• Many more outfits began to feature slimmer and sleeker lines with A-line and shift dresses being amongst the most popular fashions for women and tapered dress shirts being popular with men.

• Music fans took fashion cues from their favourite artists in the same way TV viewers looked for trends in their most loved programs

• a separation between child and adult styles began and the gap was filled by teenage clothing.

• Mens suit became sleeker and often accessorised with bright bold shirts and high heeled boots.

• The fabric revolution ---- Designers experimented with new shiny waterproof materials like PVC and Perspex.

Iconic fashion trends from the 1960’sMini skirt The miniskirt is widely associated with André Courrèges but made popular by Mary quant . Both made it with different styles . It was initially met with some shock and disapproval but was quickly embraced by the youth culture.

Second hand clothingModified, homemade and second hand clothing was an expression of individuality during the 1960s .

Plastic dressesSynthetic fabrics like polyester and acrylic became popular as they were easy to care for and more affordable to produce. Some designers further created dresses made from plastic( vinyl or pvc) that could simply be wiped clean and disposable paper dresses, but these did not take off as much, because of their ability to tear . It became popular during the 1960s due to movies like Baby Doll.

The Rise of Teenage Culture

• some of the biggest trends are targeted towards teenagers . Teenage culture and clothing also became a larger part of television, movies and music.

• many formal fashions were also marketed to this age group as school dances and proms became an important part of the decade and have since been an integral part of teen life.,

• These dresses were definitely meant to be worn while dancing in the decorated high school gym .

Space lookIn 1964, French designer André Courrèges introduced the "space look", with trouser suits, white boots, goggles, and box-shaped dresses whose skirts soared three inches above the knee. These were mainly designed in fluorescent colours and shiny fabrics such as PVC and sequins. Standout menswear –• During the 1960s there were some quite revolutionary changes .• Clothing was much more tailored, body conforming way. • Shirts were cut slimmer and pants were often worn tight around the thighs and then

flared at the bottom ,referred to as bell bottoms, and they continued to be popular during the 1970s.

• Men also wore suiting in bright colors, quite a departure from the standard Black, Grayor beige.

• printed designs such as brocades.Men also began wearing their hair more freely. Some men grew their hair down past their

collar and others embraced Slicked back pompadour hairstyles like on the movie Grease.

colourful elements were introduced, such as the collarless jacket, worn with slim-fitting trousers and boots.During the mid-1960s frills and cravats came back in, together with vividly printed shirts.

Pantyhose Redesigned

Seamless pantyhose were introduced in the 1960s. Before pantyhose, women wore girdles

and suspender belts to keep their nylon stockings from falling down. During the 60s, it was

not proper to show bare legs and it was not fashionable to see the tops of stockings when

wearing mini skirts. Pantyhose were the perfect fashion alternative to stockings.

Additionally, in the late 1960s tights became just as popular. Usually seen in solids, patterns

or with glitter, tights were the perfect complement to a dress or mini skirt.

ModernistsRock bands such as The Who, The Small Faces, and The Kinks emerged from the Mod

subculture. • The Mods were known for the Modern Jazz . • The Mods dress style was often called the City Gent look. Shirts were slim, with a

necessary button down collar accompanied by slim fitted pants. Levi's were the only type of jeans worn by Modernists.

Other popular 60s fashions include:Hot pants took the term shorts to another level. These short shorts were seen in bright colors and made a fashion statement on whoever dared to wear them.Culottes were another popular clothing item. They had the look of a full skirt but were more versatile, like a trouser.Tie-dyed shirts allowed for personal expression and individuality in the wardrobe. Women wearing these brightly colored shirts were sure to be noticed in the crowd.Hippie FashionA subgroup of the 1960 culture were the hippies. This group rebelled against the war, promoted peace, love, and made a huge fashion statement. They opted for fashions that were natural and comfortable. Seen in tie-dyes, free-flowing skirts and beads, the hippies' psychedelic style was as unique as their personalities. They often wore flowers in their hair and painted their face or bodies with peace symbols or other meaningful designs. The late 60s brought a whole new set of trends. Most were modeled after the hippie movement and were casual and relaxed. Women wanted to feel free and show off their individuality.
