• One of the important presuppositions for the transformation of the local market colony into a medieval city was its advantageous geographic position on an ancient trade route leading from the south.

• The first written citation of Prešov dates back to the 7th of November in 1247.

• Its situation had basically changed after obtaining municipal privileges granted to the Saxons of Prešov by King Andrew III. (1290-1301) on 28th January 1299.

SolivarSolivar

• An important position within the peripheral zones of Prešov in the early Middle Ages was taken by Solivar which most probably existed in the form of a colony as early as before the 11th century. Its inhabitants were mining and manufacturing salt.

Opal mines

• The unique Dubník´s opal mines are located in the middle of northern part of Slánske mountains.

• Červenica is the former administration center of the opal mining, now an bandoned settlement, about 3 km away and from Zlatá Baňa about 5 km away.

Castles

• Zbojnícky castle - ruins of a castle which was built after 1298 and was destroyed in the beginning of 18th century.

• Šarišský castle - ruins of a Gothic castle built in 13th century and rebuilt in 15th and 16th century. Destroyed by fire in 1687.

• Kapušiansky castle - Ruins of a castle built in 13th century. Rebuilt in 15ty century, in 1715 demolished.
