What is the purpose of music video?

• A music video is a short film or clip that accompanies a song.

• Where the purpose of a music video in this modern age is for a marketing device to promote and sell the artist in hope to increase the sales of the artists singles and albums. The long-running British TV show Top of the Pops began playing music videos in the late 1970s, where a good video would increase a song's sales as viewers hoped to see it again the following week.

When did they become popular?

• The term ‘music video’ first came into fashionable use in the 1980s.

• In which MTV where one of the first channels to base their channel around music videos in 1981 where they are known to bring music videos to popularity. The first video ever played on MTV was 'Video Killed the Radio Star' by The Buggles.

• Where nowadays the music video has become as important as the song in the success of the song and artist.

Who controlled the development of music videos in the past? Who now has control of the development of a music video?

• Thirty years ago, music video used to be less important than it is nowadays. MTV (Music Television) was the channel that gave so much power and importance to the music video. MTV started broadcasting in 1981 in the USA ,and it distinct the beginning of the music video's controlling the music industry. As MTV was broadcasting 24-hour-a-day music, music videos were needed to be produced.

• The creation of music video has formed a new type of directors: video directors. MTV started even listing directors with video credits and this job has become more and more popular.

track and the artist, the majority of music artists are contracted to a Record label to which they now control the development of a music videos but however mainstream artists themselves also have control and a say in controlling a music video for example the RnB artist Timberland.

• Where within the dubstep genre they tend to be there own producer so they are not contracted to a record label meaning they have full control of there music videos.

• Where now the internet has impacted massively on the relevance and importance of music videos because of the release of the website YouTube in 2005 which has boosted the viewing of music videos and has made it easier to view online videos.

• Where by then artist have began to see the success of there videos as an consequence of there videos mainly been seen via online sites such as YouTube, MySpace and I Tunes . Where the Internet has become the primary growth income market for record companies producing music videos
