Headlines: 2016 Lugnuts southpaw Ryan Borucki made his Major Leauge debut at Houston on Tuesday, tossing six innings and allowing two runs. Borucki became the second Nut to reach The Show this year, joining Marcus Walden, and the 131st Lugnut all-time to reach the Majors. Ryan Noda is slashing .350/.419/.763 with 27 hits (9 HR) and 27 RBIs in 21 games this month, twice earning the honor of Midwest League Player of the Week, June 4-10 and June 18-24. Noda leads the Midwest League with 62 walks (2nd in MiLB) and a .435 OBP (8th in MiLB). June has featured an unusual schedule for the Nuts: They spent June 1-14 on the road, June 15-27 at home (including the All-Star Break, in which the Lugnuts hosted the 54th annual Midwest League All-Star Game presented by LAFCU), and now head on the road from June 28-July 3. Lansing’s offense leads the Midwest League in runs scored (441), total bases (1091), doubles (156), walks (328), on-base percentage (.354), OPS (.769) and third in SLG (.413). On the pitching side, the Lugnuts have pitched the most innings in the league (693 2/3). Turning Pro: The 22-year-old Laws was drafted by Toronto in the seventh round after his redshirt-sophomore year at UNC Charlotte, signing for $183,300. He was the second pitcher selected by the Blue Jays, following 1st-rounder Nate Pearson, the 28th overall pick.

2018 - Lansing: Laws was officially added to the Lugnuts roster, 4/29, making his 2018 debut and his MWL debut against West Michigan in Game 2 of a doubleheader... he worked briefly in a piggyback tandem with Maximo Castillo, receiving his own slot in the rotation, 5/26... set a new career high with 5 1/3 innings vs. Lake County, 6/6... only three walks in last 151 PAs.

Get Your Popcorn Ready: Interested in drama? Check out these Laws starts: • On May 15th, the Lugnuts brought a 9-3 lead to the 8th inning, only to see the Dayton Dragons score six runs to force extra innings -- but Yeltsin Gudino delivered a walkoff single in the 10th for a 10-9 victory. • On May 26th, the Fort Wayne TinCaps brought a 10-3 lead to the 6th inning and a 10-5 lead to the 9th, but the Lugnuts rallied with five runs (including with four with two outs) to send the game to the 10th. The ‘Caps took an 11-10 lead in the 10th, but Kevin Smith tied the game with an RBI triple and a fielding error by 2B Esteury Ruiz gave the Nuts the walkoff win. • On May 31st, the Lugnuts trailed the Lake County Captains 5-1 going to the bottom of the 9th, but rallied for four runs to tie the score. In the 10th, the Captains scored twice for a 7-5 lead -- but Brock Lundquist launched a two-run HR in the home half to tie the game at 7-7. In the 11th, Norberto Obeso singled home pinch-runner Samad Taylor, and the Lugnuts celebrated a heartstopping 8-7 victory.

2017 - Bluefield: Laws made his pro debut on June 26th, starting vs. Burlington and tossing a scoreless inning. It was one of five scoreless appearances out of six games for the big right-hander at Bluefield, with his only run allowed coming in two innings at Elizabethton on July 21st. He excelled otherwise, firing exactly two innings in his final six outings and totaling 11 strikeouts next to just one walk in 11 combined innings before getting called up to the Northwest League.

2017 - Vancouver: Promoted to Short-Season A on August 3rd, he debuted with a scoreless inning in a start at Hillsboro. There was time left for two more appearances before the season ended: 8/6 at Hillsboro, allowing two runs (one earned) in two innings with three strikeouts, and 9/3 at Tri-City, a scoreless inning. He did not pitch in the postseason as the Canadians won the Northwest League championship.

Runs in the Family: The tallest player on the Lugnuts, Colton Laws’s mother (a recently retired third-grade teacher for 31 years) is 6’0, his father is 6’4 and his brother is 6’4.

No Place Like Home: Faith, North Carolina, is located in Rowan County in the central region of the state, with a population of 807 as of the 2010 census. It is 45 minutes driving distance northeast of Charlotte. No player from Faith has reached the Major Leagues... yet.

Carolina On My Mind: There are six Baseball Hall of Famers from North Carolina - Enos “Country” Slaughter, Rick Ferrell, Jim “Catfish” Hunter, Hoyt Wilhelm, Luke Appling and Gaylord Perry. Notable current MLBers from the Tar Heel State include Kyle and Corey Seager (whom Laws pitched against in high school), Chris Archer and Madison Bumgarner.

High School Days: Laws attended Carson High School, where he pitched and played first base. He ranks 3rd in career strikeouts (147), 3rd in career points in basketball (1,261), earned a 4.1 GPA, and won the Service Above Self Award. He was the first Carson Cougar to be drafted in any professional sport.

College Path: Undrafted out of high school, he was recruited to East Carolina University, but transferred shortly thereafter to UNC Charlotte. There he blossomed under the tutelage of pitching coach Shohn Doty, who had been Justin Verlander’s pitching coach at Old Dominion. In his sophomore season, Laws recorded 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, posted a 7-2 record, and notched a 1.72 ERA, best in Conference USA. He finished the year with a 14-K four-hit shutout in the Conference USA Tournament quarterfinals. In 149 1/3 innings in his two years with the Charlotte 49ers, he struck out 130 batters and walked only 27.
