At this exhibition, touching the pieces – sculptures and other 3D works – is encouraged, for

enhanced appreciation of their shapes and textures.

■École de Paris and Women: Painters, Models and Icons With “women” as our keyword, we will explore the world of expression at the École de Paris, including works by Marie Laurencin, Hermine David, Jules Pascin, Kisling, André Derain and Tsuguharu Foujita. 2F

Representative works from the collection of the museum, as well as items frequently requested

by the public,will be shown.

■Travelling Hokkaido through Art There are many sites in Hokkaido well known to international tourists, including Otaru, setting

for the Japanese movie “Love Letter,” popular in South Korea, and eastern Hokkaido, where the

Chinese romantic comedy “If You Are the One” was filmed. Here we show and compare

contemporary views and landscapes with the scenes painted by artists.

■Yokoyama Taikan Exhibition: The Adachi Museum of Art Collection

From the collection of the Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, 50 great works by Yokoyama Taikan, a modern master of traditional Japanese painting, selected from the beginning to the end of his career, are shown.

5/25 – 6/23 ■The Emerging Artists in Hokkaido We will introduce works by emerging artists in Hokkaido, demonstrating new artistic possibilities in various areas.

■Masterpieces of the Pola Museum of Art: From Monet to Picasso and Chagall

From the Pola Museum of Art in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, 71 works by 31 artists are presented, including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall.

9/9 – 10/23 ■GODZILLA at the Museum: Vision, Art & Design in Japanese Sci-Fi, 1954-2016 The character Godzilla, created by the movie company Toho in 1954 for the movie of the same name, has had a major effect on culture, beyond the realm of film. A world of monozukuri – skilled production – supporting the movie behind the scenes, is introduced here, including the arts used in special effects, design sketches, set plans, documentary photography, and more.

11/23 – 12/18 ■Utagawa Kunisada 's Ukiyoe Utagawa Kunisada, an ukiyo-e artist from the late Edo period, seized the hearts of people with

his bijin-ga, woodblock prints of stylish, spirited women. Many of his most famous bijin-ga works

are shown.

1/4 – 3/20 ■Kataoka Tamako Exhibition: Paintings and Sketches With her renderings of vivid, bold colors and dynamic compositions, Kataoka Tamako, an artist from Sapporo, Hokkaido, was prominent in the Japanese art world after World War II. The secret behind her 80 years of achievements as a painter will be explored through selected paintings and approximately 350 sketchbooks found in a recent investigation.
