Polish Oil Industry History

The History of Crude Oil

had started from Poland !

We have to move back more than

150 years.

Is the year 1853...


Polish Kingdom is parted in three pieces by Austria, Prussia and Russia.

At the south of Poland, in Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, the crude oil is known and used as lubricant, wood preserving agent and skin disease medicine.


• Ignacy Lukasiewicz, is the one, who had started the World’s Oil Industry History.

• After completion his pharmaceutical studies at the Universities in Krakow and Vienna, he has continued the work in Peter Mikolasch’s „Golden Star” Pharmacy in Lwow.

• Apart from his normal duties, Ignacy Lukasiewicz had engaged himself in the experiments to distillate the Crude Oil and obtain Kerosene.

Polish Oil Industry History • After successful distillation of

Crude Oil, he and his colleague Jan Zech, also pharmacist, had designed the Kerosene Lamp. Adam Bratkowski, the friendly locksmith had constructed it.

• First Kerosene Lamps were ignited to light up the Surgery Room in Lwow Hospital, on July 31st, 1853.

• On that day Ignacy Lukasiewicz, had entered the annals of the Polish and the World Petroleum Industry.


• On Nord American Continent,

Dr. Abraham Gesner –

geologist, was working on same

issue of distillation crude oil to

obtain kerosene. On 27th

March 1855 he had

successfully patented the

„Improvement In Process For

Making Kerosene”

• Ignacy Lukasiewicz never

patented his invention of

crude oil destillation as he

was on the opinion that this

is his gift for Whole Mankind.


• In 1854 Ignacy Lukasiewicz has

established the Oil Company and

commenced work at World's First

Oil Field „Bobrka”, close to

Krosno.

• In 1856 the first Crude Oil

Distillery, designed by him, was

erected in Ulaszowice, near Jaslo.

• In 1860/61 first effective Oil

Company has been established

by three owners: Tytus Trzecieski,

Karol Klobasa i Ignacy

Lukasiewicz.


• In 1860, in Bobrka, was

completed the hand-dug oil

well named „Franek”. The

well is producing some

amounts of crude oil till today.

• In 1861, the first drilled well,

named „Wojciech”, was

made with a manual drilling

rig.

• In 1865 the first Fully

Commercial Crude Oil

Refinery in Chorkowka had

commenced the operation.


• In 1867 - Albert Fauck initiates

the use of steam engines to

drive Oil Rigs.

• In 1870 - Albert Fauck introduces

Cable Drilling Rig in Ropianka.

• In 1883 - „Drill Tools and

Machinery Factory” in Glinik,

close to Gorlice, was opened by

Canadian Driller and Oil-

Industrialist William Henry

MacGarvey.

• In 1884 - MacGarvey had

introduced the Canadian type

Drilling Rig in Ropianka.


In second half of XIX century the names of:

"Polish Baku"

"Eastern European Pennsylvania”

"Austrian El Dorado” , "Galician California"

were given to the Galicia with famous oilfields:

Boryslaw, Mraznica, Horodyszcze, Schodnica,

Daszawa, Drohobycz, Bitków


Intensive production of Crude Oil in Galicia was maintained during

the second half of XIX and first decade of XX century.

Galicia was producing over two million tons per year of Crude Oil,

giving - 5% of World Production.

Galicia was the third-largest petroleum producer in the

world, after the United States and the Russia.


In 1909, Galician Crude Oil Production has reached the peak, the

level of 14,933,000 barrels and it was a third behind the United

States with 183,171,000 barrels and the Russian Empire with

65,970,000 barrels per year.

After 1909, the Oil Production in Galicia had begun to drop, as

the oilfields became more and more mature.

Polish Oil Industry History In 1885 Practical School of Canadian Drilling had been opened.

In 1887 School of Drilling and Oil Production started in Boryslaw.

Polish Engineers and Drillers patented many Drilling and Production Methods. Special fishing tools and equipment had been designed.

Polish Oil Industry History Polish Drillers and Engineers has became famous not in Galicia, only.

They started work at many oilfields all over the World.

Documents and Photographs gives evidence of the their work in:

Russia, Romania, Dutch India, Iraq, Iran, Argentina and Australia.

Polish Oil Industry History After II World War CZPN (Central Directorate of Petroleum Industry) was

established in Kraków.

CZPN had covered All Up and Down Stream Activities of Polish Oil Industry.

The PGNIG is the succesor of CZPN.

The beginnings of Oil and Gas Exploration Company Kraków Ltd. had to be dated back to the 1946, when Company was founded.

OGEC Kraków is experienced Polish Drilling Contractor Company providing domestic and foreign drilling services for over 60 years.

Oil and Gas Exploration Company Kraków Ltd. is a member “In Good Standing” of IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors)

since 1994.

OGEC Kraków has been awarded in 2000 year with ISO 9001 Quality Standard.

In 2009 OGEC Kraków had got recertification of ISO 9001:2008 by Bureau Veritas Certification.


In January 2010 OGEC Kraków had been certified with Safety Standard BS OHSAS 18001:2007

Also in 2009, OGEC Kraków had obtained certification of Envinromental Standard ISO 14001:2004


• OGEC Kraków Training Center are providing Well

Control Trainings to the dedicated oil field personnel in

compliance to Polish Mining Authority Regulations.

Trainings and Refresher Courses as per demands of

Polish Labor Law Authority, Sanitary Inspection and

others.

• OGEC Kraków Training Center is authorized to train,

perform examines and issue International Well Control

Forum (IWCF) Certificates from 1997.

• OGEC Kraków Training Center is also certified to

perform trainings and issue IADC WellCap Certificates.

Observation Program” called “STOP System”.
