Definition of Renaissance

Renaissance – means “rebirth” in French. This was a time period following the middle ages that lasted from the 1300-1500s in the italian city of florence.

Renaissance is a period of revival in classical learning characterized by a sharp increase in secular values and increased interest in learning the classics.

Characteristics of Renaissance Art

- Artists showed religious and nonreligious scenes

    -Art reflected a great interest in nature

    - Figures were lifelike and three-dimensional

      -Bodies looked active and were shown moving

     -Scenes showed real people doing everyday tasks

     -Faces expressed what people were thinking

     -Paintings were often symmetrical

     -Full backgrounds showed perspective

Early renaissance art

Early Renaissance pieces focused on Humanism where everyday people could be subject.

Beginning of perspective. Characteristics -Figures had depth and reality

Early Renaissance Painting and Sculpture in Italy:

Generally painted in frescoes 

Very little depth and pigment

More interested in architecture and space versus objects reflecting the story – less cluttered

Generally painted with oil

Oil on wood – thin layers of oil created a luminescent surface with depth and glowIconography – objects in the piece help to tell its storyMore complex compositions with many objects

High renaissance art

Flourished for about 35 years, from the early 1490s to 1527 focused on self-confident Humanism .With the invention and use of the printing press, there was a greater spread of ideas, and artists could sell prints of their work. Travel also increased during the High Renaissance; therefore, art became more international.

Characteristics:

Halos gone

More naturalism

Definite light source (shadows, three-dimensional)

Sense of stability and order (static compositions)

Commissions from private sources

High renaissance art

Michelangelo prescribed to “Neo-Platonism,” which says God put the sculpture within the rock and that the artist must uncover it, good art comes from divine inspiration and beauty is a path to salvation.

Raphael created works that perfectly expressed the classical spirit—harmonious, beautiful, and serene.

Leonardo, another High Renaissance artist, began to create deep paintings with spatial illusions, which will be more prevalent in the Baroque period.

Painted very realistic pictures such as the Mona Lisa and Last Supper.

Introduction

The Catholic Church held a great deal of power during the middle ages and a result financed most of the art project during this era.

The location of this art movement was in Europe. Artists were paid to decorate churches and create

religious related pieces for the public to enjoy.

Middle AgesMedival art known as the Early Middle Ages also known as “Dark Ages” from the fall of Roman Empire(300 AD)to the rise of the Renaissance (1400AD).

o Medieval architecture was known as “Gothic Architecture” is a style of architecture used in western Europe in the middle ages.o It began in France in the 12th century.

The Medival period had seen a rapid growth in monasticism with several different orders and being prevalent and spreading influence widely.

Medieval Churches

Architecture played a very important role fo the church in Medievel. The more splended the architecture the more the church believed it was praising God. Medievel churches and cthedrals were superbly built.

Romanesque Period The style of architecture that was in vogue was

known as Romanesque because it copied the pattern and proportion of the architecture of the Roman empire.

o The technique of painting on a moist, plaster surface with color from ground up.o Giotto- A famous Italian fresco painter.

Mosaic

o An art technique that creates pictures out of ll pieces of stone or

glass.o It is a technique of  decorative art or  interior decoration.
