Family• He was born 31 October, 1451 in Genoa, Republic

of Genoa.• His father was Domenico Colombo, a middle-class

wool weaver who worked both in Genoa and Savona and who also owned a cheese stand at which young Christopher worked as a helper. Christopher's mother was Susanna Fontanarossa. Bartolomeo, Giovanni Pellegrino, and Giacomo were his brothers.

Spanish Involvement

• Columbus wanted to find a quicker route to Asia and was convinced that if he sailed west he would reach Asia (the “Indies”) faster than traveling around the tip of Africa.

• Columbus went and asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to help fund his trip.

• In 1492, several years after his appeal, he received the money for the trip.

Columbus’ First Voyage

– August 3, 1492 Columbus left Spain to start his first voyage

– He took 3 ships: the Santa Maria, the Nina, the Pinta

– On October 12, 1492 he discovered a land- the island of San Salvador

– This is the date when he discovered the Americas

Spain had a huge reception for Columbus upon his return

– They named him “Admiral of the Seas”

Columbus’ Second Voyage

• October 1493, Columbus left Cadiz with a fleet of 17 ships carrying totally 1,500 colonists.

• He discovered the Leeward Islands, Jamaica and Puerto Rico.

• Columbus returned to Spain in 1496.

Columbus’ Third Voyage

• In 1498, Columbus left for his 3rd expedition.

• In 1500, the King and Queen of Spain sent an independent governor to Hispaniola because of the terrible conditions there under Columbus’ rule.

• Columbus was taken back to Spain in chains.

• He was released later, but his public support was growing wary. BACK

Columbus’ Fourth Voyage

• In 1502, Columbus gathered four more ships to make another voyage in attempt to reestablish his reputation.

• He was hoping that if he sailed far enough west he would find Asian land.

• He struck the coast of Central America.

• After suffering many hardships, he returned to Spain with no other choice, but to give up his dream. Back

Christopher Columbus Films• Christopher Columbus is a 1949 British

film starring Fredric March as Columbus.• Dawn of America, a 1951 Spanish film

with Antònio Vilar as Columbus• The 1985 TV mini-series, Christopher

Columbus, features Gabriel Byrne as Columbus.

• Columbus was portrayed by  Gérard Depardieu in the 1992 film by Ridley Scott, 1492: Conquest of Paradise. Scott presented Columbus as a forward-thinking idealist, as opposed to the view that he was ruthless and responsible for the misfortune of Native Americans.

• Christopher Columbus: The Discovery, is a 1992 biographical film by Alexander Salkind.

COLUMBUS DAY• First celebration of the

discovery of the “New World” was in 1792, in New York.

• In 1937, President Roosevelt proclaimed every October 12th as Columbus day.

In 1971,Congress declared it a federal public holiday on the second Monday in October.
