A Piece of Lafayette History Itwasinthemid-1850sthatprominentLafayetteresidentsbegantoerectstatelyhomesalongSouthNinthStreet,headingupthehillsouthof downtown.ThegrandresidenceswereastatementongraciouslivingintheVictorianera.Bythemidpartof the20thcentury,thegloryof theneighborhoodwasfadingfast;largehouses,nolongerpracticalanddifficultandexpensivetomaintain,werebeingsubdividedintoduplexesorapartments;houseswerelosttofireand,intheirstead,werebuiltsmaller,moremodernhomes.Theneighborhoodstoodasanagingrelic,apictureof atimegoneby.Thusitwasthat,inthemid-‘80s,agroupof neighborsdecidedtoreclaimtheneighborhoodasitdangledprecariouslyontheprecipiceof deterioration.In1986theHistoricNinthStreetHillNeighborhoodAssociationwasformed,focusingonrevitalizationof thishistoricpieceof Lafayette.

A New Beginning ThestreetcarsnolongerrunfromdowntownLafayette;thetrainsnolongerdissectthecity,theirwhistlescallingastheypassthroughtherailway

corridor.Butthehousesof NinthStreetHillremain,stalwartasever,atestamenttoabygoneerarevitalizedforanewwayof life.Manyof thelargehouseshavebeenreturnedtosingle-familydwellings.Long-timeresidentsliveside-by-sidealongyoungfamilieswithsmallchildren,homeownersandrentersalike,allrevelinginthejoysof lifeinahistoricneighborhood.Forthepast25years,theNinthStreetHillNeighborhoodAssociationhasbeenanactivegroup,chargedwithinvolvingandenergizinghomeownerstoserveasstewardsof thehistorichomesthathave,formorethanacentury,stoodasahallmarkof whatthecityhastooffer.Fromthebungalowsof the1920stoVictorian-eramansionstoramblersof the1950s,theneighborhoodisacollectionof architecture,of history,of people.

Notable Events

A Festooned Fourth IntheweekbeforetheIndependenceDayholiday,NinthStreetHillisashowcaseof pridewithanostalgicdisplayof Americana.ThehousesontheHillarebedeckedinpatrioticbuntinganddisplayacollectionof historicflags,withflagsliningtheparkway.

Children’s Box Parade Children(andadults)areinvitedeachyear,ontheSaturdaybeforeJuly4,tojoininanold-fashionedChildren’sBoxParade.Childrenpull,push,orweartheirboxcreationsastheyparadedownthehilltowarddowntowntocheeringonlookers,withtheeventculminatinginaflagraisingceremonyledbylocaldignitaries.Afterward,thecommunitystaysforanold-fashionedFourthof JulycelebrationonthegroundssurroundingtheArtMuseumandtheMosesFowlerHouse,withmusic,games,crafts,andicecream.

Holiday Luminaria Thehousesof NinthStreetHillareilluminatedinthedaysbeforeChristmasastraditionalluminaria—paperbagswithlitcandles—linethestreetsatdusk.Thecandlestwinkleinthesnowanddarkness,aholidaygifttothepeopleof Lafayette.

Onthecornerof NinthandState,thishousewasobviouslydesignedforthesite—itseemstofacebothstreets!Thehomedisplaysnumerouscharacteristicsof Victorianarchitecture:aporte-cochere,turret,variedroof lines,porchesgalore,artglassandleadedglasswindows,balconies,cupolawithfinialandsawtoothdecorativeshingles.

907 StateAyers Mansion

Thishome,aflagshipof theneighborhoodforitsvisibilityatthetopof thehill,hasrecentlybeenpurchased;youwilllikelyseeworkersintheyardasthecompleterestorationiscurrentlyunderway.Pleasedonotsteponthelawnoruptothehouse,soasnottoimpedetheprocess.

Theneighborhoodgardenwasestablishedin2003onthesiteof theformerrailroadcorridoraftertherailroadtrackswererelocatedalongtheWabashRiver.TheCityof LafayetteprovidedfundsfromCommunityDevelopmentBlockGrantmoneytohelpcreatethegardenwiththeHistoricNinthStreetHillNeighbor-hoodAssociationandBennett’sGreenhouse.Plantings:Fivetypesof grassesgiveheightandmovementandprovidewinterbeauty.LavenderMunsteadandRussianSageprovidecolorandfragrance.Otherplantingsinclude—Lime

ThomasWoodwasthepostmasterof LafayettewhenhespearheadedthefirstairmailflightintheUnitedStates,whichlefttheTippecanoeCountycourthousesquareonAugust17,1859.Atthetime,Woodlivedinthishouse.RoseandStanThomaslivedhereinthelate1980sto1990s.RosecombinedhernameandWood’sandchristenedthenameof hercottage“Rosewood.”Rumorhasit,thatthecottageisoneof Lafayette’searliestremainingstructures,builtin1835.

402 South NinthBall Mansion

Italianate/SecondEmpire,builtfrom1865-1869byJudgeCyrusBallTheBallResidenceisbuiltonwhatwascalled“thepasture”becausesomemembersof theLafayettecommunityownedlandonthehillwheretheirlivestockwasdriventograze.

Themostnotablefeatureof theBallMansionisthefrontmansardtowerwithironbalustrade.Thedoubleentrydoorsandbalconywithironbalustradeaddtoitsgrandness.Noticethepatternedmasonarychimneys.Thebrickdrivewayisoriginal.ThehomewaslistedontheNationalRegisterof HistoricPlacesin1984.

TheHistoricNinthStreetHillconsidersitself luckytohaveoneverymodernresident:TheArtMuseumof GreaterLafayette.HavingtheArtMuseumatthebottomof thehilladdsaconnectiontothearts,avitalpartof anythrivingcommunity.

Themuseum,builtin1960,addedtheWeiladditionin1981;extraspacewasalsocompletedin1988.

RobertW.SamplebuiltthishouseforhisdaughterAnneandherhusband,AshleyJohnson.Samplewasoneof thefirstbusinessownersinLafayette.In1863,heformedandbecamepresidentof FirstNationalBank,aforerunnertotoday’sChaseBankinLafayette.HealsoraisedcattleandworkedtoperfecttheHerefordbreed.

TheBrownswerefirstattractedtotheirhome’seye-catchingturretandgenerousfrontporch.Thebeautifulgardensandthecountryfeelintheheartof townalsodrewthemtoNinthStreetliving.

TheJonandKathyHicksfamilylivedherefor25years.Theyrestoredthehome,keepingtheold,yetmakingitcarefreeanddesignedforeasyliving.Thethree-cargaragewasonceacarriagehouse.Itnowhasheating,centralair,cableandtelephone—everythingtomakecarmaintenanceajoy!

n Thehuge,originalfrontdooropenstothestrikingfoyerwithitsnaturalwoodwork,openstaircaseandstainedglasswindow.

n Therearetwosetsof pocketdoors.Noticetheswingingdoorthatonceledtothebutler’spantry,whichisnowaguestbath.

n Thespaciousdiningroomglowswithitsoriginalwoodwork,beautifulbaywindowandaccesstothebalcony.Themassivediningroomtable,cornercabinetandbuffetwerecustom-madefortheroomandleftbehindbythepreviousownerfortheBrownstoenjoy.

n Thekitchen,withitsaccesstothebalcony,hasagrandviewof the“forestinthecity.”

Inthe1940s,theChmielewski/Liptonhousewasconvertedintoatwo-familydwelling(upstairsanddownstairs).Theyhavebroughtthehousebacktosinglefamilystatusbyremovinganexteriorstaircaseandextradoor,andopeningupthepreviouslyblocked-off backspiralstaircasebetweenthekitchenandtheupstairs.

Ontheexteriorof thehouse,theyhaveexposedandrestoredtheexteriorwoodworkalongthetopof thehouseinthefrontandonthesides,includingthefish-scalesiding.

Listthetopfourfeaturesof yoursite,givingasmuchdetailaspossible.Indicatetheroomsorareaswherethesefeaturesarelocated.(Attachadditionalsheetsasneeded.)

TheMinjarezfamilywasfirstattractedtothelocationof theirhome;onceinside,theyfellinlovewithitsbeautifulstaircaseandoriginallightfixtures.

Severalpastownersof thehomewereLafayettenotables:

n WilliamandGraceMurdock:William’sfatherbuilttheBishop’smansionnearbyonLingleAvenue.

n JohnandAgnesRuger:JohnownedRuger’sBakery,whichwasonceinthe200blockof NorthSixthStreetdowntown.AstreetnamedafterhimisnearColumbianPark.

n ErstonMarshall:Oneof thefirstLafayetteLifeInsurancepresidents.

Thishomehasa“twin-sisterhouse”inHighlandParkneighborhood.

IttooktheMinjarezfamilymorethanthreeyearstorestorethehome.They’vefurnisheditwithmanyfamilyheirlooms.

n Mostof thelightfixturesareoriginaltothetimewhenthehomewasconvertedfromgaslightingtoelectric.

n Thehousehasoriginaloak,heartof pineandmaplehardwoodfloorsthroughout.

n Thefocalpointof thelivingroomisthemarblewood-burningfireplace.

n Thewindowsof thelargemiddlelandingof thestaircaseandthefrontbedroomwindowsboaststrikingdiamondpanes.

LisaandJasonCannonarethenewestownersof thisPrairie-influencedhome.Aformerduplex,ithousedservicemenreturningfromthesecondWorldWarinthe1940s.

Thehousehasbeenreturnedtoasingle-familydwelling,thoughyoucanseehowroomshavebeenrepurposed.Thespacioussecond-floormasterbedroomwasonceamainlivingspacefortheapartmentdwellers.

n Thereisasmallofficeoff themasterbedroomwithabuilt-inwritingtableandrolltopdesk.

n Thesunroomadjacenttothedownstairslivingroomfeaturesoriginalwoodwork.

n Asmallhiddenroominthebasementhasabarandbuilt-inbooth,alldoneinanauticaltheme.

TheCannonshavealreadydonetheirshareof restoration,byaddingadishwasher,newcarpetandlightfixtures,andnaturalslateflooring.Theyknockedoutawall,openingupthefoyer,andhaveworkedonlandscaping.

Futureplansincludeconvertingthetwofrontdoorsintoasingleentry,updatingthebathrooms,andcontinuingimprovementstolandscaping.

ThishomewasbuiltandoccupiedbynotedLafayettefamilytheScheumannsfrom1885-2004.

TheHillswereattractedtothecharmandbeautyof ahistoricneighborhoodnearabusyandthrivingdowntown.

Overthepastsixyears,thecouplehasreplacedtheroof,completedaloftapartmentinthethirdstoryof thehome,andrepaintedtheexterior.Thefireplacewasgivenaslate“facelift.”Landscapingandothercosmeticchangestotheinteriorof homehavekeptthecouplebusy.

n Thelivingroomboaststwobeautifulsetsof pocketdoors,whicharebothstillinworkingorder.

n Besuretonotethemuralinthemasterbedroom.Sarahpaintedittobringsomeinteresttothelargespace,whichoriginallywastworooms.

n Thehouseishometoacollectionof giftspresentedtoBenjaminTracy,Secretaryof theNavy,throughouthiscareeranduponthechristeningof the“U.S.S.Tracy.”

n Thefrontstaircaseoffersabeautifulwindowseat,withcutworkbracketsontheexteriorof thehome.

TheHillsarereworkingthefrontstaircase.Itwaspreviouslyturnedtoaccommodatetwoentrancessothatthehomecouldbeusedasaduplex.Theyplantomimictheoriginalplacementof thestairstoachievetheintendedaestheticof theentryway.

LongtimeNinthStreetHillresidentsPaulandOliviaSchueleronlyrecentlyundertooktheirlatestproject:restorationof their1915AmericanFoursquare.TheFoursquarewasapopularbuildingstyleinthelate19thandearly20thcentury,areactiontothe“excess”of theVictorianperiod.Itembraceddesignelementsof thePrairieandCraftsmanschools,withitsemphasisonhandcrafted,“honest”woodwork.

Withtheexceptionof onewindow,theentireexteriorof theall-brickhomeisoriginal.

Thekitchenfeaturesa1960slook;otherupdatesincludethefullandhalf bathandlightfixtures.

n Thelivingroombookcasesstillhavetheiroriginalleadedglassdoors.

n Thesplitstaircaseisalsoafeatureof theFoursquarestyle.

n Allof theoriginalwoodfloorsareintact.

n Besuretocheckoutthedetailof theeavesbracketaroundthehouse.

DickStout’shomesitswheretheWetherillEstateoncewaslocated.ItwasbuiltbyThisefortheJoycesisters;theoriginalblueprintsarestillwiththehouse.Thehouseisarepresentationof thecolonialrevivalranchstylethatwaspopularintheearly1950s.

Duringremodelingin2005,workersfoundinsidethewalls14whiskeybottlesandtwovintagebeercans—theonesthatlooklikeoilcans—fromLafayetteBrewingCompany.Rumorhasitthatoneof theThisecraftsmenimbibedwhileheworked.

Homen Theoriginal1951woodplankflooringglowsinthe

entryandlivingroom.

n Thekitchenhasbeencompletelyupdated.Onlythefireplace,withitscharmingniches,remainsfromtheearlierdesign.

n Thewonderfultileinthemainfloor“JeanHarlow”bathroomwascraftedbyLafayette’sfamousCassiniBrothers‘TileCompany.

n Thebasementwasdugoutabout20yearsagobyformerownerstheHockemas.

n Thesunroomandtwo-cargaragewereaddedbypreviousownersWillandSallyMiller.

n DuringremodelingbytheMillers,ahiddenroomoff themasterbedroomwasdiscovered.Itwasturnedintoacozysittingroom.

Gardenn Thedeckisof afloatingdesign,restingonconcrete

supports,ratherthanonwoodensupportssunkintotheground.

HomeTheLahrs’home,knownasthe“HoneymoonCottage,”wasbuiltbyHenryW.Marshall,founderof theJournalandCourier,asaweddinggiftforhissonPicandhisnewbride.Thebuilder/designerwasGeorgeE.Holstead,a1906Purduecivilengineeringgraduate,whoalsodesignedandbuilttheMainStreetBridge,nowknownastheMyersPedestrianBridgebetweenLafayetteandWestLafayette.

Thishousewasoneof only233Lafayettebuildingsdesignatedas“Group2”buildingsof excellentarchitecturalsignificanceintheLafayettePreservationNotebook,publishedbytheLafayetteRedevelopmentCommissionin1978.

In1971,theLahrsremodeledthekitchen,whichincludedremovingblackCarraraglasswalltileandsix-footblackcastironsinkwithcustomcurvedmetalbase.

In1978theyaddedthelargefamilyroomandopendeckwithbrickpatio.In1998theyremovedthedeckandaddedthesidesunporch.In2005theyremodeledthesmallbathandstrippedthekitchenflooringtosubflooring,revealingstunningmaplefloors.

n Thedesign,withthemanywindows,givesthehomeanairy,openfeel.Thisisespeciallytrueinthelivingroom,withthelargewidthof thefrontdoorandthewindowsallbeingactualdoors,whichoriginallyopenedoutontothefrontporch.

n Theamountandmassingof woodwork—thebeams,crownmoldings,wainscoting,and“built-in”components—aretypicalof craftsmanBungalows.Strikinginthehomeisthediningroom’slargebuilt-insideboardwithleadedglassdoors.

n Thoughnotoriginaltothehouse,notetheCarraraglassinthebathroomandonthekitchenceiling,

whichwasfromCarrara,Italy.

n Thelargerpiecesof whiteironfurnitureonthesouthwestpatiooncebelongedtotheparentsof neighborsJaneBoswellandMarthaHall.Marthausedtheoutdoorpiecesuntilshethoughttheyweretoorusty,thenshediscardedthem.Sandysawthepiecesinthealleyandbroughtthemhome.TheLahrsusedelbowgreaseandrustinhibitortorestoretheiron.Sandy’sother“trash-dayfinds”canbefoundaboutthegarden.

GardenThelayoutof theexteriorlendsitself welltolandscapedesign.Atthetimeof construction,theemphasiswasonfoundationplantings,encirclingthehome’sfoundationwithshrubsthenflowers.Thiscreatedmassedplantingsof largeevergreenshrubsalongtheKossuthStreetsideanddeciduousshrubsalongtheNinthStreetside.

Thegarageareawasleftbare,withtreesdottingalongthesideandback.Themapletreeattherearof thegarageisbelievedtohavebeeninstalledatthetimeof thehome’sconstruction.Themaplenexttoit,closertoKossuth,wasasaplingthatwasallowedtoremain.

Inthe1950sthestoneswereinstalledonthesoutheastcornerof thepropertywithroomforfloraldisplays.Thepondinthebackpatioareawasreconstructedtoalesserdepthwiththeadditionof smallfountainsandbubblers.

Throughouttheyearsthefamilyhasdevelopedoutdoorrooms,withvariousstonesandconcretelandscapesquares,addinggardendesignsintheseareas.Therearporchandbrickpatiowereaddedinthe1970swhenthefamilyroomwasadded.Muchof thefurnitureof these“rooms”areperiodpiecespickedupbythefamilythroughtheyears.

Anoldhouseisaworkinprogress;theLahrsknowthatanotherprojectisalwayslurkingjustaroundthebend.

In 1988•weappliedfortheprestigiousSERVAASAwardgivenbyTheHistoricLandmarksFoundationof Indiana.Weassembledourentry—amulti-pageboundbooklet—onthefloorof InstantCopy.Billdidn’tmindthathisothercustomershadtojumpoverustogettohiscounter.

In 1996•wepublisheda200-pagerecipe/memorybooktocelebrateour10thbirthday.Tocutcosts,wewereforcedtohand-collate1,000copies,afterhoursatInstantCopy.Billseemedtoenjoywatchinguswalkinahugecircletopickupsheetsandplacethemjustso.
