` Charles Ginsburg led the research team atAmpex Corporation in developing the firstpractical videotape recorder (VTR). In 1951,the first video tape recorder (VTR) capturedlive images from television cameras byconverting the information into electricalimpulses and saving the information ontomagnetic tape. Ampex sold the first VTR for$50,000 in 1956.The first Cassette or VCRwere sold by Sony in 1971.Video RecordingIn the early days, film was the onlymedium available for recording televisionprograms. Thoughts turned to magnetictape, which was already being used forsound, but the greater quantity ofinformation carried by the televisionsignal demanded new studies. During

the 1950s, a number of Americancompanies began investigating theproblem.

` Television CamerasIn the 1920s, American engineer,Philo Taylor Farnsworth devised thetelevision camera, an imagedissector, which converted theimage captured into an electricalsignal.

` Television CamerasThe pick-up tube is the mainelement governing the technicalquality of the picture obtained by thecamera. The first electroniccameras using iconoscope tubeswere characterized by very largelenses, necessary to ensure enough

    light reached the pick-up tube.
