Talkies Era The talkies era was set in motion by

the melody of love (1929).The first talkie to be screened in India.

The first Indiam talkie Alam Ara (1931) directed by ardeshir Irani

The studio system

With many new hands now need for the production of films, which was gradually developing in to small industry, the studio system made its appearance in Bombay , calcutta and madras

In 1929 along with four other partners V.G. Damle, K.R. Dhaiber, S. Fatelal, S.B. Kulkarni he formed the Prabhat Film Company in Kolhapur. All were professionals and lacked a strong financial background, but their sound knowledge base and willingness to learn ensured the success of their studio. After which they made films like Gopal Krishna, Khooni Khanjar, Rani Saheba and Udaykal, where all of them were directed by V.Shantaram.

With great dexterity this pushy youngster convinced Germany’s Emelka Studio to co-produce the silent film Light of Asia (’27), with The Great Eastern Film Corporation, Delhi. Starring Himanshu Rai in the role of Gautam Buddha, Light Of Asia was a success in Germany.

Rai now decided to become a producer himself. He collaborated with various filmmakers including the famous German studio, UFA and made Shiraz and A Throw Of Dice.

his third film, Baishey Shravan (the day when Rabindranath Tagore died) was his first film that gave him international exposure.
