President Quistgaard, Bucky the Beaver and T. Todd Masman blow out the candles on the birthday cake for the Hobson Memorial Union, which celebrated its 40th year of operation this past week.

Student reaction ranged from sheer awe to pleasant surprise when Bemidji State College opened its million dollar student union the week of Jan. 15, 1968. The Union has archived an adap-tation of the Jan. 18, 1968 issue of the Northern Student, which fea-tured a story on the new center for student activities on campus. From Jan. 28-Feb. 1, students and staff at the Hobson Memo-rial Union observed the Union's 40th Birthday with a week of cel-

ebratory activities, including a snow sculpture contest, human dog sled racing, a birthday cake cutting ceremony with President Quistgaard and Bucky the Beaver and themed foods and snacks in the Lower Union. The events cul-minate on the night of Friday, Feb. 1 with a 60s-themed dance and costume contest in the Beaux Arts Ballroom. The events made the Union's anniversary celebration "A Week to Remember."

Bemidji State has received approval from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system board to begin offering a bachelor of science degree in management information systems. The new program will officially begin enrolling students during the Spring 2008 semester. Bemidji State’s management information systems (MIS) major combines business administration and business information systems courses into a highly-demanded business information technology program.

Integrating these existing programs into the MIS major involves classroom and real-world experience, leading to increased opportuni-ties for career placement or grad school. “The MIS major reflects a shift in emphasis and adds flexibility for students with a broad-er variety of backgrounds,” said Doug Leif, professor of business administration. “This program has a management, information, business and Internet application focus. All are related, but are different directions under the information technology umbrella.”

Bemidji State University is one of five higher education institutions in Minnesota to receive a capacity-building grant from the Minnesota Campus Compact. This $20,000 grant will help Bemidji State determine its abilities to begin a service-learning and campus-com-munity collaboration initiative over the next 18 months. With the grant, Bemidji State proposes to create a student-driven Community Leader-ship Center, a vision articulated by the stu-dent organization Students Today, Leaders

Forever meant to inspire participation in ac-tivities surrounding the University’s civic en-gagement signature theme. “This grant will help Bemidji State Uni-versity determine its abilities to support the activities of students who have a great enthusiasm and passion for community in-volvement,” T. Todd Masman, director of the Hobson Memorial Union, said. “We are going to assess the places where we can make a difference, and find places in the community that have needs we can meet.”

In that context he reviewed, made comments and approved a recent submission titled "From Utopia to Empire: Atarashikimura and a Personal View of the Greater East Asia War (1942)." Atarashiki-mura (New Village) was an artistic, anarchic, agricultural community founded by the Japanese author and painter Mushanokoji Saneatsu in 1918. With it he advanced the idea of transforming Japan into the leading cultural center of Asia. In addition, Tokyo would be the center for armament and scholarship for all of Asia.
