    The history of Karnataka can be traced backto a Paleolithic hand-axe cultureevidenced by discoveries of, among other things,hand axes and cleavers in the region.

    Evidence ofNeolithic and megalithic cultureshave also been found in the state.

    The Shathavahanas

    The Shathavahanas (30 B.C to 230 A.D ) ruledover extensive areas in Northern Karnataka.Karnataka fell into the hands of the Pallavas

    of Kanchi.Pallavas domination was ended by indigenousdynasties, the Kadambas of Banavasi and theGangas of Kolar, who divided Karnataka

    between themselves.

    The Kadamba Dynasty, founded byMayurasharma, had its capital at Banavasi in345 A.D.

    This was the first kingdoms to give administrative status toKannada language as evidenced by the Halmidi inscriptionof 450 A.D, attributed to King Kakusthavarma of theKadamba Dynasty.
