at MassachusettS Institute of Technology in 1951. In 1954, he was named Assistant Professor of Psychology at M.LT.
Dr. McGill is credited with outstanding contributions in quantitative psychology, particularly in information processing. He is highly regarded as a theoretician and experimentalist and is considered to be in the forefront of the advancing knowledge of sensory mechanism.
Dr. McGill is a member of Sigma Xi (honorary science fraternity) and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
HOW A RD A. RUSK
Howard A. Rusk, M.D. is Professor and Chairman, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York University Medical Center; Director, Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York University Medical Center; Contributing Editor, The New York Times; and Contributions Editor, Medical World N ews.
Already a distinguished physician practicing internal medicine and teaching at the St. Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Rusk volunteered for the armed forces in 1942. Recognizing that a healed wound should not mark the end of care, he launched a convalescent training program with the support of the Chief Air Surgeon, Major General David N. W. Grant, and Lieutenant General H. H. Arnold, Chief of the United States Air Force. ItS success convinced him that a third phase, which he called "from bed to job," should be added to prevention, medicine's firSt phase, and cure, its second.
World-wide acceptance of his concept has resulted from his own tireless advocacy of it with the medical profession itself, industry, labor and the general public. He has taught others the skills, established teaching poStS here and abroad, and initiated groups of concerned specialists in many nations. Today, more than 80 per cent of those who benefit from third phase care have been able to overcome handicaps and do gainful work.
Dr. Rusk, a native of Missouri, earned his A.B. at the University of Missouri and his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. Writing regularly on science for The New York Times since 1946, he has also contributed numerous articles to professional journals and is the co-author of four books and senior author with 34 colleagues of a fifth book on rehabilitation of the physically handicapped.
