The Iranian Sistan Basin is located in the northern part of the Sistan and Baluchestan Province, which is situated in southeast Iran. Environmental factors of the Iranian Sistan Basin such as wind, river and lake systems are the most important factors for the emergence, development and collapse of the civilizations in this vast area. Shahr-i-Sokhta, Kuh-i-khaje, Wind mills of Ghale Machi are the most known sites .

Zabol, the main modern city of the Sistan Basin, has also been affected by the same environmental factors. The aim of this paper is two folded, firstly to study ancient architecture of the sistan Basin and secondly to examine formation of the built environment in the modern city of Zabol. The above aims will be assessed in order to have a better understanding of environmental impacts on the architecture of the above area during time .
