tales from a camphorwood chest: a Chinese–australian family story In conjunction with the Chinese Heritage Association of Australia, the HHT will present a talk by renowned Australian designer, TV presenter and author Claudia Chan Shaw, in which she will explore the origins of her family and tell her story of being Chinese-Australian.

Claudia will take us on a journey, from the goldfields of the 1850s to her grandmother’s tiny children’s wear boutique on Crown Street, that traces her rich heritage and its influences on the fashion designs created by her mother, acclaimed designer Vivian Chan Shaw. She will also discuss her own role in building the Vivian Chan Shaw fashion label and taking it to the showrooms of New York.Presented as part of the City of Sydney 2012 Chinese New Year Festival

Contemporary social protest takes many forms, making use of new media technologies and sometimes engaging in risky activities. ‘Culture jamming’ is a form of activism that involves subversively altering media or advertising messages to cast a critical spotlight on the activities of governments, corporations or individuals. It can take place in physical spaces or virtual realms: some activists amend billboards, others hijack websites. Photographer Dean Sewell captured the activities of culture jammers in Sydney between 2003 and 2007.

Working on Robyn Stacey’s House 12

welcomeShare the spirit of the festive season this summer at the HHT and partake in a pudding workshop for a taste of Christmas, or sing aloud at carols by candlelight. Surrender to hot summer nights and enter the Hawaiian paradise of a cool tiki party or book in for a laugh with comedian Tim Ross at Rose Seidler House.

Celebrate Chinese culture and see in the New Year at one of the special events that showcase the history of Sydney’s Chinese community. The summer theme continues at the Museum of Sydney with the radical Surf city exhibition, and you can also see images of contemporary social protest in Culture jammers.

Whatever you’re into, come and see what’s happening at our place …
