SALuaas! from CENTRAL MEXICO & BAJIO CHRISTIAN MISSION TOM SCHNELLER.W FAMILY APARTADO POSTAL 853 QUERETARO, QRO. 76000 MEXICO Published Quarterly Volume 20, Number 1 2 DEATHS 2 BIRTHS On May 19, 1989, a young couple with whom we have been having Bible studies tor quite some time, died. However, it was not the type of death that you might expect. The type of death that took place was a death to sin. Lole and Anna Rodriguez were both burled in a watery grave. On that day at 4:45, this young couple accepted Jesus as Lord and was baptized. Some of you reading this newsletter will recall that we have mentioned Lole and Anna before. For those of you who don't, this young couple live in a nearby village named "TLACOTE." They are friends of a young Christian couple named Lupe and Luz (Luz was baptized approximately 3 years ago). Lole and Anna were having marital problems when they were introduced to us. It was then that Tom and Humberto Ramirez (a national preacher) began to meet with them on a weekly basis. Through several months of studies with them, we began to see their marriage improving. The Lord was really beginning to work in their lives. They desired to know more and more about what God had to say to them by way of His Word. After one of our studies on Friday, May 19, Loleand Anna told Tom that they wanted to be baptized and wanted to know when would be a good time. Since Lole was working on the weekends, he wanted to know if it had to take place on a Sunday. Tom told them that there was no better time than the present. So, we all headed over to the camp's water tank. It was there that this young couple, Lole and Anna, died to sin and was born again. We ask that you please pray for them in their new life in Christ. —Tom Dead to sin (Lole and Anna) BILLHOFFw FAMILY APARTADO POSTAL 57 QUERETARO, QRO. 76000 MEXICO Summer 1989 WHAT IS MOLE? Mole is a Mexican sauce made up of almost everything imaginable. Although there are as many different variations of mole as there are cooks in Mexico, a common list of the sauce's ingredients includes: chicken broth, sesame seeds, peanuts, chocolate, walnuts, tomatoes, and several varieties of dried chili peppers. The sauce is usually served with pieces of chicken or turkey and eaten with rice and corn tortillas. Because of the time and work involved in the sauce's preparation, it is usually reserved for special occasions. I arrived at this conclusion after helping prepare the dish for the Church's Mother's Day celebration. It took 3 women (and 2 blenders) six hours to prepare enough mole for the entire congregation. The dinner was only one part of the Mother's Day celebration. In keeping with tradition, on the night before Mother's Day, the older youth serenaded each of the mothers in the Church and presented her with a red rose. The younger youth also made a presentation to the mothers. They decorated tiny signs with hearts and flowers and wrote loving phrases such as: God bless you!. You're #1! and I like you! These miniature signs were then posted in a potted violet adorned with bow and given to the mothers. Each of these deeds of kindness: the mole dinner, the serenade, and the sweetly decorated violets helped to make Mother's Day a special day for special people our mothers! —Toni

ToniSTEP BY STEPThegroundbreakingfor theChristianChurchof Jardines dela Hacienda washeldonApril 30th. This ceremony marked animportant step forward. As readers of Saludos will recall, this congregation purchased property four years ago. and was defraudedby the seller. After years of legal maneuvering, it became apparent that while the court case will eventually be decided Intheir favor, the congregation had become apathetic and ceased togrow, This was due to alack of an adequate meeting place. Therefore, thebelievers decided toinvest the building fund in the purchaseof other property. Suitable lots were found near the previous ones andpurchased. The drafting of plans was begun. In April a groundbreaking ceremony was held. Al Gonzalez andBill Hoff turned the symbolicfirst spadeof earth. Thecongregationparticipatedin songandprayer andapicnic. It wasagreatfirst step.Agoodbeginning doesnot, however, meanrapidprogress. Withplansinhand, the architect appliedfor a"use of soil" permit(a kind ofzoning)fromthe federalgovernment. (Alllandultimatelybelongs to thenation.) He was toldthat hemust havea letterof consent fromtheneighborhood association. It took three weeksfor Bill to see and convince each of themembers of the executive committee andobtain theletter. (The fact that he hadworkedonacommittee that savedthelocal parkfrombeing turnedintoaschooldidnot hurt.)Now the application for "use of soil" has beensubmitted, and thegovernmentshould respondwithin three weeks. With a favorable response,a building permit can be applied for. Thatusually takes 30days.All of thisis agonizinglyslow, buttheLordwill showhispower throughit. Bill ChurchGroundBreaking1TWO DIFFERENT WORLDSCome in, sit down, and join in. The study is in the livingroom of anupper middle class home. If you do not have a Bible we canfind one. Would youprefer English, Spanish or German? It this sounds like an unlikely Bible study, you must understand that itdoesexist. Bill teachessuchamulti-national group. Afterafewminutesofsharing, the studybeginsinearnest.Bill was surprised that the two American women in the group have very little Bible knowledge. The Mexican Catholic women canfind Scriptures withgreater ease than they. Bill tries to follow in best tradition of the Restoration Movement: letting the Bible speakandexegeteitself. That treatment, andawillingness tosay "I don'tknow" keeps communication open withpeople from sevendifferent churchbackgrounds. Thisis true evenwhenthe Scripturesandthe doctrineofaparticular churchdonot agree. The twowomen who organized the studies are knowledgeable in the Scriptures and are very helpful in keeping the study movingand citing pertinent Scriptures. After about 50 minutes, the study winds down and one of the ladies serves coffee and a small dessert (Bill'sspeciality). Bill is concernedthat the studygoesbeyondintellectualdiscussionandchangesheartsandlives.Bill holds a different style Bible study in the village of San Juan del Llanito. The group there is also composed of women, but thesocio-economic level is very different. There are no sofas, only hard chairs. Spanish is everyone's native tongue, and a couple ofthose present are illiterate. Here the needis for anauthoritative stance. TheBible studies right now are devoted toshowing theerrors of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Trying to appear as Christians, that sect has suddenly attacked the church. So far they have hadnoprogress with church members. The studies are designed to "inoculate" against them. They include topics such as the deity ofChrist, heaven, hell, the resurrection, the old and new covenant compared, etc. With each study Bill hands out a list of Scriptures tohelp thebeliever confront thefalsewitnesses. Two very different Bible studies withvery different groups of people, but one underlying principle: teaching unadulterated WordofGod. BillMOVING ONFor quitesometime, TomandToni have felt the Lordleading themto move on fromthe work in the city ofQueretaro andbegin looking towards starting anew work inanother area. They have been serving the Lord in the city ofQueretaro for four years, and they feel that they haveaccomplished the original goals they set before they came tothecity. Now, theybelieve that it istimetosetnew goals, bothshortandlongrange.Asa short range goal, they havebeen praying about continuededucation and preparation at agraduate school. After investigating several seminaries, Tomapplied at Fuller TheologicalSeminary (WorldSchool of Missions)in Pasadena, California. Toni is also hoping totaketwoor morecoursesat Fuller thatareofferedfreeofcharge to spousesof full-timestudents.Asalongrange goal, Tom and Toni are planning tomovedeeper into Latin America. After much prayer andconsideration, they have decided to move to San Pedro Sula,Honduras. Theyhopeto relocateto Hondurasandbeginnewchurch work after their preparationat Fuller. Themost exciting news was thatTom had immersed Daniel Obregon into the Lord Jesus. Thiscameassomewhatof asurprise consideringhis fatherhasnot made the decisionto becomea Christian. But Danhasfor some time faithfully attended church, andhe attends allthe youth functions. So because of Tomand Toni's ministryto the youth, and through the influence of a faith-filledmother, hemade the great stepof obedience.Shortly after the Hoffs" return on August 12th, theyreceived a telephone call fromHilda Catalina Cruz. She hadbeen studying in the Bible correspondence school forseveral years, and at one time had come very close to makinga decision. But since then, she had lapsed intocomplacency. Shehadrecently been studyingalesson onprayer which suggests that one should write a list of requestsand then check themoff as they are fulfilled. Shewassurprisedhow theLord was answering her prayers. One ofthe answersconcernedher continuingeducation, forshewishes to study toward a doctorate in "ArtificialIntelligence." She was acceptedin aprogramin Edinburg,Scotland. She told Bill, "I must make arrangements foreverything before I leave."She decided to give her life to theLord, because she did not knowif in Scotland she would findaminister who wouldimmerse her. What a joy it was for thecongregation toknow her and her sincere faith even thoughit was only three shortweeksbeforeher departure.Just two weeks after that, Bill received acall from a youngwoman who said that her sisters wanted to make acommitment. Olga and Monicaaresistersof NormaandRosalva. Rosalvais a student at ColegioBiblico(a SpanishBible college in Texas) and Norma (who called) works for thestateof Queretaro. Norma is a veryfaithful Bibleschoolteacher and worksin the church here. These young womenare the fruit of their sisters' witness, and of a class in personalevangelismBill gave showing the church how to use "PeaceTreaty" (see back page). BillSUMMER CAMPAs is thecasewith almost everycampdirector beforecampstarts, I had butterflies in my stomacheachtime Ithought of the week that was ahead of me. Had 1remembered totake care of everydetail? Would all theteachers, cooks, andevangelistremember thetight dates?Would we have enough shelter if it rained continually?Would therebe any campers? Could wehandlea medicalemergencysofar fromcivilization? Thenthemoment ofanticipation arrived. Campers began arriving, sleeping bagsand personal belongings in hand. Thefirst groupof 11campersarriveda littleearlymidnight thenight beforecamp was to start. We hadlots of floor space in the home wewere house-sitting and they had sleepingbags so everyoneslept well. Then the rest of the campers arrived the followingday. At theendof theday. therewereover 80campersregistered. Tom& ToniYOUTH ALIVEIt is often said that, "the youth are the future of the church,"but in the Jardines de la Hacienda congregation inQueretaro, they are avery real part of the present. Their joyandyouthful vigor andwitness aredaily strengthening thecongregation. One example is to be found when they, realizing that neither the Schnellers nor the Hoffs would havetime to run a DailyVacation BibleSchool, tookoverthewholeoperationandtaught 42 childrenforaweek. Afterwards, theyalsohelped visit thefamilies of thechildren. They dida great job as canbe attested to by the excitementof the childrenwhoBill visitedweekslater. How does a youth group develop such a dynamic? For thepast fouryears TomandToniSchnellerhave beenleadingthe group. Whenthey knewthat theywould be leavingQueretaro, they began praying for areplacement. They didnotrealizehow theLord was going to answer their prayers. In Mexico, a personis a "joven" (youth) until heor sheismarried. Some of theyouthinthechurcharein their 20's.But the real leader is a 26-year-old youngman named Hugo.About ayear agohe quit his studies in accounting and wentto San Jose, CA, to findajob. Somewhat like the "prodigalson," he found himself often without food, living in acrowdedroom, andbathinginabug-infestedbathroom. AChristian brother tried tohelp him, but hewas resistant. Finally, herepentedandaskedhimself, "Whatam1 doingherewhen my family has a nicehouseinQueretarowithplentyof foodandmyfamilylovesmeandneedsme." Hereturneda changed person. Now he leads the regular youthmeetings on Saturdays and participates In the Sundayservice Inanywaypossible. Inanswer toTomandToni'sprayers, theLord changed one person in their own group tobecome theleader theywere seeking. Wewereblessedby our co-workers, theHoffs, wholovedandsupportedus on adaily basis. We were blessedby the closefellowshipofdearChristianfriendswho were also servingthe Lordin the city(or surrounding cities). And it isaspecialblessing to be ministering toyoungpeople who are as eagerto learn, growand serve as those with whom we worked. Withall oftheseblessings heapeduponus, how could we leave?Inside both Tom andI there was a gnawing, a restlessnessthat would not leave. We needed to move on. The Church inOueretaro was in good hands.
