Egyptian DenturesFollowed by Egyptians in 300 BC, who used gold and silver wires to hold tooth replacement in place.

Japanese DenturesIn 15th century, Japan invented wooden dentures using softened beeswax to create impression and some tree species to carve dentures from.

Ivory dentures

Ivory carved dentures came out around 17th century. Combinations of animal, human, and ivory were used to fashion these dentures, which were held together by springs and gold wires.

The most prominent wearer of these kinds of dentures was George Washington, who had to cut his 2nd inaugural address to 135 words due to the pain his dentures caused.

Waterloo dentures

When the war broke in 18th century, looters and scavengers took advantage of this time to pull teeth from dead soldiers and sold them to dentists

It happened to be the same time when people’s sugar consumption was high, so tooth replacement treatment was in demand

Vulcanite dentures

Around 18th century was also the time when porcelain teeth became available and eventually, replaced the use of dead human’s teeth for dentures.

The discovery of vulcanite in 1850’s paved way to cheaper and well-fitted dentures that the middle-class can afford.
