What is football ? Football is a sport played between two

teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. At the turn of the 21st century, the game was played by over 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world's most popular sport.

FOOTBALL IN ANCIENT TIMES

The Ancient Greeks and Romans are known to have played many ball games, some of which involved the use of the feet.

Documented evidence of an activity resembling football can be found in the Chinese military manual Zhan Guo Ce compiled between the 3rd century and 1st century BC.

The Māori in New Zealand played a game called Ki-o-rahi consisting of teams of seven players play on a circular field divided into zones, and score points by touching the 'pou' (boundary markers) and hitting a central 'tupu' or target.

The Japanese version of cuju is kemari , and was developed during the Asuka period.This is known to have been played within the Japanese imperial court in Kyoto from about 600 AD.

MODERN FOOTBALL The modern global game of Football was

first codified in 1863 in London. The impetus for this was to unify English public school and university football games. There is evidence for refereed, team football games being played in English schools since at least 1581.

England is home to the oldest football clubs in the world (dating from at least 1857), the world's oldest competition (the FA cup founded in 1871) and the first ever football league (1888). For these reasons England is considered the home of the game of football.

Ronaldo was born on 18 September 1976, in Rio de Janeiro.Like many brazilian children,he began to play soccer in the streets.

Ronaldo’s abilities were first discovered at age 14 when he was recommended to the Brazilian youth team by Jairzinho.

In 1993, Ronaldo began his football career playing for Cruzeiro which was already going on to become a successful club.

Ronaldo chose to join PSV after the 1994 World Cup, for he was selected despite being just 17, but did not play. Ronaldo scored 30 league goals in his first season in the Netherlands.

During his spell at PSV, Ronaldo attract the attention of both Inter Milan and FC Barcelona

It was Barcelona that was willing to pay the then record fee of $17 million. During the 1996–97 season, Ronaldo scored 47 goals in 49 games (in all competitions) for Barcelona.

At the age of 20, Ronaldo became the youngest player to win FIFA World Player of the Year in 1996. He also finished runner-up for the Ballon d'Or.

Ronaldo's time at Barça was brief, as there were problems with the renegotiation of Ronaldo's contract. Ronaldo's unhappiness became evident and at the end of the season, by paying the buy out clause fee in his contract, Inter Milan signed him in the summer of 1997 for a then world record fee of £19 million. He had spent just one year with Barcelona.

Ronaldo adapted to the Italian style of the game in his first season, finishing second on the league's scoring charts. He won FIFA World Player of the Year for the second time in 1997, and collected the Ballon d'Or the same year. The following year, after the FIFA World Cup, he finished second for FIFA player of the year, and third for European Footballer of the Year. At this point in his career, he was clearly and widely regarded as the best player in the world.

İn 2002,having signed for Real Madrid for €46 million, his jersey sales broke all records on the first day, such was the obsession and hype surrounding him.

Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 194 match. With the acquisition of Ruud van

Nistelrooy in 2006, Ronaldo grew more and more out of favour with the manager Fabio Capello due to injuries and weight issues.

On 18 January 2007, it was reported that Ronaldo agreed terms with A.C. Milan for a transfer of €8.05 million.

Ronaldo scored 10 goals in 21 match. On 13 February 2008, Ronaldo suffered a

severe season-ending knee injury while jumping for a cross in AC Milan 1–1 draw with Livorno, and was stretchered off and taken to a hospital.

He was released by AC Milan at the end of the season, as his contract expired and was not renewed.

On 9 December, however, Ronaldo signed a one-year deal with Corinthians.

He scored 35 goals in 64 match. In February 2011, after Corinthians were

eliminated from the 2011 Copa Libertadores by the Colombian team Deportes Tolima, Ronaldo announced his retirement from football.
