SENIOR DAY—Today’s game marks the final regular season home game for 18 Statesmen seniors. They will be honored prior to the start of today’s game. The Hobart Athletic Department thanks them for their dedi-cation and hard work and wishes them all the best in their future endeavors.

SERIES SNAPSHOT—Today’s game marks the 109th gridiron meeting between Hobart and Rochester with the Statesmen leading the series 53-48-7. The Statesmen have won the past five meetings by a combined score of 151-75. Hobart has also won 11 of the past 12 meetings and 17 of the past 20. Coach MIKE CRAGG is 17-4 against Rochester.

BECAUSE IT’S THE CUP—Today marks the 10th Centennial Cup game between Hobart and Rochester. The rivalry game honors the 100th meeting between the two league foes, Hobart’s oldest active rivalry. The Statesmen are 8-1 in cup games.

POSTSEASON PICTURE—Hobart’s path to the NCAA playoffs is straightforward. If the Statesmen beat Roches-ter, they clinch at least a share of the Liberty League Championship and, by virtue of last week’s win over St. Lawrence, the automatic bid into the NCAA field. POLL POSITION—After upsetting then No. 13/16 St. Lawrence in Canton 34-18, Hobart moved up to No. 21 in the AFCA Coaches’ Poll and returned to the D3football.com Top 25 at No. 22.

downs of the game to break open a close contest on the way to a 42-20 win over the Yellowjackets. Quarterback SHANE SWEENEY com-pleted 22-of-28 passes for 256 yards and a Hobart single game record six touchdowns. Wide re-ceiver BRANDON SHED caught five passes for 101 yards and two TDs. Tight end ZACH WITHERS had three receptions in the game, including a pair of TDs. Linebacker MARCUS JEMISON recorded six tackles, three tackles for loss, and a sack. UR quarterback Justin Redfern threw for 194 yards and two TDs. Thomas Marone and Matt Mender shared game-high honors with 11 tackles for the Yellowjackets.

LAST TIME WE WERE HERE—The last time Rochester visited Ho-bart (Nov. 15, 2014), the eighth-ranked Statesmen closed the reg-ular season with a 28-23 victory. Hobart went into halftime with a 21-0 lead and weathered an ill-fated comeback attempt by the Yellowjackets in the second half. CONNER HARTIGAN ’16 rushed for a game-high 114 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead the Statesmen. Daniel Bronson threw for 149 yards and three TDs, but was in-tercepted twice. MICHAEL HARPER led the Hobart defense with 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, and an interception.

COMEBACK KIDS—Hobart has trailed all nine of its opponents this season and has rallied to vic-tory from fourth quarter deficits five times. The Statesmen trailed Brockport 35-21 with 9:36 re-maining, but scored a pair of late touchdowns to win 41-35. Hobart was down by as many as 10 (17-7 in the third quarter) to Union and faced a 23-19 deficit with 6:33 re-maining, but scored the game’s fi-nal eight points to pull out the win. The Statesmen trailed Merchant Marine 35-31 with just 54 sec-onds remaining, but scored the game-winning touchdown with 19 seconds left. After trailing Spring-field for more than 52 minutes, Hobart claimed its first lead of the game with 1:47 remaining to knock off the Pride 12-7. The Statesmen picked up their latest fourth quarter comeback at WPI, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with just three seconds remaining. The Statesmen nearly had a sixth, fourth quarter comeback at RPI, taking a 17-14 lead with 72 seconds left, but the Engineers scored with 20 seconds to go to hand the Statesmen their first loss.

NO DOUBT—Hobart has developed a reputation for late-game heroics this season, but did not wait until the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to put away St. Lawrence last weekend. The Statesmen seized the lead for good on BRANDON SHED’s second touchdown of the day with 6:10 remaining in the first half. Hobart broke the game open with fourth quarter touchdowns by JOSEPH BARROCAS and JACK PFOHL.

BROKEN RECORDS—Junior BRANDON SHED broke or tied five Hobart records last week in the win at St. Law-rence. He produced 12 catches for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Shed tied the record for receptions in

a game that was established by DAN SUOZZI in 2003 and tied by JACK PFOHL at WPI last month. Shed broke Suozzi’s game record for receiving yards. Shed also eclipsed the season records for recep-tions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. He enters the regular season finale with 65 catch-es for 1,109 yards and 15 touchdowns. The yards mark had stood since 1982 when SCOTT GEISE ’83 had 1,029 yards in nine games. The performance earned Shed a share of the Liberty League Offen-sive Performer of the Week award as well as a spot on the D3football.com National Team of the Week. He is third in the nation in receiving touchdowns, seventh in receiving yards per game (123.2), and 24th in receptions per game (7.2).

TOP TACKLER—Junior linebacker ALMAMY CONDE was named the Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week after recording a game and career-high 14 tackles against the Saints. Hobart held SLU to its second lowest scoring total of the season and held them 19 points below their home scoring average where they had outgunned the opposition 148-28. Conde leads Hobart and is third in the league with 84 tackles.

ROOKIE REWARDS—The Liberty League also recog-nized first-year linebacker JEDH DOWNEY with the Rookie of the Week award for his efforts at St. Lawrence. It’s the fourth time this season he has won the award. He made nine tackles, including a sack, on Saturday. Hobart had four sacks in the game, the most allowed by SLU this season. Downey is the only member of the Class of 2020 in Hobart’s starting lineup. He is second on the team and seventh in the conference in tackles with 75. He’s third on the team with 6.5 tackles for loss.

GIVE ME A BREAK—More broken records are on the horizon for the Statesmen. BRANDON SHED enters today’s game with 111 career receptions for 2,025 yards, and 25 touchdowns. The Hobart career record for TD re-ceptions is 26 (DAN SUOZZI ’05). Shed is also second in career receiving yards, but needs 819 yards to pass Suozzi’s standard. Shed’s 111 receptions are tied for 10th place on Hobart’s all-time list with RICK PIÑERO ’05. Shed is one behind No. 9 GARTH MURATORI ’12, five behind No. 8 TYLER VINCENT ’10, eight behind No. 7 JACK PFOHL, and 10 behind No. 6 RYAN LiDRAZZAH ’09.

MR. 3000—Junior SHANE SWEENEY is in the midst of the most productive passing season ever for a Hobart quarterback. Through nine games, he is 220-of-361 passing (61%) for 2,889 yards and 30 touchdowns. Sweeney has broken the Statesmen season records for completions, attempts, and passing yards. He is tied with SHAWN MIZRO ’07 (2004) for the most touchdown passes in a season. Sweeney needs just 111 yards passing to become the first Statesman to throw for 3,000 yards in a single season.

PASSING FANCY—Junior quarterback SHANE SWEENEY is the only quarterback in Hobart history to throw for 400-plus yards in a game more than once. At Brockport to open this season, he was 31-of-45 passing for 420 yards and four touchdowns. On Oct. 1 against Merchant Marine, Sweeney was 32-of-51 passing for 416 yards with five touchdowns.

MR. FOURTH QUARTER—SHANE SWEENEY has been at his best with the pressure on in the fourth quarter this season. In the final 15 minutes this year, he has completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,132 yards and 14 touchdowns against just two interceptions. Sweeney’s pass efficiency rating in the fourth quarter is 195.6. His focus gets even sharper on game-winning drives. Sweeney has directed five winning drives in the final three min-utes of the game, completing 80 percent (20-25) of his passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns.

LONG RANGE FORECAST—Although he’s only a junior, SHANE SWEENEY is already in the top 10 in several Hobart career categories. His 61.4 completion percentage is ahead of NICK STRANG’s record (58.9). Sweeney’s 277.2 passing yards per game would shatter the current mark held by CRAIG SWANSON ’05 (177.4). Swee-ney’s 7.8 yards per pass average is second only to Strang’s 8.3. Sweeney has 47 career touchdown passes, tied for second with CRAIG SWANSON ’04 and 14 behind No. 1 SHAWN MIZRO ’07. Sweeney has 349 comple-tions, fourth all-time and 43 behind No. 3 GREG HELMER ’97. Sweeney is also fourth in career passing yards with 4,436, 65 behind No. 3 Helmer.

HEAD OF THE CLASS—Hobart placed four players on the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of Amer-ica Academic All-District Team, matching the program record (2013, 2014). CENTURY MARK—Senior wide receiver SEAN CUNNINGHAM recorded his first 100-yard receiving day at Rens-selaer last month. He caught a career-high nine passes for a game-high 149 yards against the Engineers. That’s more receiving yards than the next four players in the game COMBINED. Hobart’s JACK PFOHL (46), BRANDON SHED (42), and TYNARD BARFIELD (28) and RPI’s John Costello (31) accounted for 147 yards.

TOMMY TWO POINTS—Junior linebacker TOM D’ANTONIO kick-started Hobart’s fourth quarter rally against Union. A Dutchmen TD with 6:33 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the visitors a 23-19 lead. Union elected to go for two, but D’Antonio intercepted the pass play and ran 98 yards for a defensive two-point conversion. It was the first defensive two-point conversion by a Statesman since Oct. 25, 1997, when MARK RENDELL ’01 scored two points in a 58-19 win over Alfred.

NEGATIVE CAMPAIGN—Hobart has recorded at least five tackles for loss in each game this season with the exception of the Merchant Marine game (1 for minus 1 yard). The Statesmen opened the campaign with nine tackles for loss at Brockport and matched that total against Union and at WPI. TOM D’ANTONIO led the charge into the Dutchmen backfield with a career-high four tackles for loss. It’s the most tackles for a loss by a Statesman since TYRE COLEMAN ’15 had six in the NCAA quarterfinals at Wesley. BRANDON BALL leads Hobart and is eighth in the league with 9.5 tackles for loss.

JUST FOR KICKS—Senior SEAN KIRSHE continues his pursuit of the Hobart career kicking records. He is second on Hobart’s career lists for field goals made, PATs made, and points scored by a kicker. He has 13 field goals to his credit, six shy of SHAWN FAZIO’s 35-year-old record. Kirshe has converted 114 PATs, nine behind ERIC AMPUJA’s 11-year-old standard. Kirshe has 153 career points and needs 27 more to match Ampuja’s mark.

UNDER PRESSURE—Hobart’s defense is first in the Liberty League and 45th in the nation in sacks per game (2.89). Senior defensive end JAMES HEDGER leads the league with 0.89 sacks per game while junior defen-sive end BRANDON BALL and sophomore defensive tackle AJ McFARLANE are tied for sixth at 0.44.

AS EASY AS 1-2-3—The 2016 season is Hobart’s 123rd varsity football season. Since the inaugural season of 1891, the Statesmen have compiled a 502-467-44 (.517) all-time record.

PUTTING POINTS ON THE BOARD—Hobart has scored in 157 consecutive games. The last time the Statesmen were shut out was Sept. 16, 2000, a 14-0 defeat at Rochester.

HE’S THE BOSS—Now in his 22nd season, Head Coach MIKE CRAGG has a career record of 149-58. He be-gan the season 14th among active coaches in career winning percentage (.712) and 21st among active coaches in total wins. Cragg has been voted the Liberty League Coach of the Year nine times and was the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2012.

O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN—Seniors MATT CRAGG, JAMES HEDGER, MARCUS JEMISON, PATRICK O’CONNELL, and NICK TESTANI, and junior SHANE SWEENEY were elected by their team-mates to serve as this year’s captains.

SCOUTING REPORT—Rochester enter today’s game looking to stop a six-game slide fol-lowing a last-minute 37-34 loss to WPI last Saturday. The Yellowjackets are averaging 24.8 ppg and allowing 43.3 ppg. Their bal-anced offense produces 165.6 yards rush-ing and 220.4 yards passing. Quarterback Daniel Bronson has completed 54 percent of his passes for 1,523 yards, and 12 touchdowns. He’s also the team’s leading rusher with 668 yards and five touchdowns on 130 carries. Shawn Silleman is his lead-ing receiver with 25 catches for 341 yards and two TDs. On defense, Rochester allows 315.5 yards rushing and 181.1 yards pass-ing. Ricky Sparks has a team-high 57 tack-les. Josh Churchin is second with 54 stops, including a team-high 4.5 tackles for loss.

ON THE AIR—Hobart football games are broad-cast live on WEOS-FM (89.5/90.3). Veteran play-by-play man TED BAKER will describe all of the action with former Hobart defensive line coach TERRY MUFFLEY providing analysis.
