Aloha Makai Ohana,

With so many great events in Hawaii, in just the past month, its been a wild ride! The Molokai to Oahu, Kaiwi Channel Relay, Waikiki Paddle Festival in Waikiki, Ho‘olaule‘a in Maui, the Molokai World Championship and the premeire unlimited six man canoe race the PAA ʻEono Hoe, both crossing the Kaiwi .

In the PAA ‘Eono Hoe, Hawaiiʻs first unlimited outrigger canoe race, between islands, made its 3rd annual race, not only was it exciting, always being the innovator, Race Director, Manny Kulukulualani, not only organized the race, he coached the Junior Crew, and also raced it!

Earlier in the month, there were two particular events, with one per-son, competing in the two. I would like to applaud waterman, and a great athlete, Jason Ignacio (pictured below) who in one day, paddled across the Kaiwi Channel in the Molokai Relay- Molokai to Oahu, immediately after completion, he hurried over from Magic Island, to Duke Kahanamoku Beach and the Waikiki Paddle Festival and com-peted in the Waterman Challenge, a 500 meter swim, a 1000 meter paddleboard, and a 1500 meter Stand-Up-Paddle race. By the way, Jason did great in both events. As an added challenge, the time of the waterman challenge was moved up one hour earlier! Now that is a waterman!

Wishing you and your ohana a great summer season, be safe, as all the keiki will be out and about, and no forget to be nice in the expected summer surf!

A hui hou,

Lono

The 4th Annual OluKai Ho’olaule’a saw over 500 waterman and women from around the globe converged on the Valley Isle of Maui, on May 12 and 13. The OluKai stands alone from any other Stand Up Paddle (SUP) and One-man Canoe (OC1) race in Hawaii offer-ing a $15,000 prize purse that awards gender equal prize money to paddlers who compete in the elite SUP and OC1 races. Beyond the paddle races, fun and free activities are celebrated in the spirit and traditions of the island cul-ture. Ohana enjoyed ancient Hawaiian games hosted by Maui Cultural Lands and the 2011 Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association Champions “Team OluKai” offered free sailing canoe rides in their new wa’a, Kamakani Eleu throughout the weekend. The 2012 OluKai kicked off promptly at 9am with 85 paddlers par-ticipating in the 3 mile, Olukai Ohana Fun Paddle. The Fun race started at the Paia Youth and Cultural Center on Paia Bay, and finished at Kanaha Beach Park. The Saturday noon, the SUP race saw 270 stand-up-paddlers challenge the 8 mile Maliko down-wind run with a 300-yard beach run finish. Connor Baxter of Maui won the men’s SUP race with a time of 47 minutes, 28 seconds. Andrea Moller from Haiku, Maui won the women’s SUP race for the fourth straight year with a time 56 minutes, 45 seconds. This yearʻs OluKai presented donations from their Ohana Giveback Program, to beneficiaries including the Paia Youth & Cultural, Lae’ula O Kai Canoe Club, Maui Cultural Lands, the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association and Hawaiian sailing canoe, Team,OluKai-Kamakani Eleu. After the age group and elite awards ceremony, the entertainment continued into the early evening with performance Ekolu Kalama, a world champion stand-up-paddler and recording artist from Molokai. On the second day, Sunday, 125 pad-dlers came out to compete in the OC1, 8-mile Maliko to Kanaha downwinder. The men’s winner was Danny Ching with a time of 49:20 and women’s win-ner was Rachel Bruntsch with a time of 57:25.

While most teenage girls choose to spend their free time sleeping, on their phone, at the mall, or hanging out with boys, a select few choose to challenge themselves by setting remarkable goals, overcoming their fears and making a positive mark on their community.Four such girls are Kelsi Cottrell, Nicole Fong, Savanah Hall and Malia Mizuno.Last year a couple of them began talk-ing about entering the 2012 Pa’a Kaiwi Channel Relay. While all of them have experience paddling with their respective club teams, none have ever competed in nor attempted such a difficult or lengthy race, and up until last month, there has never even been an OC-2 relay division for girls under the age of 18 years old. Knowing they needed a coach, Savanah approached Kelsi’s father Curt, who has been paddling for over twenty-five years and a veteran to the Molokai crossing. He agreed to do it, along with the help from Co-Coaches Greg Edwards and Sam Lemmo, on the condition they all made a commitment to put the time in to properly train and to establish a pur-pose for doing it. There were a number of obstacles each of the girls had to overcome which included doubts and fears they could actually do it, scheduling enough time in the boat to practice, conditioning and

unforeseen injuries. Two months prior to the race, Nicole had a terrible acci-dent at Shark’s Cove, falling twelve feet on to the rocks, lacerating her face and requiring eight stitches, which kept her from training for five weeks. However, with the support of Donna Kahakui, founder of Kai Makana, who provided the 25’ Stingray for the race, Kenway Chong of La Gelateria, the coaches, all of the parents and close friends, their dream of com-peting last month was realized. Curt Cottrell says, “It took a village to make this happen.” The night before the race they received inspiration from the super peri-gee moon that shone brightly over the channel. They saw it as a sign for a suc-cessful race. Malia’s mother, Ann Marie, said she was “just praying for good, safe conditions so they wouldn’t be discour-aged.” The close friendship that was built through the experience was epitomized as they were finishing the final leg of the race. As Kelsi and Malia were passing Diamond Head, Malia, knowing how much it would mean for Savanah to pad-dle across the line, asked for a change giving Savanah the opportunity to finish the race.

Although Malia gave up her chance to paddle in, she now holds the unof-ficial title of the “Youngest Female to cross the Kaiwi Channel” at the age of fourteen (Savanah and Nicole are fifteen, and Kelsi is sixteen). Their time was 6:40:05, first in the 15-17 year-old girls division and the “Youngest All-Female Crew” to cross.Afterwards, Kelsi said, “Seeing Diamond Head was a magical experience and I’ll never look at it quite the same.” Nicole’s mother, Connie, noted, she could see how much “more confidence Nicole has since finishing this chal-lenge.” Savanah was just proud she was able to “overcome her fear of water.” Nicole summed up the entire adventure by saying the race was all about “con-quering adversities with people I love.”Since completing the race, the girls have collectively met with Donna Kahakui about heading up a project for Kai Makana (kaimakana.org) to educate and mobilize the public to better understand and preserve marine life and the ocean environment. Their mission is to have other young people join them in taking an active role in learning about, appreciating and main-taining the beautiful environment we are all allowed to use and enjoy every day.

36th ANNUAL MOLOKAI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS By Guy WildingCovering the distance of 52 kilometres from Kaluakoi resort on the beautiful island of Molokai across the open water of the Kaiwi Channel to Hawaii Kai Towne Center on the island of Oahu……..

THIS IS THE MOLOKAI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS !

In the much anticipated single ocean ski showdown, 49 years old Oscar Chalupsky, a South African kayak Olympian in 1992 and a previous winner of this race a record 11 times, turned the clock back and returned to Hawaii to have another crack at the channel. The winner of the previous two MOLOKAI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, Clint Robinson, 39 years old, an Australian 5 x Olympian and the winner of Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals in the kayak, was returning to defend his MOLOKAI title. Local all round water-man Patrick Dolan, 23 years old, fresh from winning the 2012 OC1 relay in record time and a great 3rd placing in the 2012 OC1 solo – both across the same stretch of water that is called the Kaiwi Channel - looked ready to chal-lenge the big guns. Just to add to the potent mix of tal-ent assembled for the big race, at the 11th hour, 9 time winner of this event and another MOLOKAI legend, Dean Gardiner, 46 years old, from Australia, announced he too was entering. Add the tough South African Matt Bouman, plus Aussies Marty Kenny - here for his 18th crossing – Grant Kenny, also an Olympic bronze medalist in the kayak and also a 4 time winner of this race, plus Bruce Taylor, Kurt Tutt and a host of other legitimate contenders and the scene was set for an awesome battle ! We were not to be disappointed….. From the outset young gun Patrick Dolan raised eyebrows as he turned hard left and set the most southerly of courses. He broke away from the pack immediately and would paddle 95% of the distance on his own. Angles could have been deceiving but it appeared that early on young Pat was actually in the lead ! Clint Robinson led out the rest of the field on a more northerly line, with the double ski of Barton and Szadovski. South African Matt Bouman, and Aussies Marty Kenny, Bruce Taylor, Kurt Tutt and Dean Gardner were all close, as well as the double ski of Patrick Hemmens and Sean Lupton-Smith. Oscar Chalupsky looked like he was in a little trouble early as he was caught up in the escort boat wash, but he remained in visual contact with the leaders – just….. But the pace was on early and the field strung out for miles very, very quickly. Bouman looked strong for the first 2 hours of the race and seemed to be executing a controlled and well planned

assault. Robinson as usual looked very efficient and established the early pace and a slight lead – at least on the bulk of the field that made up the more north-ern group. Gardner was hanging back a little playing a waiting game. But as the group pushed out further into the chan-nel and the surf started to pick up so did Gardiner. Bruce Taylor and Marty Kenny were battling it out with each other wave for wave and staying right in touch with the leaders. Just back a little bit from this group was Kurt Tutt who was also looking strong and determined. Meanwhile Pat Dolan was out of sight as he continued on his more south-erly course. After a couple of hours

Clint Robinson made a move and surfed down a little more to the south of the rum line. He appeared to open up a little more of a lead at that stage, but very soon after Matt Bouman started to work a bit harder and the gritty South African pushed right up on Clint. Bouman appeared to be equal with Clint, but he was still on the straight line to Portlock whilst Clint continued a little more south. However, Pat Dolan was still the furthest south by a long way and we could only just see his escort boat from the group staying on the straight line across the channel. Pat appeared to be dropping back a little ….BUT…. the angles out in the open ocean could be

After a blessing of the crews and a’wa ceremony, led by spiritual leader Kimokeo Kapahulehua, the teams departed Haleiwa by the light of a half- moon that lit the way until 2:30am when the moon set and the stars were the only light until daybreak. Accompanied by an escort boat, two crews of 6 took turns rotating in every hour, making stationary water changes. One crew pad-dled while the other rested, rehydrated and tried to stay warm.Daybreak brought the warmth of the sun, good tide, perfect wind and follow-ing seas. Kendall’s crew arrived safely at Kalapaki in just over 14 hours with the other crews arriving safely shortly after.Although Kendall is gone, his spirit and legacy lives on in the men and women who perpetuate canoe voyaging. Thank you Kendall for your gift.

On April first at 1:15 am, four canoes set out from Haleiwa to paddle the 80 miles to Kalapaki, Kauai, as a tribute to Kendall Struxness who lost his battle with cancer one year ago to the day of the voyage.Kendall was a founding member of the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society (HOCVS) and was no stranger to long paddling voyages. He and a team of paddlers completed the entire 1,500 mile Hawaiian Island chain from the Big Island to Kure atoll. This year his crew members from that voyage decided to honor his memory by paddling Kaʻieʻie Waho Channel. The purpose of the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society is to perpetuate through education and experience the Hawaiian culture of traditional long dis-tance outrigger canoe voyaging through-out all the Hawaiian islands; to uphold the unique and fragile beauty and power of the ocean; to practice an obligation of responsible stewardship and harmony between man and nature; to strengthen cultural and spiritual connections to the Hawaiian islands; and to experience the harmony, strength and respect that arises when men and women of all ages pad-dle a canoe towards a common goal.Kendall’s crew was accompanied by three other teams, from Maui, Kauai and Oahu.

deceiving….. and we would find out if they were a little later in the day …. Not long after Bouman had made a charge up into the front of the race he appeared to pay the price for the extra effort as he faltered a little. We took a closer look at Matt and he was suffering big time – (he later said he started to feel ill with about an hour to go – not sure if it was dehydration or something he had eaten…). Dean Gardner must have a sixth sense in this race and as Matt Bouman faltered just a little Deano made his move. He took full advantage of Bouman’s pain and he pushed very hard, surfing like a man possessed. With about an hour left in the race Dean Gardiner looked to have moved into the outright lead. Looking at Dean’s boat speed at that stage of the race and the fact he was on what appeared to be a more direct line to Coco Head, he was look-ing to be the likely winner and if so would grab his tenth title ! BUT…..little did we know the race was far from over ! Back about a quarter mile we could see a big black ski making a move towards the front. We soon saw the big red headed South African champion, Oscar Chalupsky was on board the big black ski and he had found another gear. So far he had worked just hard enough to stay in touch, but now he was absolutely flying ! He was making up ground very quickly and he moved past Kenny and Taylor like a bullet. Almost as quickly he then caught and passed the suffering Matt Bouman. Dean was still looking strong out in front…… but not far from China Walls Oscar pushed up into yet another gear and challenged the race leader Dean Gardner. BUT…. even though we were right at Koko Head and the two leaders of this race were a previous 12 time winner and a previous 9 time winner this was still more than a two horse race ! Emerging from his more southerly course, the current and two time defending champion Clint Robinson was not going to give up the title without a fight – a BIG fight. He surged towards Koko Head and as the leaders came together it was

clear that Clint was still in the hunt ! Not too far back local hero Pat Dolan also came into view. The young gun was also moving up fast and he actually now looked the strongest of the chase group ! And as they rounded “China Wall” and the head wind hit them all full in the face, 49 year old Oscar Chalupsky was now clearly in the lead. Simply unbelievable ! But it wasn’t over just yet….. Oscar was still followed closely by Dean Gardiner. But then another change. Clint Robinson put the hammer down and quickly overhauled Dean and then set out after Oscar ! Oscar was not far in front of Clint now……Surely the five time Olympian and 1992 Olympic 1000m kayak gold medalist would pass Oscar in the flat water ??? But then Clint seemed to falter a little ……and almost at the same time Oscar miraculously caught a small bump and edged a little further ahead ! (We later found out that Clint had been cramping for much of the second half of the race and he could not grip his paddle during the last surge towards the finish line.) Meanwhile, Dean Gardiner was still pushing hard but he was hurting after his huge effort to try and steal the race. Pat Dolan looked like he sensed Deans pain as he firstly came up alongside Dean and then sprinted past him and set out after Clint. What a race !!! Just before Koko Head Matt Bouman was not a well man and he was passed by both Bruce Taylor and then Marty Kenny who were still battling each other wave for wave, as they had done all the way across the channel ! Bouman was clearly suffering now, but he was still aiming for the finish and pushing himself to (and beyond) his limits. A very, very tough competitor ! Again - what a race !!! Try as he might, Clint could not catch Oscar and once again it would be the BIG ‘O’s day in the Kaiwi Channel ! Oscar continued to paddle hard under the bridge and right up to the finish line at Hawaii Kai Towne Center, as he knew Clint was still chasing hard and would never give up. Big Oscar Chalupsky hung on grimly to win this race for the 12th time in 3hrs 24min 07 seconds ! At 49 years of age : simply AMAZING ! His winning margin was a scant 19 seconds from a gallant Clint Robinson who finished in 3hrs 24 min 26 seconds. Pat Dolan finished third to a well deserved local heroes welcome, just one minute and sixteen seconds back from these champions and the best finish by a Hawaiian pad-dler for many years. What a great year Pat has had and to fin-ish off the season as part of an unbelievable contest between some of the best ever ocean paddlers and some of the rising stars, over one of the toughest stretches of water in the world tops it all off nicely !

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE COMPETITORS IN THE 2012 MOLOKAI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS !
