Hockey in Cornwall

Hockey is a popular, family-orientated sport, offering a lifetime of sporting andsocial opportunities. Nationally, there are over 1100 clubs, one million youngpeople with access to hockey and over 30,000 volunteers who coach, umpire,officiate and administer the game. Hockey in Cornwall is going from strength tostrength. Essentially, everyone involved in Cornish hockey endeavours to developthe sport, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to start, stay and succeed inthe game.

This booklet acts as a guide to hockey in Cornwall. It outlines county, club andschool structures, as well as offering advice to anyone who would like to getinvolved in this fast, exciting game. There are opportunities for players, teachers,coaches, umpires and volunteers at all levels.

The Cornwall Sports Partnership works in conjunction with the Cornwall HockeyAssociation, focussing especially on increasing the number of young peopleinvolved in hockey, developing player, coach and umpire pathways, and supportingthe club structure.

England Hockey

England Hockey is the National Governing Body for the sport of hockey in England.England Hockey is affiliated to the Federation of International Hockey (FIH) and theEuropean Hockey Federation (EHF). Governance of the game is devolved at aregional and local level. Cornwall is part of the West Region.

County Hockey

Hockey is played in the majority of schools in Cornwall. Throughout the season,there are several Cornwall Hockey Association (CHA), school and club tournamentsorganised for girls and boys for both indoors and field hockey at all age groups.County sides are selected at U14, U15, U17 and U19 girls and boys. The countyorganises open trials for young players to progress to Hockey Academies acrossthe county.

Hockey Development

Active Sports (2002 – 2007) has greatly benefited hockey in Cornwall byorganising courses for coaches, leaders, umpires, teachers and clubs. This workwill hopefully continue in the future with the formation of the Cornwall HockeyAction Group.

Cornwall Hockey Development CentresEstablished in 2003 by Active Sports to provide coaching and progression on theplayer pathway for talented young players. These centres are located across thecounty and link into the county structure as well as with the West of EnglandHockey structure.

If your school or club has young players aged U12 who show future potential,please contact the Hockey Development Officer to arrange feeding them into theplayer pathway.

Courses for Teachers

To support teachers and schools in delivering hockey, England Hockey hasintroduced eight new Coaching for Teachers courses. SCUK has commended thecourses for their educational content. Each course is linked to National Curriculumattainment levels and QCA objectives.These courses are:

• Hockey FUNdamentals • Hockey Transition for Key Stages 2 and 3• Hockey Team Play for Key Stages 3 and 4• Preparing for Competitive Hockey Key Stage 4• Encouraging Young Leaders and Officials – All Key Stages• Kick It Clear – Goalkeeping• Meet the Test – Hockey Examination PE• Inclusive Hockey for all Key Stages

Hockey Coaching

Players, teachers and volunteers are encouraged to become qualified hockeycoaches. The Cornwall Sports Partnership organises the following courses acrossthe county.

LEADERSHIPThis course is an introduction to all elements of hockey including coaching,umpiring and administration and acts as the first step on the coach education andumpiring programmes.This modular course links into the Sports Leaders Award (CSLA Bolt On) model. Itis aimed at parents, players or students who want to assist in the introduction ofthe game, especially with younger players.Recommended for 14 years +

LEVEL 1 – VRQ Assistant Coach AwardThis is the minimum qualification for those who are involved in hockey coachingsessions, working 'normally' under a more senior coach. It covers the essentialskills and knowledge necessary to run a safe and enjoyable session for introducingplayers to the game.The course includes:

• basic techniques• principles of play• use of small-sided games• the rules of the game• underpinning theory knowledge• skills to create a safe, enjoyable and effective environment

Open to all aged 16+, full award only when 18 years old.

LEVEL 2 – VRQ Coach AwardThis course is for those who wish to coach the techniques of the game beyond anintroductory level and apply them to tactical play and the coaching of teams. It isonly suitable for those with experience of coaching hockey.

Hockey Umpiring

The game of hockey cannot be played without umpires. There are lots of umpiringopportunities across the county – in schools, clubs and officiating competitions.The Cornwall Sports Partnership and Cornwall Umpires Association organiseintroductory umpire courses as well as mentoring qualified umpires to progressthrough the umpire pathway.

YOUNG UMPIRE AWARDBased solely on Mini Hockey, this is a fun introduction to hockey rules, designedfor young players of 8 to 13 years. This award operates in schools and junior clubs.

FOUNDATION UMPIRE AWARDThis Award is suitable for students (aged 14 +) or inexperienced club players whowant to learn the Rules of the game and some basic umpiring skills. It is anenjoyable course involving a theory session in the classroom, an examinationpaper and a short practical assessment.

LEVEL ONE UMPIRE AWARDThis Award is the passport to umpiring competitive hockey in England and isaimed at those who wish to take their umpiring seriously and officiate in localleagues and club games/events.

TEACHER – UMPIRING UPDATESInformal umpiring update sessions are organised to keep teachers and schoolcoaches up to speed with the latest rules.

Better Clubs ..... Better Coaching ..... Better Sport in Cornwall

The Cornwall Sports Partnership delivers a multitude of activities throughout theyear ranging from coach education courses to county player development centresand primary coaching festivals.

In the past four years, our coach education courses have helped over 1,000 peoplebecome fully-qualified sports coaches. We have also engaged over 40,000 childrenin sports activities in 10 different sports and have co-ordinated the delivery of anationally-recognised leadership programme across the county.

Every year, the 10 sports development officers co-ordinate activity within schoolsand clubs that eventually leads to a team of competitors being selected torepresent each of the 7 districts at the annual Cornwall Youth Games.

We try to support all sports activities and clubs within Cornwall and the Isles ofScilly. We work with volunteers and leadership programmes, enabling youngpeople to embark on the player pathway for sport.
