    Fencing

    • While in Madrid, Rizal practiced fencing andpistol shooting.

    • Rizal became master of the foil, saber anddueling sword, and acquired a legendaryreputation for grace and technique.

    • Rizal’s mastery of sword and as a marksman wasput to the test when he challenged AntonioLuna on a duel.

    • Rizal was an ardent pistol shooter, a passion he shared with the German framen. In fact Rizal’s friend and companion Jose Alejandrino called it an

    ‘addiction.’

    • Rizal's guns, "the smith" and Wesson number 3 revolver, or popularly known the Magnificent, can be found at the AFP Museum at Camp Aguinaldo inQuezon City.

    • Rizal made this assessment of his skill: Shooting slow fire at 25 meters, cockinfor each shot and firing one-handed in the traditional duelist’s stance, he

    Music

    • According to Mrs. Asuncion Bantug, Rizal’s grandniece, “among the arts, mfirst love.”

    • However, music did not come easily to him. His contemporary, Dr. Galicanorecalled that “He even found it hard to hum or whistle a simple melody . Whthe melody turned out to be so out of tune.” But determined to excel in muhow to play the flute and practiced hard. He also took up solfeggio, pianoculture.

    • Rizal was not deemed as an excellent flutist or singer but he went on with h

    inclinations by composing his own songs. Most of the songs were his poems music. His popular novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo also containpassages and references concerning music.
