Inthe1960s,coalhaulageshiftedfromopenhoppercarstohigh-sidedgondolas.Usingagondola,therailroadsareabletohaulalargeramountofcoalpercarsincegondolasdonotincludetheequipmentneededforunloading.However,sincethesecarsdonothavehatchesforunloadingtheproductsshippedinthem,railroadsmustuserotarycardumpers(mechanismsthatholdacaragainstashortsectionoftrackasthecarandtrackareslowlyrotatedupsidedowntoemptythecar)orothermeanstoemptythem.
