HOCKEY TRULY IS A SPORT FOR ANYONE

Hockey truly is a sport for everyone! It is played by men and women, boys and girls from the age of 5 through to people in their 80s.

There are programs, variations and levels of competition for every age and ability, including a comprehensive schools program.

Most of the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos players started their hockey career in school. In 2020 they will be competing at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Hockey is played by over 3 million people across more than 100 countries

Hockey was first played in Scotland in the 1700s

Hockey became an Olympic sport in 1908

The Kookaburras are currently ranked #1 in the world and the Hockeyroos are #2

DID YOU KNOW...

Sporting Schools is a $240 million Australian Government initiative designed to help schools increase children’s participation in sport.

Hockey WA’s School program has been developed to give children 5 to 12 a safe environment in which to learn the game of hockey in a modified game-based setting.

All Sporting Schools coaches are accredited and armed with the knowledge needed to run an engaging and enjoyable school program.

Sporting School grants can also be used to purchase hockey equipment through Just Hockey.

Hockey WA’s School Ambassador Program works closely with passionate teachers to develop the opportunities available to their school and students to access high quality hockey.

The School Ambassador Program is available for any Primary or Secondary school teacher.

PARTNER SCHOOLS PROGRAMThis program is in place for those teachers and schools who access multiple hockey initiatives throughout the year.

There are Bronze, Silver and Gold Partner School status to be achieved.

YOUNG HOCKEY LEADERS AWARDS PROGRAMProvides the basic introduction to the leadership skills required when involved in hockey.

The course, aimed at school children from 14 – 19 years old, runs for a full day and introduces 4 main areas

1. What leadership entails and the relevance of role-modelling

2. Coaching and assisting

3. Introduction to umpiring

4. Running Small Sided games and competitions

Each course is personalised for the school and those participating

The course will provide participants skills and experiences offering them increasing the capacity grow as a coach, umpire, leader and communicator.

You do not need to have played a significant amount of hockey. Only a small understanding of the game is required.
